I guess all the SL webs that contain full search engines will soon also be obsolete. Sorry if this seems a bit premature to some but the history often tells the future.
oh brother.

Well, that doesn't necessarily indicate an investment from Yahoo, however, it's cool that SL has yahoo connections.

Yu is only on the advisory board, so this doesn't imply investment or even a strategic relationship between the companies. It does mean that if Philip wants to talk to the senior folks at Yahoo, he has an ear. But with people like Benchmark, Kapor, and Omyidar involved, it shouldn't be too hard for Philip to get anyone in silicon valley on the phone anyway.

http://www.ogleearth.com/2005/10/bill_gates_is_s.htmlFrom: someone Gates explained his vision of a 3D future as the ability to access distant places from your living room: "You'll be walking around in downtown London and be able to see the shops, the stores, see what the traffic is like. Walk in a shop and navigate the merchandise," he said. "Not in the flat, 2D interface that we have on the web today, but in a virtual reality walkthrough." In fact, according to Gates, Microsoft is already spending "hundreds of millions of dollars" to create a photorealistic 3D map of the whole world in which we can all interact. ... It seems that Google and Microsoft are on to the same thing. They want to make it so your web surfing experience is focused to a geographical location. That way, we can get the benefits of both the web and real life – the web has the ability to take you anywhere instantaneously, and real life is, well… real.
Mapping RL into SL has a lot of compelling features.

Like i said DOWNLOAD google earth..then come back to this thread and tell me its the same kind of program...i have SL, Google Earth and NASA Worldwind and I can tell you SL is not related to the two at all!!! Google Earth and NASA Worldwind took 4 years to make...by gathering pictures taken by satellite all over the globe...such good resolution I zoomed in on the place I live at to the point I could see my car Anyways, as you see thats not SL, SL is a made up world that us as users create...these programs are ACTUAL pictures of places and things around the globe... please do yourself a favor and DOWNLOAD the program before coming back to this thread.

From: blaze Spinnaker Google Earth is a competitor to SecondLife I was actually thinking that the other day, although they're coming at things from different angles. It's gonna be a long time before the two products are near enough to even think about competing with each other. Came across this today: http://www.earthsim.tv/Not quite the same, but from the blurb it sounds like it could be in the future.

Google Earth is nothing like SL. Nothing at all. Not even close. Not even a little bit. Quote all the company talking points you like, and it doesn't make the programs competitors, or similar in any way. My Atlas has maps in it. Does that make it a competitor of SL too?

You do know Google Earth lets people create 3D and streaming content for it? I've got a little ISS and (almost) realtime cloud cover on mine.

blaze, even from within my ignore list, you manage to amaze me with your shortsightedness. Google Earth isn't an SL competitor. It's Mapquest on steroids.
That's not to say that someone [read: Google] couldn't use its mapping data to CREATE a virtual world that could rival SL, but as it stands right now, Google Earth is a fancy way of mapping places. That's it.

I think the question is how fast and how hard Microsoft competes in this area. If they compete hard, Google will accelerate their development schedule.

I don't get it either. Even if Gate succeeded and I could (virtually) walk around say, Fairbanks, AK as I do today in SL sims, it _still_ wouldn't be a competitor to SL.

No, the question is how could ANYONE think that even in the most optimistic scenario that Google Earth would EVER been a competitor to SL?

I like this part, being a longtime fan of a certain someone... From: someone Jaron Lanier artist, musician, Founder, VPL Research Jaron Lanier is probably best known for his work in Virtual Reality. He coined the term ‘Virtual Reality’ and in the early 1980s founded VPL Research, the first company to sell VR products. In the late 1980s he lead the team that developed the first implementations of multi-person virtual worlds using head mounted displays, for both local and wide area networks, as well as the first "avatars", or representations of users within such systems. While at VPL, he co-developed the first implementations of virtual reality applications in surgical simulation, vehicle interior prototyping, virtual sets for television production, and assorted other areas. He led the team that developed the first widely used software platform architecture for immersive virtual reality applications. Sun Microsystems acquired VPL’s seminal portfolio of patents related to Virtual Reality and networked 3D graphics in 1999. Until recently, Lanier served as the Lead Scientist of the National Tele-immersion Initiative, a coalition of research universities studying advanced applications for Internet 2. The Initiative demonstrated the first prototypes of tele-immersion in 2000 after a three year development period. His current tele-immersion-related research interests include real time, remote, terascale processing, autostereo methods, haptics, and software simulation component integration and reusability. Lanier has no academic degrees.
