I am working on Neal Stephenson. I told him about SL via email (I have done some work for him so I have contact with him from time to time) and he said he was aware of online worlds like this but had never tried any.
Just last night I was trying to convey the similarities between SL and his Metaverse and that Snowcrash was a part of the Linden's inspiration for SL (or so I have been told). I invited him to check it out some time. No reply yet - and he is always very busy, and a bit public-shy, so I'm not holding my breath. Does the Black Sun exist already in SL? Where? Chip - maybe you should make a Neal avatar just in case  _____________________

No, blaze, I don't have pull with any Lindens (but the suggestion gave me a warm, FICish glow hehe). Anyway, I don't think it would take pull to get the LL marketing team to take a look at this thread; I think they'd find it interesting. Email a link to Catherine. LL is already working on an event with a celebrity visiting SL -- Cory Doctorow is going to visit (it's his second appearance here, isn't it?), and Hamlet's even promoted bookmaking and Cory avatar contests. There was also a call for a bunch of other celeb avs in the Design area of the forum about a week ago; guess those folks will be inworld soon to "speak" for a conference or something.
Anyhow, I imagine if the Cory Doctorow event goes well and gets the desired results, it'll be followed by others. A list of hoped-for speakers, like the one here, is something the marketing team would probably find useful then. _____________________

There have been two or three Black Sun's, one of which I built, I don't think there are any currently in world, but there is talk of doing another one. interesting thread...some really good suggestions. i can tell you there is some work underway along these lines. stay tuned in the next few months...meanwhile, I would recommend checking out some of the work the SL Future Salon is doing, http://slfuturesalon.blogs.com/ as well as Cory Doctorow's appearance July 24

It surprises me that James Hogan is not on the list, he has written some good virtual reality sci fi books.
A live concert by the Rolling Stones would probably attract an audience. Weird Al Yankovic would fit right in this virtual asylum. Douglas Hofstadter would be an interesting person to hear a view on SL from. _____________________
