This is a blatant repost from a thread that was getting no love. None the less, the 3 people who read that thread all agreed this list is a pretty good resource for SL groups looking to collaborate outside of the grid. Please add your own goodies to the list... So on with my list [some less relevant] Group Collab Software Central Desktop Group Notetaking Jotlive Collaborative Calanders Planzo CalanderHub Upcoming Collaborative Document Generating Writely Collaborative Todo Backpackit Spreadsheets NumSum Wiki Wikispace Voicemail Slawesome Book recommending Reader2 Music recommending Last.fm And of course.... Link Sharing del.icio.us Pic Sharing Flickr I'm sure I missed some, but these are the ones I use on a semi-regular basis.

The collaborative word processor looks pretty interesting, Writely I think it might be fun to try some of these out with SLers, if anyone else does, maybe we could post that we want to try them out, and maybe the identifying information that would let us find each other.

From: Jesrad Seraph Document editing: Hydra The review at that url is interesting. From: The review at that url. However, this process also has some downsides. During Clay Shirky's "A group is it's own worst enemy" talk, there were too many cooks in the kitchen. Just as Clay was talking about how social groups can grow past their optimal size, some people started editing the same paragraph. The paragraph got totally munged because too many people were editing it at the same time. The Hydra crowd was its own worst enemy, ironically. Makes me think about objective reality versus subjective reality and consensual reality. Some events strike people the same way, allowing the simultaneous description process to proceed without trouble. Other events strike people differently cause the attempt to create a merged consensus stream of reality text to fail. Perhaps the program need to be able to branch?

I actually made a post about the potential of these collaborative tools on my blog . I think that when we finally have full firefox integration in SL, these types of tools are going to become a big part of collaborating inworld. People may even begin to bring their outside work into SL as well. Let's see people try and call it a game then!

A lot of talk has gone into describing "what is Second Life"?
One way to look at it as a collaborative 3D modeling program, of a sort that makes it belong in Satchmo's list.
It'd be real nice if we could get some collaboration going with one or more of these or similar programs, and see a few comments.
We have seen a comment or two about wiki style builds going on or proposed in SL, Maxx Monde has a name for them: " biki".

There's also SubEthaEdit for collaborative programming on OS X. It's free for non-commercial use.

As tags emerge into the mainstream it will be easier to keep track of each other.
Tags we should use:

As SL blogging is really starting to emerge, I think it's a good idea for us to form strong blogging networks. I'm putting together my own WordPress setup and should be blogging right around the time of SLCC (next weekend!)
Here's what is required:
Blogrolls - Put links to the blogs of your favorite and least favorite AV's in a visable location
RSS - Make sure whatever blog service you use will send RSS feeds of your entries
Aggregator - It'd be great to have one public aggregator that displays the latest entries from the communities. I could make a public bloglines aggregator, but there must be something better out there.

I think it was one time that Ben Linden explained to me something like, and I paraphrase, "Without socialization in SL, it'd be a pretty crappy 3D building program." One strike against all the nifty gadgets is something I've noticed particularly with blogs: they are set up—by individuals—as novelties, fresh and full of energy, only to fade out shortly afterwards and become either fully or quasi-abandoned. I see a lot of SL blogs that haven't been updated in awhile, some belonging to very busy good friends, so I'm not pressuring anyone to "KEEP ON WRITING!" ~cracks the Havok IV whip~ but this is just how it is. Sustaining in the longterm, that will show itself out. I am a YUGE fan of easy-to-use yet powerful tools that can be introduced with little effort to someone who isn't necessarily into the whole "computer visionary" thing (and all its adjoining bigbigbigwords) but wants to express themselves. Things that help people grow. A fave analogy of mine for blog aggregators is this: OH LOOK! YOU HAVE AN AQUARIUM WITH MANY FISHES! YOU MUST FEED EACH ONE TO SEE HOW IT'S DOING, AND TALK TO THEM TO SEE IF THEY HAVE NEWS FOR YOU! KEEP YOUR FISH HAPPY EACH DAY!! Anyhoo... few things which caught my mind: - As for collaborative 2D painting, I think CrystalShard Foo and Artemis Fate once mentioned something to me, perhaps of Japanese origin. Can't quite remember but there's got to be something out there. Ring a bell for anyone? (Times like these when I wish I could tunnel an IM from outside to inworld.) Some links have been posted in Off-Topic before to Flash sketchboards used by multiple people, but it wasn't designed for saving your work (apart from PrtScn).
- SteveR Feaver has come up with something called BRIX in SL. If you don't know what they are, they're a type of... shall we say familiar building tool. I've encouraged him to develop a collab-geared version for sandboxes and other public spaces. It'd be nice to see more of that in SL, science experiments a bunch of people can stick their hands in and have fun. (Which is, interestingly enough, one of the emphasises made on Stagecoach Island's content like that catapult.)
- I use del.icio.us but find it choreful and the organization abilities are rudimentary. Hard it is to get a balance between form and function. "Compound tags" can't be done yet where you search for sites that have THIS tag and THAT tag and filter all the rest out—it seems to only be sortable on single-tag levels at this time. (Bundles are not the same, bundles are are sorted lists of single tags.) I sent a suggestion email tho.

How would we get a document going in Writely?
That is to say can I get someone to start a shared document in writely?
Or perhaps someone would like to get something going with one of the other collaborative programs listed?
Does anyone already have an SL related collaborate project made using one of the listed programs?

From: Satchmo Prototype I think the first step is to have something to write about. Any ideas? Well we could discuss what to write about once it gets started, in the document itself, right? It wouldn't need to start out as great literature. I picked the Writely app because it looks simple enough to deal with. So I have a document ready for editing. It's called "SL collaborative document" Collaborating in Writely uses email addresses. Mine is suezanne@gmail.com. We could talk about Second Life's need to improve it's collaborative powers. Like to at least be able to send a file to each other, or a piece of email. Something more cheerful might be in order. I am now inviting the people who gave their email addresses in the avatar email adress sharing thread to join the writely collaboration.

Pathfinder Linden mentions: From: Pathfinder Linden "Ning" just launched today: http://www.techcrunch.com/2005/10/04/ning-launches/ "a free online service (or, as we like to call it, a Playground) for building and using social applications. Social apps are web applications that enable anyone to match, transact, and communicate with other people" Yet another web-based development tool that will make in-world HTML even more fun! Thread of Origin. If anyone creates anything SL-related on Ning, please let me know. I'll index it on the http://del.icio.us/secondlife site to spread the word to as many Residents as possible.

Collaboration inside SL?
10-18-2005 14:58
Are there any user created tools for dynamic collaboration within SL?
I think it should be possible.
We can already build together in groups. I've heard of a spraypaint can. There must be a way for a scripted object to coordinate document (note) workflow, including approvals or rejections via dialog box.
What's going on inside SL to improve collaboration?
