"Ning" just launched today: http://www.techcrunch.com/2005/10/04/ning-launches/"a free online service (or, as we like to call it, a Playground) for building and using social applications. Social apps are web applications that enable anyone to match, transact, and communicate with other people" Yet another web-based development tool that will make in-world HTML even more fun! If anyone creates anything SL-related on Ning, please let me know. I'll index it on the http://del.icio.us/secondlife site to spread the word to as many Residents as possible.

Hmm. Possibly interesting, but I think I'm a bit over my head here. Is this like a WYSIWYG community building editor? Explain it to me like i'm stupid. LF

From: Ning.com For any Mammal -> Your own take on Hot or Not LOL, just thought that was funny. The site itself sounds like interesting stuff. -Ghoti

There's an excellent FAQ about it here: http://faq.ning.com/group.php?FAQGroup:title=General+Questions+About+NingLooks like a web-based platform where both seroius coders and non-coders can build applications using some basic toolsets as well as using other people's code. I signed up for the beta developer program (anyone can) but they haven't accepted my application yet, so I can't give a firsthand-report on how easy these tools are to use. Torley, ya I saw that thread by Satchmo...very cool stuff!

Woot. I saw this early this morning. Can't wait to get my dev account so I can begin. I wonder what Snapzilla has to do to work with Ning and other mashups. Snapzilla should be the cornerstone of any good SL mashup, or else we'll all have to move over to something like Flickr (which is great for hi-rez photos btw) The new tagging function in Snapzilla is awesome... I want to mix those tags up with other apps to create my SL mashup.

I just got developer status on ning.com. Made something. http://residentfinder.ning.com/That's just a tiny example of how you could use ning.com to build the beginnings of something like a cool "SL Meetups in RL" application. I invite any interested Residents to please join the developer community on ning.com and CLONE THIS APP and run with it. I set it up as a proof of concept with the hope that it might give Residents cool ideas to take it further. If you clone it, please notify me via email ASAP (pathfinder@lindenlab.com). I will keep the app up only as long as it takes for other people to clone it (I don't want to keep it running as a permanent resource...this is something Residents should be managing!). You'll need to get a Google API code to make it work, and I'll be happy to walk you through how to get that and where to include it in the code. All active apps on ning.com are open source and clonable by everyone, so whatever Residents create on ning.com will then be able to be expanded on by everyone. You can use ning.com to experiment with things and even take all the code to install on your own private system if you want to make it closed-source for business reasons. How cool is that? -Pathfinder

NOTE: Remember, everyone on ning.com can see whatever specific address you enter in that application (that's the whole point of it, to facilitate meetups).
So...well...don't enter your home address unless you want everyone to know where you live!

Well, I snagged a developer account, but, because i'm PHP illiterate, it's mostly useless to me. I tried doing a SL dating site, but I apparently broke the syntax by changing a line, and now I can't fix it. Ergo, the entire site is hosed. It'd be ncie if it were friendlier to non-dev noobs like myself, but it's understandable that it isn't. Not everyhting can be WYSIWYG. LF

Can you clone my app, call it whatever you like, and just keep it running so other people can check it out and also clone it?

So hopefully you're not too far back in the queue. Hmm...something crashed the app earlier. I reset things so it's working again now.
