From: Magnum Serpentine 18 people
We use to have a gate but its gone now, only scripted object on the event site. That's a /LOT/ of people for a sim. Really bad performance usually results from numbers over 15... Also, look at your sim now, does it still have the same lag, with it's current ammount of people, if it still has 18, then consider a time since preview's been up (about 3 weeks now) when it's had less than say... 5 people in it... and tell me if it had lag then.

From: Enabran Templar You know what else is gigantic? Whales. Maybe whales are causing your lag. Ever thought about that? Whales are *enormous*. Even more enormous than this dratted "preview world" you speak of.
So, you know, I'm going to blame whales on this one. Yeah. Whales are also pretty slow. However, we should still be saving them, even if they do cause lag due to their slowness.

From: Lo Jacobs Yeah. Whales are also pretty slow.
However, we should still be saving them, even if they do cause lag due to their slowness. No, that's not fair to Magnum. If we can establish with reasonable certainty that earth's cetacean population is responsible for lag, it will be incumbent upon us to exterminate this scourge immediately.

Magnium, you concluded that because your lag arrived at the exact same time the preview grid arrived, that the preview grid must have caused the lag. By that logic isn't is also possible that YOUR LAG caused the preview grid? That is to say your lag may have actually brought the preview grid into existence.
Hrmmm, no wait, that doesn't make any sense at all. Maybe we should be looking for HOW one thing caused the other rather than assuming that one event caused another event simply because they happened at the same time.

Well, for the sake of discussing exactly how much effect preview grid has on the main one, there are 3 major grids, one used for current version testing, one used for next version testing, and one we occupy, the next version grid is either Dev, which is the testing for early phases of software development, and either Colo or Siva grid, Siva is this rotation's preview grid, and Colo is the 1.6 preview grid, will be used for 1.8 once we hit 1.7.
These grids... are always running, therefore the start of preview really wasn't a change for SL.
Now, how was performance with like 3 to 8 people... if that's worse... then we'll start looking for why it's problematic, but... just accusing a non-event, isn't gonna do anything but destract from the real problem.

This is an intriguing idea. Perhaps we should consider it further. Do you have a newsletter or mailing list to which interested parties may subscribe?

Well lets spin this down
A) Magnum has been shown some very technical and compelling reasons as to why the Preview Grid cannot affect the Main Grid's performance, and has refused to even acknowledge this>
B) Magnum has chosen to blame the first thing he sees, the Preview Grid, for the lag, without once even investigating what in the sim could be causing lag. Also, refusal to note the fact that when sims crash, if they return, they arent always run off the same server. Maybe the sim crashed, and when it came up, it was on a laggy server.
C) And the number one thing in my opinion, Magnum has refused to acknowledge his selfish request, asking that everybody in SL relinquish work on finding the bugs in 1.7 Preview, as well as LindenLabs for spending time AND money putting this up for us, just so he can hold his little event with a little less latency.

While it may seem logical to conclude that the new preview grid has been causing your lag problems, have you contacted technical support for any assistance? It is presumptuous just to assume that is what is causing it without at least making some effort to try to resolve it. I had lag before the preview grid came up, and I am on a dual processor Pentium-D with a Geforce 7800 - it doesn't really matter what you are using, lag happens. I am sorry it affected your event - I was at an event with so much lag I could not even see people's avatars, only their attachments. It is frustrating, but it is one of the things 1.7 and beyond are supposed to help with. Even if the preview grid were causing stress on the main grid in the short term (which makes no sense from a technical or logical standpoint), it would be worth it if it helped to expedite the release.

All right, I have an update.
I'm pretty sure Magnum's lag had nothing to do with whales. I am concerned with another issue, though:
Australia.
Have you seen that thing? It's a pretty big chunk of land. I'm thinking Australia, by merit of its enormous size, is causing Magnum's lag. I move that we scuttle that continent to alleviate this issue.

I farted.

From: Magnum Serpentine I request that this post be locked and deleated. It appears that one or two are having fun at my personal expense. Let me get this straight... You start off by complaining that a 30+ computer grid on a separate base is lagging a 1000+ computer network, and request that it is to be shut down immidiatly due to it causing lag to you and your immidiate sim region personaly. Next, you wave off the long, educated, and pretty accurate technical explanations that proove that your claim not only is beyond false - but is also practicly a joke with a quick "No its not true" - and end with a rather curiously smug "Next?" Several people did make fun of you - you're a pretty easy target you know. But you've been pretty hostile to those who have also tried to honestly help you and show that no, the lag did not came from that direction, and tried to asses where it was actually coming from. In my opinion, this thread should be locked simply because you've posted here to rant and bash people or LindenLab, without actually being willing to listen to anyway. This is starting to sound more and more like a User Error rather then a Tech Error. From: someone I do not like being made fun of. Then I guess that you'll just have to stop doing such a fine job of making fun of yourself on your own.

I do not like being made fun of. In my country we call the attitude you displayed in this whole thread as "handing out the perch". I thought I'd share this

lord, I thought Magnum's post HAD to have been a joke. And Ice has been taking so much time (exceedingly generous) to try to explain this, just in case he was serious. You might as well try to listen, instead of insisting that the world is flat because you can't feel the curve. all I know is that Enab is having WAY too much fun with this one rofl

I think I've been to one of these events...
correct a girl if she is wrong... but, Master, she has noticed that your slaves deighn to remove their prim hair durring this event (as recommended by event hosts). May a girl suggest leaving the slaves in the kennels while the Masters play with their SCRIPTED swords.

I have a different suggestion as to why the lag is happening. I believe it to be the work of KGB spies that are deliberately creating lag on Magnums computer and concurrently making it seem like its coming from the 1.7 preview. They believe this will lead to Magnum creating a push for the downfall of upcoming preview versions. Once this downfall occurs, the Russians will be able to jump ahead of LindenLabs in developement of the thier own online community translated to "only life".

Hmmm.....
The preview grid is lagging the main sim... Canadian players play in the preview grid... Mike Myers is from Canada.... Who stared in a movie with Heather Graham... Who's name is a part of Alexander Graham Bell... Who made the first phones in 1875... The same phone that's used in the presidential office....
Oh. My. God.
This goes all the way back to the white house! The President is out to stop Second Life! TO ARMS!!
