I was lucky there as it turned out that a friend... who I didn't realise was already here TPed me into a nice place and showed me around. Then I began walking around, and making all the typical newbie mistakes [boxes on heads anyone?]. Then a friend got a sim and I've been pretty busy, although I had considered being a helper. If friends join then I tell them to send me an IM and then I get them all set up so that at least they're fairly comfy. My own tip to newbies is to go to a sandbox... usually the furry ones are best because sometimes there's something really funny there to see. Then just say "Hi" to someone and say you're new and trying to settle in, be nice. If they're nice, great... if they're nasty then don't fight, it's a waste of time. Turn SL off and go and do something... watch telly, walk the dog, have a cup of tea, then turn it back on and try to converse with someone else, you'll crack it eventually. Maybe someone ought to write a song... First day blues Wolfie!

Perfect thread especially since today is my one year rezzday I flew around a bit, sat on the roofs of the old WA buildings. when i finally decended my newbie stench gave me away and some nice people gave me free stuff a whole folder of wings and some glasses. I put on the glasses and they were way too big and off center, so a lovely lovely lady took me to a sandbox and taught me how to re position them. i pos rated her with all the money i had XD and then promptly wore a box on my head. then i headed back to the WA (as i also saw it as my newbie home) where torley (when she was torgerson) was chatting with people and then psyra decended wearing one of his giant sparrow avvies. I was hooked.

My first day I learned how to do search and found the old Aqua Mall. Wow! I was amazed at the amount of stuff they had! I bought a few things with the few L$ I had. One of them was a blue plaid skirt that after I bought it I couldnt find it in my inventory. So there I was freaking out in the mall cause I couldnt find what I spent my money on and I wanted to try it on. Well this lady saw I was lost and she helped me find it in my inventory. Then she explained alot of things to me and basically took me under her wing. She is still one of my best friends today in SL.

My First Day
08-31-2006 06:08
My first day was horrible. My wife, Mrs. Showdog Tiger dragged me out of my office at our home to the kennel computer and forced me under threat of divorce to sign up for a premium account. She was completely beside herself. She was stuck in her First Land in Tenjin with a bad neighbor and had found a nice piece of First Land in an older sim, Green. No Help Island for me! She actually pushed me off the chair to go straight to the site to buy it. She promptly borrowed a tea house from Tateru Nino and designed one for the site. We now have a great house in Green. She is a creature of habit...much of the house here looks like our Real Life home. I still have my first avatar skin but do have better hair and eyes now. I usually am wearing my Huphrey Bogart Cassablanca white dinner jacket. After Labor Day it will change to the black dinner jacket. I have a blast wandering around looking at all the things that would never stand in the Real world. Midtown Bienenstich does a pretty good job. Kamon Fate has some great landscaping stuff. I do some paperwork for the In-world charity Show helps with and that's about it. I've met some really interesting people here. Lord Sulivan, Lars Bismark, Travis Lambert, and Guy Linden.

Day one: -Spent an hour on Orientation Island (really -never- thought I'd get flying down), gave myself lovely purple slider hair and clothing, left, was transported to a truly lackluster starting point (Huyles, I think, is the name?) and just started running around and exploring. I didn't know how to utilize search yet, so I mostly looked for green dots on the minimap. -Rudely threw myself onto a parcel of land at which the owners were at work building a nightclub. They were incredibly kind to me, however, invited me into their group, gave me a pair of wings, and a folder full of newbie-oriented landmarks (setting history in motion, see day two!). Received my first friends list entry! Later on, they invited me to join them at The Edge, which I didn't know anything about. I took them up on the invite, but realized within the first minute or so that this sort of place just wasn't my speed...walked around looking at all the slot machines while everyone danced and didn't say more than a couple words before eventually logging. Was still grateful for the friendly invite, though. Day two: -I started going through the folder of newbie landmarks I'd been given. Hit the Gnubie Store, wanted to buy pretty things, so I made my first purchase of $300L or so. Having seen only this store so far, where everything costs $1, I assume I'm filthy rich! I bought my first lovely purple prim hair set, some clothes, and then off I went to hit the next landmarks. -Hit NCI, Ivory Tower, Yadni's, a couple sandboxes, headed back to my sad little home point to spend some time being frightened by "Coney Island of the mind", then... -Clicked on the last landmark in my newbie folder; "The Shelter". Haven't looked back since.

My First Day
08-31-2006 06:19
I'm still pretty new. My first day I never set foot on the mainland. I looked at everything there was to offer before I left the Island.
The next day, I met a very nice guy who took me to Kala Bijoux's store. He bought me some great wings. I met Kala Bijoux and she designed the most incredable dragon tail for me.
I love Mrs. Showdog Tiger for telling me about this place and letting me play here some when I'm at work.
I like the classes at Teazers. And I adore Ziggy Hicks...he helped me save up for my first pretty flexi dress.

My first day... I don't remember it too well. All I remember was the Welcome area at that time, the one with the boardwalk, bit of seating and a lot of people. I remember wearing quite a few boxes, as the help island I was on didn't explain HOW to unpack things! I had to come to the forums to learn that! I remember my first few attempts to build and texture. Ouch, those were painful.
All in all, I think what kept me around was the fact that I could make what I wanted and meet some interesting people while doing it.

Reflection

I'd already seen Second Life as my sister is here. I played around for a bit on Help Island and then went over to a party at The Shelter. One of the guys who runs the place found me my skin...a nice snow leopard. It took me for ever to find my hair and the right ears. My tail is still a work in progress.
I dropped back to being a basic player because I could do everything I wanted to do without spending the money. I won a premium membership from an In-world charity, but donated that back for their advertising budget...they did not have one.
I've met some wonderful people here. I like the concerts with live music the best. I also get a kick out of the virtual newspapers.
Best of all I love being a cat!

my first day hmm *cues the dream sequence*
I played around on help island for a little bit (by little bit, I mean until my GPU fried and I had to replace it)
Then once I got that fixed, I went and met up with some friends I knew from Counterstrike. We just started crashing parties.
I drove my first boat that day, and well now I collect them. and sometimes make my own.
*ends the dream sequence*

From: Lillani Lowell A thread for people to reflect on the "Then" and "Now" of their own Second Life.
What did you do with the first days/weeks of your Second Life?
How does your Second Life now measure compared to then? Then: Introduced to SL by a colleague who thought it would give me something to do whilst off work (housebound) due to an accident. Got through Orientation Island only to be utterly confused by the lack of obvious objective at the Welcome Area. People started giving me clothes, showing me how to use animations (dancing, etc.), around venues, their houses, etc. Before the day was out, I'd gone premium, skipped the free trial, and acquired my first land. (And expensive skin, clothes, prim hair and prim shoes, actually..which in hindsight seems quite a lot for first day.) I was completely bowled over by the experience. Now: I sometimes consider putting a price on the aforementioned colleague's head ( ) because it's now SL keeping me housebound when not at work. I've only been here three/four months and my social life and RL relationships are suffering due to my addictive relationship with the medium, and I'm now *actively* scaling back on my involvement here. I sold my last piece of land just four days ago, withdrew over 130USD worth of Lindens because I know they won't be spent, but because I subscribed anually, I'll still pop in a few hours a week and have all the cash I need.** I'm still blown away by the creative possibilities offered by Second Life, but continue to be disappointed by the fickle nature of many relationships within. Not that I haven't made some great friends...but I've never made so many -- what seemed like strong -- friendships, with people who clearly saw me as more of a character to play around with in a game, before moving on to the next level. (Not bitter words; just an observation.) ** Incidentally, a good friend (subscribed same week) also sold up last week (several waterfront parcels) and withdrew all his Lindens -- intending to reduce his presence considerably -- so I wonder how common this is.

My first day consisted of the Orientation Island then Ahere, but as i had been here before i went exploring and talking to everyone that would listen to me so i could learn all i could as i was intending to stay this time. Ive met some great people here and im not gonna name ya all in case i get banned but u all know who you are I have also met some real idiots to but they have been few and far between I didnt come here to make money just to try and enjoy my time here and give something back to what im sure will become a great enviroment once its grown up a bit more, to me, SL is still like a stroppy teenager but adulthood is round the corner but for all its problems i think LLs do a great task in delivering an excellent game/platform and i am glad to be a part of it Ive met and talked to some very interesting people, i love the diversity that i get here and have learnt so much from others, we live in a great time lets hope that we use this time wisely and lets try and live life here with a bit more "DTC": Discipline, Thourght & Control Thanks for the forums they have been great to learn from and entertaing to watch, i wont say i will miss them as there are lots more forums springing up and im gonna be visiting and posting in as many as i can and i will read the blog so i can keep up with LLs official comments I hope that i continue to make new friends and learn new things and i look forward to my future in SL.

I came to SL to be with a special friend who was already an active resident. I knew what sim she lived in, and that she was a furry. So I knew I was going to be a furry in SL, too. A red fox is what I wanted to be. Before I logged in, I read all the website info, so I had a pretty good idea how things worked.
I did everything I could on Orientation Island, gave myself a marginally passable Human female appearance, and then hopped directly to the mainland. (No Help Island back then.) I went straight to the sim that my friend lived in. Asked the first person I met for help in getting a Furry avatar, and asked if they knew my friend. I think that was Yiffy Yaffle, and she showed me to the store, and to where I could get a free red fox avvie. She knew my friend, and told me she wasn't on-line yet.
Within 30 minutes, I was a vixen, I had a pile of freebie stuff, and had a shopping list for a high-quality avatar. I bought a pile of Lindens via PayPal, and hopped to Bruin, where I bought a high end fox avatar from Jakkal's Werehouse. By the end of the day I was a happy vixen in The Forest, and had met several nice new friends. No less than four people had given me free clothes, free jewelry, and folders stuffed with newbie orientation info.
By the time I managed to meet my special friend in-world, two days later, I had a reasonably nice appearance, and was ready to play!

From: Cory Edo I still run from people a lot when they talk to me. Occasionally, I do the Linden Leap instead of speaking (not so much since they fixed how focus works). First day of my first time in SL....make a character, log in, realize with the initial clothes making / appearance setup all I can do is t-shirt and pants. Tried to find a store with affordable suit (was trying to make my character from someplace else), more than my newb money. Had no idea where to go for help as a newbie. Gave up and logged out about an hour or two later. Not quite a year later, friend talked me into trying it again. First day, take 2 - This time, found the linden freebies at the now infohubs and got a tux. Friend took me to Yadni's where I loaded up on freebies and learned to make drag-n-drop inventory outfits. Then I got ported over to The Forest where I got my first Lion AV. Oh yeah, and I wore a box on my head...several times.

Didn't get very far
08-31-2006 08:36
I started by spending a couple of hours on Orientation Island, getting my avatar shape set (I still use it with only minor adjustments) and making some clothing. Then I arrived at Waterhead (not the main WA -- there were lots of people coming in, so some got sent to other areas), and spent a lot of time talking to a couple of Mentors who gave me a bunch of free stuff, which I happily spent the rest of my first day looking through. I don't think I even got as far as Yadni's until day two, and I met my best friend in SL on day three when she arrived at Waterhead.

My First Shopping Trip
08-31-2006 10:03
My second day in SL (Sunday), my friend (also less than a week old) and I went on my first shopping experience in SL. We both managed to teleport in the hub 2 sims over from the old Midnight City in Umber. When we arrived in the city, I bought 2000L and split it with her and we hit the stores . She found the local anmation shop in MC so we both we're having fun animating our new avies with the various demos animations. My friend wandered off to a separate room in the store and found a sexual anmation. I found her on her knees with her head bobbing fore and back like a chicken. Just as I let out a "ROFLMAO" a guy walked in the back room. Than my friend said, "how do you stop this thing?" Yes, she was stuck in a fairly compromising position. I thought, "OMG, what should I do?". About that time, the guy having fun decided he was going to try to get in a more advantageous position and begain to move toward her. So there I was, second day in SL, my best friend stuck on her knees, head bobbing away, with this guy about to take advantage of the unique situation. I put my avie between him and my friend, he moved again, I did the same. I was absolutely frantic trying to save my friends virtue. Looking back on it, it is soo funny. I never really knew if the guy was really going to try anything, and if he was, so what, it would have been pretty funny anyway. One thing for sure, it was an unforgetable experience and to date, one of the funniest episodes I've had in SL

I entered the world first time at the Ahern welcome area. Strange people used to hang out there, for example there was a bum who looked like he was selling ballons and flamingos. It was a bit unsettling. I spent my first day drifting in the direction Dore and Miramare. I wondered what people did for a living, and how long before my avatar would start being reminded about her empty stomach. Maybe they would have free food distribution for noobs in this game? Like in ancient Rome. I marvelled at this wonderful and endless expanse all around me. It felt so big, exciting and mysterious. In Miramare or Sistiana I was caught up by a tram. A tram, could you believe it! The driver (or so I thought) instructed me to get onboard immediately. I replied to the automated script that I hurried the best I could. I got on and rode along to Luna, end station. Now there was something I could do. I could drive trams or trains, get a pay check and spend my cash on all the lovely merchandise and jewellry I saw around me, and I wouldn't need to starve. People using TP ? The thought of such gamebreaking silliness never even entered my head. Needless to say, Second Life had nothing of the organic depth I imagined. But before I realized the world was really just a set of wing flats in a virtual chatroom, it was the love of the season.

My first day was... a year ago, today! (Happy rezz day to me.)
*choosing my name... what was I thinking? I tried to explain it to a friend who I knew from a different game: I think I chose the last name, because my rl last name begins with an "O" and as for the first, I said I wanted something bubbly... but, sheesh -- it has nothing to do with my real name, anything about me, any thing I'm interested in, any other user name I've ever created... But darned, if I'm not now vivi, or just v.
*I spent time making my avi -- I meticulously made her look like me in rl. Imagine my embarrassment when the first group of people I stumbled upon were Malibu Barbie Blonds! I scurried into a corner and did a good deal of nipping and tucking, tho managed to not conform totally -- and that was the last major redesign I made.
*I eventually ended up at the Edge, where I met two people who are to this day my dearest friends (one is my partner). Kind people there gave me clothes and -- when I said in open chat I'd be happy to participate in a topless event as long as nobody minded me not having nipples, a free skin came my way.
So many memories: winning the infamous "sex chair"; buying my first hair; making my first outfit; learning to make my feet size "0" so my shoes would fit; running the circuit of money trees -- being thrilled to find an apple or banana!; building a house on the side of a cliff while knowing nothing about terraforming or property lines -- we had to rebuild every day due to autoreturn on our neighbors land; not knowing about camera-controls so I was constantly spinning myself around to see things...
It's been a most wonderful, delightful, amazing year.

Happy rezz day, viv! Pardon for asking, but was not using capital letters also a feature of wanting to have a "bubbly" name? I often ask myself why people use small letters for their names. I don't get this why people started making modifications to their avatars already on "Orientation Island". Before I could get some decent clothes, trying to seriously create an original appearence was the last thing I thought about. The first set of attire given to me, by the way, was some white and chicken yellow beachwear, featuring monarch butterflies. I looked horrendous, but I used it, and was happy with it. Didn't have a nickle anyway.

First day? Hm, about a year ago. Spent quite some time on the island, trying to learn as much as possible, before heading into the rest of the world. Still was a completely confusing experience. Flying and teleporting around, visiting malls, following a railroad track, fetching some free stuff, passing by Ivory tower... Second day... don't remember, but about the same as the first day. Third day in SL, that was earlier this week. Had forgotten about everything that I previously had figured out. Even more confused than my first time. Since then, I have found the new location of the Ivory Tower, reset my "Home" to a more suitable spot, as the one I previously had (don't know hat it was) where now somebodys private land with no access... Soon, I am even ready to figure out how to do a simple emote/pose/whatchawanacallit or even replace my white t-shirt or blue jeans /Magnus The one year old newbie
