First Day
08-30-2006 12:44
Dearly Darling,
My first day here I ran into a fox on Help Island who told me it was a waste of time there and to follow him to the Mainland. Boy was that ever a mistake. He took me to an adult club and left me there. I clicked the help button because I had no clue as to what to do. This lovely woman by the name of Tateru Nino came to my rescue and took me over to The Shelter where I met Lars Bismark (now my SL nephew) and Travis Lambert. They helped me get situated..including helping me find first land. Shelaura Toomba helped me make myself...from my purple hair to my purple glasses and even my beautymark. Since that time I've made some lovely friends and business associates. Baccara Rhodes, Lord Sullivan, Midtown Bienenstich, and Micheru Mathys to name a few. I have a lovely home in Green thanks to Jon Rollands. I work for an In-world charity. I design artwork and gardens when the mood strikes. I have never been turned away from anyone when I've asked for help. Clubside Granville just the other day helped me understand how to make a PDF file. The professors at Teazer's, the "Glorious Live Help Office"---JayJay, Amber, Ethan: who has fixed things for me more times than you can imagine, Data, Melissa, Doug...The list goes on. I came here hoping that Second Life would help keep me in touch with younger people. Maneo and I could not have any RL children so sometimes you just feel lost as to where the world is headed. I've realized that I can be much more tolerant of people who are different from me. I'd never met Gay, Lesbian, Furry, Gor, or SMBD people before. Almost everyone I've met has been kind, smart, and tolerant of "little old lady" never-ending questions. I can truely say: Once upon a time a purple haired little old lady showed up in Second Life and lived happily ever after. Mrs. Showdog Tiger _____________________

After Orientation Island, I got thoroughly lost in the Welcome Area (no Help Island back then!) until the person who invited me into SL teleported me over, helped me get used to things, and bought me a few items (including the Reverie AO that I still use!)
After he left, I went exploring a bit. I think I visited NCI (which was the "old" NCI build at the time), picked up some free items and of course expertly placed the freebie box over my head. I think I also met up with Tateru Nino then. I joined a bunch of random groups, rolled around while seated on a physical prim sphere, and then I think I went back to the WA before I logged out because I thought that as a newbie it was my "home". ![]() |

Even though it was 2 years ago i still remember my first day lit it was a week ago. I started out in the OLD ahern welcome area, walked to the shooting gallery and decided to edit my apearance a little. Next thing i know i was pushed a few sims away into the ocean. I finished my avatar editing down there wit hthe seaweed...
I made it look sorta likea female chickie doll and went to "The Edge" in "Da Boom" to dance a little and win some money. I found this place by just nosing around. After i made money i bought myself a cheap furry avatar and found the original Club Fur (was located next to Dusun) and met some interesting furries. _____________________

I spent the first day curled up in a corner rocking myself and trying to tell myself it was all a bad dream.
![]() Honestly? I had no clue what to do. I wandered around, stared in a few clubs, and wondered what else there was to do. _____________________

After I got the hang of changing clothing and movement, I skipped the rest of Help Island. Wasnt' much there except for that, anyway (not like now, with the sandbox, and freebies area, and such). I ended up at the Welcome Area, and did a search for a store to get glasses at.
At the time, PTP transport wasn't available, but I didn't know about telehubs, so I was wandering around the telehub I had been put at, trying to figure it out, when a nice person noticed I looked new and gave me a link to somewhere to get glasses. I thought that in order to save the Landmark, I had to click "teleport" ![]() Wandered around as a human for a while, then found the Taco sim and Dwellget. Noticed they had cat avatars, and discovered how to use GOM to get some L$ for it... Put it on, and haven't really changed since. Later that day I found the Elbow Room and finally met some folks. My biggest asset back then I think was just listening, and taking note of what people were talking about. I didn't ask a lot of questions, but I noticed people were talking about "prims" and "dwell", and knew I'd find out about them someday! |

My first day I kept flying around and being bounced around by security wire and called a griefer, fatty etc. Next day I posted on the forum about this, and some guys helped me out, I got a cool plane to make, and I made it and flew around and got bounced by security wire and ejected from some land where my cool plane was returned to me piece by piece.
Nowdays I just play the forum. _____________________

When I first came into SL, I had a very rough time of it.
![]() Everytime I logged in it either was night time or the sun set shortly thereafter and I couldnt' see squat. Didn't know how to reset my Preferences to help that issue, and the world seemed really empty. I'd try flying around, which was amusing, except I kept getting stuck inside building walls that rezzed around me. Tried to "sit" my way out of them, etc. Was just awful. ![]() Heck, for some reason I'd not kept the shortcut on my desktop and I had a really hard time remembering how to log in! I kept going to the secondlife website ( I was coming from There.com, which uses it's website as the entry point). ![]() Time passed. Months passed. I came back, with friends, in voice and we found others and they helped us. Got our preference settings under control, de-uglified our avies. Learned to build. Found the Ivory Tower. Learned to upload textures. And then the fun really began. ![]() Took 4 or 5 months but, with a lil help from my friends and some strangers, my SL got underway. Haven't looked back! ![]() _____________________

"Day 1: Still tired from the move"
08-30-2006 15:11
My first few days, spent largely walking into bodies of water, were spent in an adult avatar made up almost entirely of freebie clothing and the like. The only major purchase I made was for a pair of glasses - which I still wear today. The character today is, by and large, a younger version of that original avatar.
I did some time on orientation island, growing frustrated with movement. I could not figure out camera controls at all. I left orientation island before finishing it, when a friend I wanted to meet TPed me. I figured I would never get into Second Life, but it might be fun to poke around -- for a little bit. Then, a couple weeks later, the Marianne that would be me now emerged, and was adopted. The rest is... (I'd post a photo of Marianne v 1.0b, but this thread doesn't seem to want me to). I fell in love with Sl right away from the first time i logged in.
It was like the sims but the online edition...I was surprised how much you could edit your apperance...wich made me love the game even more...for having a 'unique' AV'. I went to clubs a lot...i found out that you could actualy buy new stuff...so i started to do contests to support my shopping spree's. Tuesday was a heavenly day...then it was 'stippend day" I rated like hell...I had +1000 apperance points...wich got me a nice 650L's a week. After winning 30 contests with my av i decided that it was time to start my own business...so I could earn more then 650L a week. So I started a shop...somewhere in a deserted place called "maceday" It went fine...and later on i joined my sister's group with my shop... Right now i've ben playing SL for 2 years...SL doesn't really excite me anymore. The people change but the concept is still the same.. SL really bores me...I often take long breaks to play WoW. And now is one of those times again. |

My first day in SL, I managed to:
* Poke around the newbie sandbox * Turn myself into a blue man, by fiddling with avatar sliders * Get lost in a ring store by mistake, * Break my newbie popgun (no copy, naturally) * Hit the archery range and suck terribly at it * Turn my avatar back into something more "normal" * Make a really terrible attachment out of the newbie sword * Log off Amazingly enough, day two or three I met a one Green Fate (yes, that dude). He's the reason I got into scripting in the first place. Funny how that works, isn't it? _____________________

I skipped most of orientation island, and managed to get myself somehow dumped onto Waterhead (imagine their luck!) where I met a lot of interesting people. Particularly, Suziq Timtam, who led me by the hand for almost a hour into Yadni's Junkyard going through boxes of newbie stuff teaching me what is what, and watching me mistakenly morph my avatar from one oddity to the next, wear multiple boxes on my head, and then finally..... get things right. I also went through the "wing" phase, which every newbie seems to do at one point or another. From there, I flew off to explore the world, admiring the things people had built all across the mainland.
From my plot of land, I learned how to build and script..... concentrating more on the scripting side of things (since I was a little into geeky C stuff anyway) and started a business selling things and doing the occasional custom script. My scripting progressed, along with my business's reputation...... and just a month after I joined SL, my business was independently supporting itself. Four months and three businesses later, I'm totally hooked, and it still surprises me how far I've come from being a lost little newbie in Waterhead. The most important thing though..... I've made a lot of great friends and met a lot of wonderful people. The friends I've made and people I've met are what truly makes me believe I have had a very successful Second Life. And it'll be interesting to see where I am four months from now, and how many more great people are out there I've yet to meet. ![]() |

My first day in SL I flew around. I found a shopping mall on some tropical island that had a lot of sex toys, so I amused myself with those for a while. I grabbed copies of linden trees because they said "free to copy" and I had no clue they were in my inventory, then I got confused when I couldn't put them anywhere. I ran from people that tried to talk to me. (This was my first online game ever.) I tried building a lamp and managed to make half a sphere before giving up and swearing I would never build, its just too complicated. I made some really godawful purple pants.
I still run from people a lot when they talk to me. And the sex toys never get old. _____________________

My first day in SL (actually an evening) was spent on Prelude (the old name for Orientation Island) trying to get my avatar to look less like a lower primate. After a couple of hours, I signed off. I figured I would play with this slightly buggy bit of beta software a bit more, then uninstall.
Day two, I ran the tutorial, stations and lost the av I spent the previous night creating. I Forgot to save before trying the avatar creation station. I spent the next hour or so recreating the av. I'm not even sure if the "new" Teeny looked anything like the original one. Got to the end of the tutorial, took my first snapshot, complete with glitchy ATI rendered trees in the background. Finally found my way off Prelude soon after. I appeared in Ahern, I think. No fancy Welcome Area, just grassy hills, signs along a path and the Events Board, which gave out notecards for the 10 or so events for that day. I was alone, except for Dave Zeeman flying past. A little while later, I found more avatars, and sat in on my first event, a building class with feniks Stone. No fancy event venue, just a grassy hill in Dore. I learned about texturing stuff and rezzing prims. It was a beginners class. At this point, I decided I would stick around and not uninstall. 2 weeks later, There.com finally decided I could join their beta. I downloaded the client and logged in. Less than an hour later, I was back in SL, looking for more classes and exploring. |

I plopped up in the welcome area as a normal looking average joe wich everyone else was at the time I learned how to edit my appearence played wiht the sliders ALOT and ended a deforemed bow legged midget with a huge nose. I wandered around welcome island not much people at the time and I foudn the freebie shop got the metal dragon av and got the infamous box head syndrome I found out how to put the av on and was flying around in no time. I found out how to leave and found myself in a crowded welcome area were there were many people talking I found the way to the newbie sandbox were I met some nice people including Inky Hightower who hasnt logged on since the 2nd day here I wandered around alot flying around exploring and some how I magicly got how I am today...a short squirell. |

When I first joined Second Life, it is possible that I was the only resident from the UK. Because in those days the ToS said that you had to be American or Canadian or you were forbidden to enter the site.
The result of this was that when I was inworld, no one else was. I could fly around all day without meeting a single resident. In the end I left. But I kept reading the forums. And in the end it was the forums that got me back. Through them I became aware of the community spirit that existed (at that time). So I rejoined, and have been here ever since. _____________________

A thread for people to reflect on the "Then" and "Now" of their own Second Life. What did you do with the first days/weeks of your Second Life? How does your Second Life now measure compared to then? This is a GREAT thread! i have had lots of larfs from it ![]() My RL partner came in SL a couple of days before me. I watched through his screen for a couple of days and was very curious. He came in as a premium and so I came in the same way. i went through orientation. My partner bought some first land over in Winyah, and he started to build while I planted a little garden at the end of his 512 plot while also twiddling with the sliders on my avatar (OH GAWD! how wish we could post pics on this thread!!!). i then bought my first plot over in Shepherd because i wanted to make my OWN gaarden, which i planted full of freebie plants then i bought the two plots next to mine to make an even bigger garden! I TOO did not realize Linden trees were in inventory and went around looking for free to copy trees to plant LOL! I spend an inordinate amount of time going back and forth to Yadni's (Bless his l'il heart), so that I could pull stuff apart and learn how to build, pretty soon I was torturing prims up the ying yang! It was at this first land place I met another newbie to SL who moved in a day or two after me and his friend and we all spent loads of time experimenting with building and swapping free resources etc. A few months later I opened my first shoppe. Was a great time! A lot has changed since then and when i look back it is amazing how much we progress in SL ![]() LOL! maybe we could all post our first avatars on some website so people can have a right good giggle! Any ideas there? _____________________

When I first logged in, I've spent over an hour customizing my avatar shape on the orientation island. Before I could save it, the grid went down for 2 days (that was back in the days of 'loginproof' 1.5 meltdowns). After the grid got back, I quickly threw together a new shape which I'm using to this very day (it might not be exactly the same, sometimes it looks like my butt gets smaller after an update
![]() I rezzed in the old Ahern welcome area and promply ran away from people there. I remember playing in sandboxes the first few days and weeks, and exploring the grid. It's kinda the same now, except I have my own land so I don't need sandboxes. And I don't explore that much either. Oh yeah, and I'm much more jaded and bitter now too ![]() Second Life - Your Mess, Your Regrets ![]() _____________________
