Does anyone remember when they first fixed the sim to sim communication and you could teleport to your destination before you even hear the swoosh sound? ;p I LOVED THAT.. Somewhere along the line they broke it again. Still... Teleporting is much faster and smoother then sim border crossing. I don't even bother with that anymore...

I've just gone to look at the SLCC sims.

Sim FPS was down below 10.

With 4 people on it.

This is going to be an interesting weekend. I can't wait till it gets busy.

Looking at some of these designs... I wonder if anyone involved actually has a 'regular' PC instead of an all singing all dancing top of the range machine. Right now, I'm lagging like hell, and I'm quite sure I won't be the only one suffering.

How a commune fails
08-19-2006 08:29
From: Kim Manilow
I think this blog post on LL's "different and better way of doing work" explains all of the problems:

"Choose your Own Work. Given how dynamic the
challenges are we face, and the opportunity for increased job
satisfaction and productivity, Linden Lab places a high premium on
choosing your own work, rather than being told by anyone what to do. By
choosing your own work, you are more likely to have more fun at work
and add more value to Second Life. By setting your own goals, you are
more likely to meet them. When you commit to a team project, be
prepared to be directed by the team lead, but when deciding what
project you will take on next, rely first on your own best intuition
and the counsel of peers."

Excellent point. The trouble with every hippie commune in the history of humanity (and they existed way before hippies), is that someone has to take out the garbage. When you do what you like, you don't take out the garbage, and the place starts to smell bad.

The performance wall LL is hitting is serious and inevitable, a function of several factors of both asset management and number of sessions. The solution is expensive and time consuming. Hopefully it was already being planned and tested before reaching this point (unlikely) otherwise they will have to stall at this point and stop growth while they rethink their scalability model.

As someone who just bought land for The Avatarian Order and Liturgical Christians, I have put my faith in their finding a solution, or at least not going out of business in the next year.

May the Great Avatar Smile Upon You!

Whenever my SL friends and I get in a serious conversation about the future in SL, my advise is to certianly hope for the best. There are a lot of incredible people in SL (more everyday) and they have created many wonderful things. However, we have to realize, as in RL, there is no gauranty for the future.

LL has made it very clear that they are following they're own path. If that path coincides with your path or mine, great, enjoy it. But don't expect it because you may find yourself being disappointed, or worse, relieved of money you spent in an SL future that did not materialize. I'm not saying that you shouldn't make plans, only that it's the risk you have to accept.

The main thing we need to try to do is enjoy what SL does have to offer.

heh

Pray to Saint Jude for your answer; he is the patron saint of the Lost Cause. :p

LOL sorry this made me giggle. And to make sure I am PC, no I am not degrading everyone's believes (I feel like I am doing a pre-movie warning in a Kevin Smith film).

It is horrid building but MAN I think it is worse doing textures. I have to use myself as the model all the time because no one rezzes. The only way I can GET any resolution is to take pictures on my avatar. Then my customers also have a hard time putting on their new outfit and waiting for it to rez :/

I know someone else mentioned this in a previous thread - moving things around in your inventory just kicks me right off the game. This is very aggrivating when you are making new outfits and trying to organize. Especially when you find yourself doing it three times a day :/

Hahahahahaha! So true! So apt!

Well, I have been in near-panic mode about this, cause clearly there is no future for me in a world that moves like molasses.

Torley did say that at least they knew it was going on. That's something. (Not much, but something. Now I can relax a bit.)

However, she didn't say that a fix would be coming (except for some fix to the time dilation part). Otherwise, she said they would be working on it. Which leads me to think, maybe it is just too dang many people, and a fix is impossible.

Also, I'm still curious if it is just stinginess about getting enough machines, and good enough machines. If it is, well, they are definitely being penny-wise and pound-foolish.

The second thing I wonder is if there is a reason for them not to really care. Such a reason could be (1) they are selling it next week anyway, (2) sim performance doesn't matter to people like American Apparel (seems rather unlikely), or (3) performance is better (though not ideal) on the private islands, and the mainland people don't count.

Whether or not any of those are true, I'm thinking that it is also probably a combination of the following:

. it takes them a while to even BELIEVE that something may be wrong
. it takes them longer to get anyone to work on it

In any case, I will be hoping for the best. But if they don't get a hold on this, then SL will be effectively over for content creators (and racers, and many, many other groups). I will try to be patient.

coco

EDIT: I see on Torley's blog that she has responded that more or better machines will not fix it.

... and people wonder why I had 20 in my theatre watching the video relay, rather than at the 'official' sims.

The fact that the video screen wasn't working there seems to be irrelevant.

Well it's safe to say it's not our computers fault since it seems to be effecting the sims. This is what happens to a sim when someone new and inexperianced attempts to create it's content lol. I don't blame anyone we all learned the same way. I just wish the servers could handle the loads on them hehe. Since the servers can barely handle a empty sandbox these days there is a problem. XD
