Zeph I just bought a nvidia geforce 6200 because my ATI radeon 9800 fried after about a year. And of course, right after the warranty expired. I have no idea why. It had these weird splotches happening and then rainbow dots all over the ground and textures. A friend of mine had the same problem with the very same card when he ran SL. I'm hoping the nvidia will fare better. So far so good!

I'm using an ATI Radeon 9000 w/ 128mb. I purchased an nVidia card about 3 months ago w/256mb. All was well for about a week, then I started seeing green dots on the screen. A day or two later the board stopped working, so I switched back to the ATI card. I have always used ATI cards without any major problems. I actually picked up the nVidia card based on the positive comments in the forums I would like to get another video card, but I'm hesitant to try another nVidia card.

Nvidia Geforce 7800GTX and I love it. I've had Nividia cards for the last few years and never had any problem with them.

I've been using an ATi x800 for the past year or so in my main gaming rig and I am very happy with it. As someone who in no way swears allegiance to any hardware vendor (I have two ATi's, three nVidia, three 3dFX, two Matrox, etc..), I can tell you that at this moment, the most powerful graphics card is an nVidia.

Bewildered and Dismaied

Cuz this is my Reasoning behind it .. see i have had a Nvidia geforce 5200 fx card .. and keep crashing ..so i got a nvidia verto geforce 6600gt APG x8 ddr3 card and get the same results as the 5200 card .. things lock up and a crash ..
So im going to see what happens when i use a ati card an ATI Radeon 9600 128MB DDR VGA Card w/DVI Tv Out V36.
cuz i cant stay on any more using the nvidia card ... .. and my comp dosent crashe only sl crashes so i know is not my comp ... there something else that is wrong ..
this is why the curisoty of this poll
im really hopeing the the 1.7 update will help me too but ... im not sure at this point and time

Nvidia is the only way to go. SL is based on OpenGL, a graphical standard that Nvidia closely adheres to, while ATi is keen on ignoring. If you had a bad experience with running SL on an Nvidia, it was probably a hardware problem, or an outdated driver or two...

I'm using an eVGA GeForceFX 5500 256MB AGP card with the 78.01 drivers, RivaTuner, and the PCI Latancy Tool and SL runs smooth as hell. Especially with RivaTuner's HighPerformance settings (SL isn't the most high end graphics wise so there's little difference in graphics unless you max out all your settings) and resetting the latancy to 64. Average between 15 - 30 FPS depending on the sim. Like in The Forest right now I'm running at 20 FPS.

i dunno what eggy is talking about. i have exclusively used ati cards for 3d modelling in open gl and they have functioned superbly. i think nvidia probably has the edge if you only play video games, though. i <3 ATI i'm using a radeon x850 XT. the beauty of it is that it has a built in vent so that the hot air is blown directly out of the case rather than collecting inside. this is an amazing thing for SL because sl uses 100% cpu 100% of the time, creating a lot of heat! with my p4 3.4 ghz with hyperthreading turned off, i can play in most conditions with all the graphics settings turned on, a 256 draw distance and with antialiasing maxed out from the v-cards settings on 1600x1200 resolution. my fps ranges from 20 to 80.

I've always been an Nvidia user, but bought an ATI x800 Pro and had alot of glitches with it while trying to use SL. I returned it and got an Nvidia 6800GT OC and it has performed beautifully.

From: Ingrid Ingersoll but but... you said your radeon 9800 crapped out too. with the 9800, very occasionally the water and a few other surfaces would become a translucent rainbow crystal surfaces when i resized the screen. fixed with minimizing and restoring the screen or reloading the game. if memory serves, the problem with ati cards in the beta and first year of SL was ati wasn't working with LL to provide patches to the driver to accomodate SL's rendering engine. with my new card i get zero problems with sl. also, my cpu's temperature is down from around 70 degrees to around 55 degrees.

Nvidia GeForce FX 5900 Works well for me, almost makes up for my pethetic 256MB of RAM, should think its the only thing keeping SL playable

When if first joined I was using a radeon 8500 all in wonder - that was in 1.0 - and it would do all sorts of sporadic nasty things from texture flickering to locking up my PC.
Once I was well and truely addicted I went out and got a Nvidia FX5400 (I think) - and had absolutely no problems all the way up until my computer (literally) blew up one night (no fault of SL's there)
I got all the junker bits in the house and put together a minimal spec machine I dubbed 'old crappy' with the old Radeon 8500 in it - suprisingly it ran very well - none of the old screw ups it used to have at all.
Now I've build a new machine and using an Nvida 6600 --- and after some intial problems (glitching - freezing - crashing - which actually turned out to be a powersupply problem - not enough amperage) - I am quite happy with it.
I think nowadays the gap between which works best is closing - personally after my initial swap from ati to nvidia I was more impressed with the nvidia card for non SL reasons.
Siggy.

I'm using a Nvidia 6600GT, 256mb ram, PCI Express. I am able to bump up draw to 192 and run pretty decent fps (decent for SL, that is). I've used mostly Nvidia for years, but I've had both a 5600 and a 5700 die after nearly a year of SL each. You can never have enough cooling fans these days.

ATI Radeon 9600XT Dual with 256 RAM. with Omega drivers. Works reasonably well for my purposes.
