Tracking Down A Script With My Name On It

Over time I've gotten IMs from people asking about a script called "Nimbus Glow", they say my name is on it as the creator and ask me where or if I sell it. The problem is, I never made a script by this name. So I'm left with turning them away with no clue to either of us as to how to get it or where it came from.

I was able to find an object that uses the script and sure enough my name is on it. I've contacted the owner to see if I can find where they got it and follow the chain.

So I'm left wondering, who else has this script? Where did they get it? Who really made it?

It's a nice script, creates a nice particle glow around objects making them look to have a carona. I'm guessing the true creator used a script of mine (I have made particle scripts and given them away freely in the past, I'm thinking it came from a cloud particle script (hence the nimbus, but I never named it that)) and for some reason or another my name stuck.

I'm not mad or looking for vengence or looking to shake the person down for money. But I am curious behind this as it's been about a year now that I've started getting IMs on it. And I would like to be able to point people in the right direction when I get IMs on where they can get a copy (and maybe get a copy myself). And also be able to give proper credit for it.

Also I think it'd be a fun expirement to see if I can actualy link this all the way back to the original creator (I probably won't be able to, but I'm going to try!), since stuff in SL is passed around so crazily like the game Telephone.

So if you have a copy or know someone who does and can tell me where you/they got it from, please do! Also if you have a copy of the script (I'm guessing it's fully permed) please drop it on me, might help me figure out what script of mine it came from and also it looks nice!

I don't have that script, but from the effect you describe, it sounds exaxctly like a particle script I have written, only the timeline is much to wrong for me to have been the source of this.

Well if it leads back to you anyway I'll let you know. ;) :p

I've seen other similar effects as well, so I'm sure it's not the only one out there. I hope though it's the only one with my name on it though or else things will get more complicated, hehe.

Interesting, the script "Glow Nimbus" was made by Jopsy, I'm sure he won't mind my acknowledgement here, but I altered it slightly and released it free as "Glow Nimbus 2" with reference to the original creator. I've never seen a "Nimbus Glow" though.

[edit]
Just to say, it's a particularly nice particle flame effect with a glow that I use in all my lanterns. You can see examples at Svarga although at this time none are copiable I think.

Now Oz, that simply won't do! Please change your post, as in it's current pleasant form it's just not suitable for the General forum! ;)

I've had similar things happen with my scripts over time as well - they pop up in lots of different places doing things that originally they didn't do. I think that's great personally.

The lamp posts near Withnail Academy have this script (or one similar to it. I recognized the name).

Not in SL to check on the specifics, but they are free to copy, so that's how I got them (months ago). I used a modified version to make the lights on my tower in Caledon.

I hope you find them Oz! Having made vendors in the past I know what it can be like. Except mine is a lot weirder, given it can be anything people sell from my vendor. Having "Excuse me, I have a question about your Bondage Straps" there when you log in can freak you out a little. :p

Of course I just have to tell them to look at the owner of the vendor instead of the creator, so I hope you track him/her down!

Laukosargas, Hmm, odd, wonder if they were duplicating the effect or something. See that just adds another interesting level! Hehe.

Moopf, Sadly I come from a land before where forums were nice and pleasent and ponies were free to ride and you could release scripts into the wild without being chased off by god knows what. I fail at this new dramah forum and thus is why I am rarely seen here anymore. I only wish to promote peace! And occasionaly chaos, but the good kind, like that sponsored by Eris/Discordia!

And I'd only really get mad if someone took something I knew I had made no-permed etc. I don't mind people using works I've made freely available, but stealing would bother me. But like I said I think it probably came from something I made open and even if it didn't, at this point theres nothing I could do and it's not a big dealy script so I wouldn't care anyway. :) At this point I just want to follow the trail and see where it leads me! :D

I have seen it...(OR? similar) both as a non copy and no mod (In the sim Verloren at the pond) and a copy version... in my inv... IF its the same I cant tell but on them I have seen its Jopsy' s name.

The copy version I dont know where I got... It was long ago...

Thanks Dyne I'll check it out next time I'm in world. :)

Zapoteth, haha, I'm glad I've not sold anything like that, I can only imagine all the crazy stuff that gets put in vendors. Although it would lead to humorous IMs sometimes. I also usualy tell people to ask the owner of the object it's in or whatever, but until now I've never really tried to investigate further into it.

Oh you just wouldn't believe how many of those IMs I get every single day! It seems that people don't really understand the difference between the creator and owner tag. I've found out about all kinds of weird stuff being for sale through those sort of IMs - some of it just boggles the mind :)

Hehe, you know what I want them to do, is make it so when you mouse hover over text boxes and the like you get a tooltip explaining it further, like if you hover over Creator you may get "This person originaly created the object but may not know how it's being used now." or some such... but I suppose no one would really take the time to hover over stuff. :P

Heh yea! I've had a couple of odd things like this happen too. I would hazard a guess that the object was possibly made by you and the script is a copy/mod of the Jopsy script. People tend to look at the object not look inside at the script ? ...

Hehe, there HAVE been some really weird ones, I just couldn't work out what they are from the name.

And of course ones that have gone:

"I have a question about your eyes"
"My eyes?"
"Yes, I want to know if you could make them transfer for me so I can give them to a friend"
"My eyes?"
"Yes the ones you sell?"
"I sell my eyes?!?! WTF! You Freak!!"

Ok maybe not quite that bad, but I've thought people were trying to chat me up a couple of times :p

You learn after a while :D

Oooh, the plot thickens!.

I made a light particle script. It was quite unusual at the time and alot of people wanted it. It was a modified Anna Omega particle script. I just logged in to check out the name of the creator of the script and it was made by 'Zimxur Spade'.

Would that be you, Oz? :)

If Jopsy did make it, I'm not sure how that would work. I was thinking they used a script I created as a base and then renamed it etc. which they could have done with the intention of doing the same thing Jopsy did and named it similar.

I suppose creator names could somehow switch from object to script, maybe through a bug or exploit? But I've never seen anything reproducable like that that I can recall.

actually I mean the creator name on the script could be the original creator and the creator name on the object could be you. ?? is this possible? in the inventory an object like this would appear as "no-one" I think, mmm ... mumble mumble ...

Zapoteth, haha thats great. Thats one thing I love about SL is the odd conversations that come up because we can sell body parts. Kinda like on Futurama when the guy is selling livers and stuff on the street.

Petgirl, ah yeah that sounds like the one mentioned before. The one I've seen is switched with "Nimbus Glow", I'll still take a look though.

Starax, I usualy do use Ama's base script but I don't have an alt or even knew there was someone by that name, hehe. I think theres only three of us Spade's left around nowdays.

No this is definitly the creator tag of the scripts with my name on it. I'm not aware of anything with my name on an object as a creator of anything I didn't make... yet... I'm sure theres something out there though floating around that'll get me in trouble or something.

Just for the record in case someone does do that ^, I'm not a griefer! ;_;

I have seen objects like that though, where no one is listed as the creator. SL is very odd.

I think if an object in your inventory has multiple creators (think scripts and prims) then when you look at its properties. It will show 'nobody' as the creator.

This one(s) is only made by a Prim - No scripts in and made by one ava.
