There Actually Is Such a Thing as Too Many Updates

Coming from the update drought that was TSO, I have always been thrilled to have the updates in SL.
SL is much more preferable to TSO, where updates came maybe every six months and weren't much when they did come, and nobody would tell you what might be coming between them.
And I like the updates, even though I understand and sometimes experience that it will generally be harder and harder for me to play as these updates are installed.
But last week, I experienced a different feeling for the first time. It was like, hey, wait, can't I just catch my breath for a LITTLE while?
There is such a thing as things changing too fast, with scarcely any time to settle down and play.
I do love the updates, and all the work they put into them.
But . . . I never thought I'd say this, but I'm beginning to wish they would go at this a bit more slowly, so I'd have time to play instead of being up against updates so often.
Instead of just getting the last one to work, settling down, thinking things are going to be okay - and then wham, here comes another - go to preview, cross your fingers, hope THAT works, then wait while it goes into the game, wondering if it will work at all, and what what problems will come with it that will cause patches, and should you just wait a day till it shakes out, etc. etc. etc.
And - let's face it - with every update, some people get cut out of being able to play at all, and for all I know, the next time it could be me. That's anxiety-causing.
It's okay every so often, but too often, and a person feels kind of battle fatigued or something.
Especially if you're not the kind who just loves a whole new technical challenge to figure out every week. (That's not fun, that's a headache!)
I'd like a few weeks just to PLAY, without worrying about whether my computer is going to do things or not.

Actually the frequent updates could be solved quite simply if they stopped giving everyone the full game install each time instead of just patching the files that need to be patched, creating a smaller filesize to download.

Updates are good - every update fixes a few bugs and makes the whole thing work just that lil bit better.
Major updates also give new shiney to play with - which lets us push the boundries a lil further.
It's all good.
No such thing as too many updates.

coco Why? If there was a "breather" then folks running OSX 10.3.9 or whatever wouldn't be able to play until, what, next month? Good idea. Wait, no.

I would like an update every day if the updates removed bugs, rather than adding them.

*snickers* I love the updates.. because I can get in touch with my RL again!
Seriously, if it fixes bugs or gives us sparklies, I'm happy. Or that could just be the caffiene talking.

From: Lordfly Digeridoo You can't wait 3 minutes to download a 20mb client? 3 minutes? Wow, slow connection? Only takes me about 20-30 seconds (if that) to download. (note: I'm just bein' a wiseass as my title states, not actually tryin' to piss anyone off even tho it really does only take 20-30 seconds for me to download the client)

From: Surreal Farber And finally! Classified autorenew. *no* shit, there, Surreal. That may be the best addition of all -- especially the new clickthrough data for each ad. Made the marketer in me cream himself when I saw that.

coco I'm sure the folks with texture loading problems, random crashes, or simply not being able to get on don't share the same view. When something is broken I prefer it fixed sooner than later - and if that means many updates I'm willing to wait the extra 5 - 10 minutes to download a new client. It's not like they update because they're bored or have nothing better to do - each update addresses problems. They may not be problems for you, or me, but they are problems for someone. You're 'breather' may be someone elses 'I can't log on for another day' - with the shoe on the other foot I'm sure your opinion would be different.

From: Lordfly Digeridoo You can't wait 3 minutes to download a 20mb client? 2 minutes. But I shouldn't have to download when its just a patch to let mac users in. Just like they shouldn't have to download just to let windows users in. Think in scale - unless its a major update- use a patch. It saves LL some bandwidth too.
