In response to some of the criticism of this year's winner, many of the activities shown work just fine if you join the right group, buy the right product, or go to the right event. As in RL, there's plenty of crap out there, too, but I have two great sailboats, I've been to some cool swordfighting events, and I was griefed out of my old sim by people who seemed plenty satisfied with their guns. The creative side was somewhat limited to a variety of avatars dancing, but that's a pretty big part of the creative side of SL. I can do all of the activities shown as well... but you don't see a boat cross a sim border, you don't see the lag added when four avatars are close in a combat area. If these are activities to be encouraged (as I would like) then perhaps the performance issues necessary to allow them to be should be focused on. If ultimately this is our world and our imagination, the tools for realizing it should work. As long a serious frame rate drops occur in any setting as more avatars come within camera view it will always be difficult to be creative in any area that requires action. _____________________

I'm actually more concerned about the depiction of a pretty precise reproduction of a Gundam from Gundam Wing (the beautiful robot avatar with gatlings in the chest), wich is an intellectual property of Sunrise (and i think Bandai in the US), the two most lawsuit jumpy anime companies of all japan. I'm not sure what the laws on the matter are, if this video is used as a commercial trailer, but if iwas in Linden shoes i'd definately give them a look before using it.

Personally, I found the trailer to be flashy but to have very little relevance to my second life. Much too much focus on the action part, which is definitely not where SL shines the most.
Javier's trailer offered a more rounded view of the product, IMHO, and had the cool building timelapse, which is an important part of the product. Still, congrats to the winners. Wendel |

If these are activities to be encouraged (as I would like) then perhaps the performance issues necessary to allow them to be should be focused on. It's doubtful SL will ever excel as a Shooter or a racing game; the platform prioritizes versatility over performance, which is why most of us are here. Nevertheless, plenty of people manage to enjoy shooting and racing (and fantasy RPG and puzzle-solving and skee ball), and afterward they can teleport to their Spanish villa and tweak each others' nipples in the hot tub or build a colossal replica of their favorite cartoon robot. No, new users aren't likely to find themselves in the middle of a racing-yacht-robot-battle, but if you watch the video, the main activity shown was people in silly outfits dancing, balanced with music, sports, battle, and exploration among other things. Seems pretty well-rounded and accurate, even if it left out building. It even nodded to our kink culture in the goth tango scene, while leaving out the graphic details. _____________________

![]() This video was made for the action catagory. So, it's um, gonna have action. I think it's a fine video. Thought it could use more bikes though ![]() Congrats to the winners! Well done! Super Bike Racing lives at Misp. Come see. /end ad _____________________

Not much to do with my Second Life

It was an entry in the Action/Adventure category, so naturally it was focused on those things. I'd like to see the other category winners; perhaps they would have more connection to the social, building, and shopping parts of SL where I spend my time.
As for the question that somebody raised -- where's the sex? -- the contest was limited to PG content. |

I enjoyed the video a lot and I think they did a great job. Congrats to the winners! I look forward to seeing some of the other entries and category winners. Oh, and whoever did the VO has a future in voice over work!

I actually am not sure about the US laws on the matter, no trademarks are visible (as there are none on the original), but still the robot is an intellectual property. I doubt that anyone could use, for instance, Mickey Mouse in their product's commercial trailer without asking Disney's permission... Might be wrong though. _____________________

I'm no lawyer, but I know when Marvel sued City of Heroes over users making character replicas, Marvel lost. Users selling intellectual property may be open to legal action if some corporation decided it was worth setting the precedent, but building and wearing such avs is so far allowed, and displaying them in a video is probably too murky and risky for most corporations to bother pursuing it.

The problem is not the making of the robot (LL doesn't prosecute replicas as long as they don't contain trademarks), but the use of such robot in a possible commercial trailer by LL itself... If this was legal anyone could use any character owned by another company for their own commercials safely, wich i doubt _____________________

It's a trailer, it's an action/adventure trailer!

First, let me thank those SL folks who had kind words to say about our movie Second Life: Get One. It is appreciated. But, wow! I’ve been making videos and films for 30 years and I’ve never received so many nasty or mean-spirited comments about my work. Gosh, my editing is crap. My shot selection sucks. I didn’t cover the entire SL experience in two minutes. Talk about griefers! I don’t know how I made such a nice living all these years. Folks, we are a middle-aged husband and wife team with a highly successful production business who worked our virtual butts off on this film. And it’s a TRAILER!! Have you ever watched movie trailers? This was a TRAILER, pure and simple -- an assortment of clips arranged in such a way to (hopefully) elicit excitement and anticipation in viewers. Not education. Not information. Not explanation. Not all-inclusive coverage. A 2-minute action/adventure trailer!!
We joined Second Life in May, heard about the contest and decided to put our experience to work and have some fun. We decided on action/adventure and went out looking for what we thought was ACTION and ADVENTURE. Flying, sailing, biking, motorcycling, race car driving and yes, 17 seconds of swordplay and gunplay. That’s 15% of the total film time. A lot of these shots were done documentary-style as the action was happening. Yes, I actually saw residents doing this stuff: race cars and motorcycles whipping around the track and swordfights and gunfights. Just because you don’t participate in these things, doesn’t mean they don’t exist in SL and that others enjoy these activities. Some of the nicest people I met in SL were in combat zones and they’re not griefers. There were 8 categories for entering trailers, and building was one. Thus, we made a conscious decision not to include building in the action/adventure genre. Nor did we think shopping, education, socializing, clothing design or Gorean role-playing belonged in this category. I can assure you there was no knowledge or intent of including any trademarked or copyrighted images being in the film. One cannot possibly know the origin of everything that exists in SL. There are SL police to look for and remove violations. If it’s there, a reasonable assumption is that it was created there. What is one supposed to do, conduct an exhaustive search of trademark and copyright databases to see if anything that may be seen in a shot is protected? Get real. |
