For those of you who haven't already seen the winner, make sure you check it out. It is really well done by this group:

Direct link to YouTube:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xxj8RTW4ev4

Now for the :D funny :D part: they picked a video that is nearly half filled with weapons and vehicles, two things that don't work well in Second Life, and not a single example of building in progress. What's the deal Linden Lab? Is this platform or a game?

I'm suprised this is the winning video.... dont get me wrong, it's a VERY cool video... but it seems to be very vague filled with quick cuts and no explanations. I thought LL was looking for a good trailer to show investors, etc.

"Ooh, SHINY" goes a long way with investors nowadays. Actually, I've had the opportunity to speak with Silver and Goldie inworld. Interesting stuff they've assembled, and what they have planned, piqued my interest muchly. :)

Yeeeaaahhh! Looks fuckin' cool, I'm gonna get this game and run around with a big awesome gun and shoot up the place and drive my cool car or fly in my spaceship all over this highly detailed world! Because I'm free to tempt fate without inhibitions and court danger without fear!

I am sure they worked hard on it but I hated the boats in it, I hated the clothes, I hated the clubs and architecture, furniture, and design in SL were not showcased. I am glad they had a violin, I wish they had featured the cool flute one of the content creators made. I wish there were some scenes with the humongous space ships that are being built on the sandboxes every day. I dunno a lot of what SL is about is missing.

This video could have been made last year....

Aye - not Typical of SL
08-23-2006 09:41
It was a flashy lil film to be sure - but it does not represent what SL is in my impresssion.

I have never fired a gun, raced a car, or sailed a boat in SL. All these seem way too cumbersome to be able to really do well in SL or even be fun.

The vid made SL look like a lot of games out there, racing, shooting, 'mortal kombat'.

But as they said - it is to hype up interest in a very short span of time.

Watching someone build would be probably boring in the short run. Time lapse would be good tho for that.

*shrugs* and wanders off to squish more prims.....

I believe I saw this while watching the SLCC at Lewis Nerd's "The Venue."

My response to it right away was: Unrealistic. People would get on SL and discover that they can't do the things that were shown the way they were shown. (You can TRY to do the things shown; I mean, you can play around with them, but they won't work smoothly at all for many if not most players.)

I guess if the movie is intended for investors, though, they won't know that.

Yeah winning video targeted where all other similar videos previously were targeted at.

The party going, gangster, mafia type and the current MMORPG players (oh yeah show them the guns and swords .. don't mention these dont' work in 90% of SL).

I see discrimination here, no where do I see Goreans shown, or Yiffying or age-players.

I've never done anything depicted in that film yet. Perhaps I've just led a sheltered SL so far. It's certainly not going to attract people looking for a creative outlet is it.

Heh, guess I'm not the only one who thought it was a great video but not an accurate Representation of what SL really is like.

Still it was pretty damn good.

I would've shown cooler things like:
Being shot at a Sandbox while trying to build
Textures taking foooorrrrrreverrrrr to rez
LAG!!!
Updates updates and more updates

And everyones favorite: Plywood Box on the Head :D

I much preferred last year's winning trailer. And the music too. Although the style and diversity of this year's video improves towards the end, I find most of the presentation so like a cheap arcade game it's almost embarrassing.

This year's winner or last year's - guess which one I'll be showing to my friends.

I liked the video. I am not a big builder in SL. I am on more to Socialize. And I have done some of the things in the video. I think it captures the creative and versial side without mentioning the down sides. Witch may improve some day. It would have been nice to get across all the hard work that goes in to makeing it possible but it is a short marketing trailer. I admitt that I am also fond of it cause I got to be in it. YAY

My Take on This Film
08-23-2006 12:14
Dearly Darlings,

I thought the Narrator did a stunning job. It was flashy but certainly not my Second Life experience. I want to know where they shot this film-- there were no nasty scenes of people bouncing off "Do Not Enter or Fly Zones."

Ever Yours,

Mrs. Showdog Tiger

This is the best building video I've seen from SL, taking an object from plywood cube to gorgeous guitar with one of SL's top creators.

In response to some of the criticism of this year's winner, many of the activities shown work just fine if you join the right group, buy the right product, or go to the right event. As in RL, there's plenty of crap out there, too, but I have two great sailboats, I've been to some cool swordfighting events, and I was griefed out of my old sim by people who seemed plenty satisfied with their guns. The creative side was somewhat limited to a variety of avatars dancing, but that's a pretty big part of the creative side of SL.

It would be cool to see a video where the central character "levels up" by getting dressed, learning some building, and opening a store, throwing a club-party, getting married (maybe a few times :D ) and etc.

I think it was a very good video well done. I think the winner deserves a pat on the back and a congratulations. Why all the negativity sheesh. Congrats to the winner!
