If you are having issues with being able to change your password the regular way (e-mail has changed, gave a fictitious e-mail, whatever), try this:
  1. Go to www.secondlife.com/password
  2. Fill in your avatar name
  3. Click "send instructions"
  4. On the "Instructions sent" page there's a link that says "E-mail no longer active? Click here."
  5. When you click there it will ask you to complete one of the following:
Your security question that you set up
The city you were born in
Complete three names from off your friends list
The last amount LL billed to your credit card

Upon answering correctly, it will let you reset your password. Good luck!

Many thanks to PetGirl Bergman for this info!

It didn't accept ANY of my answers. Not the friends (who btw there were last names on that list that I don't even know) ... not the billing which is 0 because I won't give them CC info ... and not my home location. This is more ridiculous then the first method! Again ... JUST GIVE US BACK OUR PASSWORDS AND LET US WORRY ABOUT IT!!!!!!

*Just a side note .. if you go about trying it with the email no longer valid approach ... you will NOT be able to try again .. so don't bother .. it does not work. LL is really on the ball with this one .. and if you didn't see my eyes rolling as I said that .. its' a shame.

Are the people for whom this doesn't work trying to restore access to accounts that are over the 5 accounts per household limit?

Just as a note before anyone is concerned: You can't attempt to reset someone else's account this way, since it checks your IP against a list of known IPs for that user. If there is no match, you are asked to call in and are provided a number.

This has been confirmed by a few of us who were worried that this would lead to rampant abuse.

Thank you. Kind of you to test that, as many wondered.

Yup am having trouble w/ that, but was assured in the below thread, that I could get it fixed by calling I guess.

/108/d4/135987/1.html

However I also received an IM from someone letting me know that they had gotton all 8 of their accounts fixed right away.

Am not looking forward to calling on Monday, but since the two 'alts' I was unable to fix are officers of my land holding group I will have to.

It's bad in a way to hear that they are allowing accounts over 5 per household to be restored, since they aren't supposed to exist. It's not bad having more than five per household, but it's more evidence that the systems they design don't work properly. Like the sim border crossing system. Or the system that is supposed to display other people's avatars. Or deliver object definitions and textures fast enough to display them when you turn to see them. Or the inventory storage system. Or the inventory management system.

Say, where are the hardware IDs stored?

The got our real names and addresses, our email addresses, I think - did they get our phone numbers too?

Phoenix - thanks for the head's up - I had one alt that could not get back on, LL said they had no security question/answer on file, that was yesterday and I resigned myself to a phone call next week.
What you described worked great - I chose the 3 friends option, LL supplied 3 last names off the list, and I had to supply the matching first names (I had to have an alt check the spelling on one, love it when my alts pull together as a team *grin*)
After correctly supplying the first names I was allowed to create a new password - so no having to try to phone LL on monday..............
Thanks for supplying solutions instead of joining the group bitchin' session !! (Damn Gorean, furry newbs musta done this !!)

The friend's list thing was easy for me. I'm all about the social side of SL. :p

I fixed my passwords last night, and now they are reset again, exept this time it didn't accept any of the same answers I did last night so I can't use any of my alts for the weekend. So very very not impressed.

Hardware IDs are a joke, and nonenforcable.

Um... I dunno, Suze. There's 3 people at this address who have SL accounts and all have alts. We prolly have anything up to 20 accounts all for different purposes ranging from primary main account to business alts to 'silly-name' alts.

I managed to recover all of them so I don't see a problem there.

I didn't attempt to reset someone else's account this way, Bela. I tried to reset my main avi's account. It was the first account I tried to reset.

I answered all the questions and got a phone number to call as a reply. No different IPs and no more than 5 accounts per household.
