From past experience, this usually has one of two causes.
A griefer's grid attack is the most likely. Some idiot releases a rapidly self-replicating object, and it acts like a denial of service attack, overloading the servers. Such issues rarely give time for warnings.
The other possibility is a database failure in the asset servers. We may well be having scalability issues. The many new users we have now are certainly far more than what was origiinally designed for.
It could be back up in 5 minutes, or down for a day or more. Typical seems to be 1 to 3 hours.
*sigh*

Well, they finally posted a message saying it's down...20 minutes later.
Funny thing is, it says it's due to a teleporting issue. WTF?
a) If it was taken down due to a teleporting issue, they'd give warning. b) If it was taken down due to a teleporting issue, they would have removed everyone in a controlled way, rather than just having the whole place go to pieces bit by bit. c) I know for a fact the asset server was borked. Lotsa people were talking in IMs about scripts messing up before SL died on me, and people here have been talking about asset server issues.
So, the question is, are LL so daft that they can't see the real problem, or are they lying to us so we don't realize ... something?
At least it's back up now, but it still poses the question...where they lying to us, or blind & stupid? Before you jump to conclusions, think about it...

Ya, I ended up logged to a infohub (my home wasn't available due to "computer problems" . Everyone coming in was ruthed, as well as me -- though I can only assume on me because I only consisted of my prim attachments. I an all others had no money. I did not bother to try and teleport, as others had mentioned it did not work. No presence information nor any IMs to people who were likely to be on. I was able to search for people to an extent. I flew as far as I could before hitting a border, and noted that a few people were on, at least. I crashed myself while trying to take a picture of a Japanese garden in Albion. FWIW, Snapshots were crashing me this morning, similarly, as were removing attachments while in edit mode - both things that had not caused me trouble recently. Presence information has also been hit and miss. Sounds like something is fairly seriously wrong. Mari

I posted a reply to the Blog post about the grid going down. We'll see if they actually let it through or not. I'm posting it here so someone will get to read it if, for some reason, they decide they don't want it on their blog. It's been approved, but no reply. From: someone Just curious about something.
If it was *just* a teleporting issue, then why was the asset server having problems? And why, when I came back, was everything in my land reverted to how it was around an hour before SL fell apart?
I don’t work with these servers, so maybe I’m wrong…but would a “performance issue affecting teleporting” mean my sim had to be rolled back, and the asset server was haywire for over an hour? Nevermind the fact that, rather than taking the grid down, it just collapsed bit by bit…

Sounds like the server did not backup before the crash ( server save did not happen ). Hence the sim reverted back to the condition before the crash( of when ever the last server save was ). Server saves are needed to insure the contents inthe sim are saved incase the sim crashes). I seen this haopen and its not pretty! lost content etc.......NO FUN!

For what it's worth, when I was able to get back on last night, the work I had in progress was just as I had left it. The last script that I had successfully dropped into an item was there, and the next item, which had failed to accept the script, was still needing the script.
Annoying, but so far, survivable.
