Today, for me, better.
NOWHERE NEAR 1.6, and certain places completely unplayable. (Go visit braunworth if you think SL is OK.)
- walking around is fine in areas where time dilation > 0.8 - chatting is fine - flying is possible, but sim crossings more glithchy than 1.7, and world seems empty because it rezzes so slow - textures SLOW. In fact, experimenting with textures is not possible. Everything is gray smoke for too long.
For me, at least, it's laggy but somewhat playable.
Too laggy to build much, and I still can't land an aircraft because the runway rez is too slow. So I'm still waiting.

Nexus Prime appears pretty slowly now, still slower than it did in 1.6, to my eye.
In the relatively empty Morris sandbox, I was surprised to see how slowly it was appearing. There wasn't much there to slow it down.
There used to be a piece of advertising propaganda that said the streaming technology made the world appear by the time you looked at. This was never true for me, but is even less true now.
One thing people should keep in mind is comparing how fast the world seems to rez now compared to how it used to be is whether or not you used to use a flying aid and how fast you flew in the past compared to now. When I started, I flew slowly, with no flight script to speed things up, so the world had more time to rez as I slowly made my way through it, and I was exploring, taking time t look at things.
Now I always have a flight assist of some sort, and I am flying fast, not exploring, either going somewhere in a hurry or flying fast for fun.
So the subjective feelling of slow rez times may be partly psychological.

My Nvidia drivers were about a year old on both machines. I updated them and have seen a remarkable performance increase. Now I feel like those people who say they wish they'd braved knee replacements ten years before they did. The last time I had updated per SL's suggestion, it was an Intel bios update and lo unto that doorstop. I like to never have gotten it working again.
But I'm in good shape now. The update has problems yes yes yes' but I've done what I could to help myself. Gonna go clean out some inventory now.
