What a great horror movie this would make, "The Doors That Spam an Expensive House." It's got a nice spooky ring to it, like "The People Under the Stairs" or "The Thing From Beyond the Grave."

Machinimatrix people, you paying attention? This one's machinima gold, I'm tell you. :)

My general policy is that I offer updates on purchases within a year. When I rebuild or catch a major flaw, I go back through and pull the names of all purchasers within the past year. I save each month's sales history and use an update server to send out product. Right now, I have a house that's in the final stages of major rebuild and re-texture, when finished I will send it out to all buyers from the past year. They can choose whether they want the updated version or not themselves.

Well, since a house is just about the easiest thing in SL to make, if you paid L$1000 for one, it better do everything short of wipe your... well, you know.

It takes all of 2 seconds to comment out the line that causes an object to whisper, so if this builder has to be "working on a script to fix the spam", something is very wrong. I'm more inclined to believe that he's not "working on" anything, but he's instead waiting to stumble across a door script he can steal that doesn't whisper. He obviously doesn't possess the knowledge to have scripted the doors himself if he thinks it's a big deal to make them keep quiet.

In the future, you might want to stick to doing business only with merchants who offer a guarantee. I don't sell houses, but everything I do make and sell comes with a 100% quality satisfaction guarantee right on the box. There's no reason this guy couldn't do the same unless he knows he's selling things that people are going to complain about.

one of the easiest things to build and not worth L1000. In world i run a homes and prefab company we do good trade and have many houses over the L1000. Considering the hours somone has spent to build a house the cost of textures, there experience, the cost of tools, scripts, sculpties and animations the time they may have spent furnishing that house the individual furniture items. You have to be a complete imbosile to think a house isn't worth that much get off your camping station (yes it doesnt' work any more). Its one of the hardest markets to be in and one where you need to know all other markets in sl.

Hey but if your giong to say that about houses cant' we say they about clothes there just textures and take a fraction of the time, gesture retailers, well all business to me you show your lack of sl experience and I would be surprised if you know how to make a make a basic prim or upload a texture. get the hands out of the dvd drive you cant' get in sl that way.

The doors as all of us reading this know its one line of code but you show your lack of building experience when he will have baught in his door scripts and they will be no mod. No mod to protect the scripter who he would have paid for the scripts and be chasing for a refund.

I aggree the house should never be on the market and the builder should be ashamed of himself. However idiots like yourself also need putting straight.

It may be worth reminding people that this thread is five years old.

I'm so glad that I missed the previous version. Now please repeat the process... several times.

I agree. Get a life, people. We don't need to bring a five-year old zombie thread to life again.

Who's more imbecilic, the alleged imbecile who made the original statement at a time when it was true, or the actual imbecile who takes it out of context FIVE YEARS LATER, to point out how it's no longer valid? Come on, ImSky, did it even once occur to you that perhaps things were a little different back when SL itself was barely out of beta?

Look, L$1000 is chump change now, of course. But five years ago, that amount was significantly harder to come by. If I recall, there wasn't even yet an exchange set up for buying and selling L$. 1000 represented either two full weeks' stipend, or a lot of work.

The past five years of inflation in SL have been roughly equivalent to about the past 100 years worth in RL. Today, anyone can very easily come with the measly four dollars it would take to buy 1000 lindens. But back then, very few people had that kind of cash on hand. Think about what $4 was worth in, say, 1900, when chicken cost 7 cents a pound instead of the $2-5 a pound we pay for it today, and when the average mortgage was just $90 a year instead of $900 a month. Do that, and you might get a sense for why just about everyone involved in this thread when it was new agreed that the house in question was indeed expensive.

Further, it's well worth noting that the culture of SL was totally different in those days. For the first 1-2 years of SL's existence, a HUGE portion of its population were content creators. Heck, for the first year, I think we were ALL content creators. Early adopters of any new platform tend to be. Back then, most of us hardly spent money on anything ever, since we'd just make whatever we needed. In the 4-5 years since then, everyone else has shown up, the percentage of dedicated content creators has become highly diluted (as it should be) and there's now a real market for the works that we create. End result, L$1000 has gone from expensive to very, very, very cheap.

You'd do well to adopt a little curiosity about, and respect for, history, ImSky. If you think a statement from five years ago sounds like it doesn't make sense today, ask about it, rather than attempt to refute it so far from the time it was written. Trying to argue any point five years, and several major economic and cultural shits, after the fact only makes you look a little silly, don't you think?

You're right, pal. I've got zero SL experience. I haven't been making my living off it these past years; I've just bee pretending. And my ~7500 posts on this forum, which include some of the very first threads ever to have been stickied as user guides, not to mention the published books on SL that I've tech-edited, and contributing authored, that wasn't really me. That was the 10,000 monkeys with 10,000 typewriters that I keep under my desk. They work for banannas, so it's a good deal for me.

It's unlikely that a library script would have been no-mod.

Again, who's the bigger idiot, the alleged idiot who said what was relevant at the time, or the actual idiot who can't be bothered to check the date before he quotes out of context? I'm sure glad I've got you to "put me straight", because all this time, I thought I knew what I was talking about.

But am I wrong for expecting a $1k house not to spam and doors not to pop up a dialogue box every time I click on them?
Hell no.
