Before you start on sculpties, you should understand the basics of Blender. There is a good video tutorial series called Blender Basics on http://blenderunderground.com - the first four of those will help you to understand how Blender works.
For sculpties, you'll want to install my scripts /8/60/203571/1.html as these make the whole sculptie workflow in Blender a lot simpler. There is a quick demo video /8/60/203571/9.html#post1905432 but unless you have the basics of Blender down it might be tricky to follow what's happening. |

Blender is very complex partly because it controls a very complex set of tasks (and partly because it is very strange). If you have no previous experience, you have to be patient, pick up skills from various web and SL tutorials as you go along, and try not to get frustrated.
However, at the same time, you can try other tools. There are some that a) are MUCH eazsier than blender, and b) don't do nearly as much or as well. The simplest scultpy tool I know of is PloppSL. You draw an object in 2D as if with children's crayons, and it inflates it as if it were a balloon into a sculpty. This is mostly suitable for things that are shaped like balloons, but it will give you some insight into what is going on, and you can finish the things you make in PloppSL with Blender. The next is SulptyPaint. For quickly roughing out objects such as might be made on a lathe, it is quite useful. And, again, you can move back and forth between it and Blender. Like I said, making good sculpties requires considerable time and energy if you are starting from scratch, without lots of previous computer graphics skills. So, spend some extra time trying to learn everything you can. Read all these posts about sculpties. Read the Wiki about sculpties. Search Youtube and google for tutorials. The knowledge is out there, you just have to figure out how to get it inside your head. _____________________

A good place to start is the sticky at the top of this Building Tips Forum page titled "Sculted Prim Tools & Tutorials"

I'll echo some of what Domino said. Forget about sculpties for the moment. Learn the program itself first. You don't want to start with something as unique and specific as sculpties, or you won't develop a proper understanding of what you're actually doing. Take a few weeks to do some more normal projects first, and learn the basics through those. Then, only after you feel you've got a comfortable mastery of the fundamentals, should you return to sculpties. This goes for whatever 3D modeling program you're using, whether it happens to be Blender or Maya or Max or whatever.
There's a lot to learn. Do it right. Don't rush it. Sculpties will still be there when you're ready. _____________________

And there are increasing numbers of people (myself included) who are selling full-perm sculpties cheap. For the hours it takes to learn Blender, buying sculpties might make a lot more sense.

I started with Natalia Zelmanov's tutorials (aka Sculpties for Blondes
)http://www.mermaiddiaries.com/2006/11/build.html (page down for the sculpted prim tutorials). It's VERY basic, but will jump start you on ROKURO and Wings3D. While hardly as powerful as Blender, you can make some basic sculpts with a good Saturday afternoon of practise. Frankly, with ROKURO, you can make elementary "lathed" shapes with less than an hour of study. Wings has more possibilities, and can make some fairly complex shapes. In the end, it depends on what you wish to do and how much time you wish to invest in study, of course. _____________________

There is a series of very basic tutorials for using blender to make sculpties available at:
www.in2orbit.net look on the bottom left section To anyone considering learning Blender I give two tips of advice -dont be put off by the apparent complication of the interface of Blender.. you will not use even 1/10th of these features to make your first sculpties. It is all very logical in the end. - and dont be afraid to click things, experiment, see what happens.. of course back up your work ![]() I also have some in world tutorials available follow my picks or sig.. -W _____________________
