My one fear is lag too, that's all. I have no problem with ideas, only when they start to hurt lag me

I agree that if an idea that is presented is not one that will work for one reason or another, it's important to let the thinker know that his/her idea would not be appropriate for SL. What I was concerned with is the way people treat others, in the sense that not everyone has the same background/history to know of all previous thoughts/ideas posted in the forums, hence it is a bit discouraging to hear people literally treat you like less of a person because your idea is one mentioned before. There's a tactful approach when "dealing" with people whose thoughts are not in sync with others, and sometimes I see in the forums that there are those who would rather reprimand a person for thought rather than treat the person with courtesy and explain one's viewpoint fully. We (everyone; the 'thinkers') may not be in-world when posting in here, but we remember the names of those who have helped, supported, and bashed one's opinions/ideas on here.
It's late and I'm tired so I'm not sure if I'm being clear. Is anyone in agreement/disagreement with what I'm saying?

From: someone I think with the, grant you delayed, new direct object->object communication Pheonix Linden mentioned, which I am sure will be much more functional and definately less lag-o-riphic, I don't see time invested being wisely invested in an soft coded network.
For text messages, no a network isn't such a hot idea. For data communications (like authentication, data storage / retreival, etc) then yes. Not so much the network as the protocol used by it. I have been fiddling around with this a bit myself. Perhaps I will even manage to keep my attention focused on it long enough to actually make it work. James, I like the idea. It sounds challenging, and I like massive projects. IM me if you think I can help.

Well, having more options to communicate is always good. Seems I won't use my IM function for days - and then all of a sudden I have three conversations going at once - and do I EVER get them mixed up, given half a chance. From: someone Originally posted by Darwin Appleby So, your setting up a worldwide network for something that most businesses don't need or have, and can easily be replaced by a sheet saying the names of people to IM? Re-reading your post didn't help me on that one.

Heh, we're back on this idea, again?
I thought of this sort of thing independently back in February, in the first few days I was in SL and exploring LSL. I thought it was a neat idea at the time but I couldn't be bothered to implement it.
Then, one evening a few months ago, Christopher Omega was working on this idea and wanted my help with his scripts. I went cross-eyed looking at it (sorry, Chris! But I know you're much better now) and decided to give it a shot on my own.
In about four hours, I cooked up a script for simple relay nodes. In a few more hours, I cooked up a system whereby an agent (a device on the network) can register with a specific relay node so that it receives messages for it only once. And after that was done, I tore it down and put most of it in my inventory. I had no use for it. (Some politicking happened in between, but I won't mention it.)
I've adapted pieces of it for my race track in Gray so that the track can keep track(!) of who is where and when. So the code is still alive and still relays chat messages, it's just no longer a relay for people talking.
As I discussed with Huns Valen one day, it is indeed a broadcast system. I think you'll be hard pressed to find someone dedicated enough to implement routing, though, since memory is tight and chat is an inherently broadcast means of communication.
I'm not in SL much any more these days -- real life has really been intrusive -- but experienced scripters are welcome to catch me online and ask me for a copy of the chat relay scripts. (The only reason you must be experienced in scripting is that I have no time to hand-hold someone while they try to figure out what my script does, and how to change it.)

Hey this seems like it would be a cool idea. The neat thing would be if the phone rang and you had to dig it out of your pocket or something. Then you could also make like call centers for the lindens so they could help us easier i guess. If you suceed i want to be the first one to buy a phone
