Greetings: I am wanting to place some nature sounds on my property. I know that I can get some "in world", but I found some nice ones in RL that I might want to use. I tried to find a sound tutorial or FAQ, but does anyone have any advice or pages they can link me to about using ambient sounds on one's land (i.e. is there a maximum size that the files can be and other considerations). Thanks kindly. Lucrezia PS: I found this: /54/cc/109285/1.htmlBut for some reason I thought you were allowed more than 10 seconds. Thoughts? Confirmation? Thanks.

Sounds files to be uploaded to SL must meet the following criteria: - Under 10 seconds in length
- PCM WAV format (.wav)
- 44.1 Khz sampling, 16-bt
- Stereo or mono
If your sound files don't conform to those specs, you'll need to convert them. There are many programs on the market to do this. I recommend Adobe Audition, but if you don't want to spend money, Audacity and GoldWave are pretty good freebies. If you want to go longer than 10 seconds, you have two options. One is to stream the sound in from the web, the same way you would with music or video. You'll need a web server on which to put the files, and then it's just a matter of tuning the land's audio steam to the URL. You may need something running on the server to make the files loop, but I'm not sure. The other option is to cut the sounds into <10 second clips, and use a scripted object to play the clips in order. This is how music devices used to be done in SL before we had streaming. I'm afraid I can't tell you precisely how to do it, as scripting's not my thing, but I know it can be done.

Thanks, Chosen. That's all a great help. I just really wanted to understand options and limitations. Thanks again!

If you go with the uploaded sound clips, do a search for "Sound Prims" - they're prims with free full-permission scripts that play sound. You can get them from my main store in my Freebies, from SLExchange.com, NCI, and probably a dozen other freebie places by now.
