Proposal for Cyber-Punk City

Intro
------
The city rises up out of the squalor of its slums and sewers to thrust pristine towers into the sky.

Purpose
--------
To create a high-rise city with the futuristic and cyberpunk elements. Influences are BladeRunner, 5th Element, Gibson's Neuromancer, and Stephenson's Snow Crash.

Team
-------
Bel Muse (leader)
BuhBuhCuh Fairchild
bUTTONpUSHER Jones
Ysg Leviathan
Casval Epoch
Orrey Stone
Catherine Omega
Wednesday Grimm

Group
-------
TC City Planners

Features
--------

CITY OF CONTRASTS - See slums at ground level, wealth and opulence of the city-view penthouses, and even danger in the below ground tunnels.

DRAMATIC CITYSCAPE - Tall buildings, futuristic architecture, multi-level streets and walkways will create interesting perspectives for SL citizens to enjoy from above and below.

EVENTS - Combat and clue-solving games designed around the cyberpunk theme will take players on adventures from dark sewers to sky-high penthouses. Socialize in high-class techno-clubs or slum at ground-level hangouts.

COMMERCE - Let our holographic ads tempt you to spend money on high-tech weapons and gadgets at our sky-mall, or find bargains in the squatters market!

Building Codes
---------
High-Rise Buildings will be from 10-15 stories
Low-Rise Buildings will be from 3-5 stories
Warehouses will be from 1-2 stories
Slumdwellings will be only 1 story
Exteriors should reflect the cyberpunk style

Challenges
---------

We are well aware that a project extensive vertical development presents a unique challenge. We believe that we can do this within the guidelines through careful planning, use of facades and texturing. We are very eager to show that Second Life can support projects of all sizes.

Visuals
---------
There is an attached image showing the layout of the city. We also have a 3D model available in Second Life at Stanford (113, 149). There is also a walk-thru prototype of the city's tunnels at Shipley (227, 245)

If you guys are still accepting people to work on this I'd like to join. I'm new, so I'm still trying to learn how everything works, but I'd like to help if I could. :)

This is the kind of project I've been looking to get into. If you need another person in the group I would be glad to help.

Edit: I don't post in forums much, but I read every other day atleast. And I look forward to working with everyone if you'll let me join. (Hi bel :))

I think becasue you already have a team set in place, and their are many people that would love to help out for this project (like myself), you should at least allow other users outside from the MAIN Team, to allow them to create their own Futuristic Objects that could be used in the Future City. Like simple objects, that could be placed around the city. Not big buildings, Hover Trains or big objects that could conflict the organisation of the plan that is in place. More like those Holographics AD Displayers, Street Light Fixtures (broken for slums areas, shinny and new in stockmarket commerical areas), Computer terminals, etc. The simple Misc items to add that eye candy value to the city... ummm candy. *ahem*

Their are a lot of great idea in SL, and they should all be looked at if this project goes underway. For your team, just make sure the more "Important" Objects, code, and oganization is done by yourselves.

Comments or Thoughts?

I think since the base team is already established, what might be a good idea for myself and other potentials who'd like to contribute, would be to set aside a piece of land of your own and begin working on ideas you might have for the project.

There are a few ideas to go with for this one, but like you I had thought about doing a little run down slum/ghetto. You could also maybe do a kind of subway station that was a bit run down. Some kind of black market weapons/drugs store or cybernetics lab perhaps. Etc, etc.

But yeah.. I think it's probably wise to actually lay something down first, get it looking nice, then maybe present that to the main team. That way it'd be easier for them to decide if what people were doing matched their vision, and if it could be used anywhere.

Those were just my thoughts right now. I think it's always better when you approach someone and are able to say "hey look, I built this already, maybe you could use some of it?" instead of stipulating without really having anything to back up what you say you can do.

Just like in real life.

Just like getting a job in the real world. Having degree printed on paper is not enough to get the job. You need to back up your stuff with a portifilo. (all depending what type of job also)

Hey maybe we can meet up in-game sometime. I'd be interested to check out anything you've built so far. You can see my place at the location in my sig... Not even anything cyber-ish... Just my current pad.

This is so great to have so much enthusiasm about this project. I hesitated to reply because the future of the project is still in question. But we do have plans to include people outside the initial team as we get underway.

Ya sure I am going to be in once it goes online. Currently I am working on that Lexus 2049 car that was seen in the "Minority Report".
I also plan on creating a holographic display Template. Yes a Template. Something where anyone can change the texture of the display (manually or by code from a list) and it will automatically make it trans, flicker, turn on brighter when it comes near night time in SL, and reduce the brightness when in day.

Totally down with this proposal Bel. I'd be happy to build slums, in particular I've been meaning to construct a Free Clinic and a sci-fi opertating room so... well this will work out jim dandy.

Additionally I'd think it'd be kind of interesting if we had a sort of floating slums area. Like "The Raft" from Snow Crash, lots of wild houses "floating" out over a water district, connected by ricket gangplanks and so forth.

Ok, here's the deal.

The cybercity project is being done within strict guidelines imposed by the Lindens. 2000 primitive and 50 scripts. So we are working with a small team of 8 on this phase of the building.

We are willing to discuss ideas and get to know people in consideration of future involvement, but at this time we are not looking to expand the team.

Every member has only 250 primitives and about 6 scripts to work with. It's a real challenge. If we bring more people in, everyone would have even less to work with.

I am really glad that there is so much interest in this project. Please know that we are very impressed with the ideas and abilities of the people who have posted in this thread or spoken with us in-world. But for now, we have to work within the project guidelines we were given.

The limitations suck, but are understandable considering the lindens are letting you build it in the new zonez and they are funding the project (right?!?!?). i mean, if they aren't funding it, then you guys should go all out and make the biggest lag hole on the server with 500 scripts and 1k textures per building ;)

these arent funded. And there's really no fun in making a lag hole. Then no one will come and visit the wonder you created.

well, I would come visit it no matter how laggie (because it wouldnt BE laggie with my setup), but I know the average user's worst fear in the world is lag and they will throw their computer over a cliff if they experiance any because they dont have any patience so I guess a lag hole isnt the most inviting thing, but 50 scripts is just a bit too limited for an entire city (do u meen 50 max scripts, or just 50 different kinds?)

im used to lag i had to deal with a 233 for 4 years that could barly run star craft.....so it wouldnt really bother me if it were a lag hole i can handle it.

But Starcraft's minimum specs were a P90 with 16mb of RAM...

a 233 couldn't run it?
