Making truly tiny objects

I've been on SL since early 2005 and I consider myself a fairly good builder and texturer (Is that word?) on SL, but I've never known how to make objects really thin. I'm in the final stages of finishing an avatar...but when making glasses for it, the lenses width is too fat, but I can't seem to shrink it further. I've heard that you can shrink something to any size in local viewing, but that doesn't seem to work either. I've seen people with jewelery and other objects that are really small, but I can't seem to attain this size, any advice?

There are some great tips in this thread about making very thin cylinders and other Very Small Prims.

One common trick is to take a box or cylinder, change the prim type to sphere, use dimple on the sphere and then change the prim type back to cylinder. So e.g. if you dimple half of the sphere the cylinder will only be half a tall as before. The center of rotation/prim stays in its original place - this is also the trick to make doors, wings etc.

It's all about prim torture. Try this. Start with a sphere, dimple it on both ends to B .49, E.51, and then convert it to a cylinder. After conversion, it will still be dimpled, and the cylinder will be .02 times the thickness shown in the Z size field. Set the Z size to the minimum (.01), and your clinder will have an actual thickness of .0002M. That's pretty much paper-thin.
