Local lighting - mystery light? sun?

hi all,

Im getting some really bright directional light in 1.7 when in local light mode from some mystery source.
Im afraid it might just be the way the sun/moon/global light is naturally interacting, but its changing the colors of the walls and everything rather drastically...

(see the pics...)

or maybe theres an invisible light object somewhere?
is there a way to turn off or change all light objects to wood or something on my land?

thanks!

Local lighting seems to be working very oddly for me, and inconsistently so far. I put some lights on top of a bunch of prims—a prim floor—and some of the tiles glowed and some didn't. Was like a weird checkerboard. Relogged and different tiles were glowing. I don't recall experiencing this under 1.6/x or earlier versions of the 1.7 Preview.

look at this comparison....is local lighting SUPPOSED to do that in 1.7? or 1.6? from the sun or something? its just washing everything out thats facing east...

Im pretty positive I dont have any light-type objects on my land...is there a way to check for sure though?

A nighttime script?

Octal, are there any off-day / on-night lighting scripts embedded in any of your prims?

llSetPrimitiveParams([PRIM_MATERIAL, PRIM_MATERIAL_LIGHT]);

The material type would still show as something other than light.

Try -Control Alt T- to see any invisable prim, also check and make sure there are none left by anyone you dont know. If there truly is a hidden light prim you will most likely find it this way.

If there, isnt (I suspect there isnt) I would continue to ask questions, as this seems very strange for the sunset height shown in your pics. Hopefully this is something they will tweek in the following updates.

how do I search for such occurances?

also, is it possible im getting light from a neighbors' light object? can local light be thrown across landlines?

thanks

Sure can, if it's bright enough. But I'd like to add another question about local lighting...if a prim started out as light, then is changed to "plastic" and is a flourescent green...why, even at night does everything glow green around it?

Neighbor?
10-26-2005 19:47
Looking at the whole house pic I am wondering if your neighbor has some big lit up prims? The light is clearly stronger on one side of the house than the other, and the outside wall of the house on the pic's right is the brightest - the side that faces the neighbor.

I thought about that but I dont remember this happening before 1.7....

Heres a before-and-after local lighting pic from 1.6 to 1.7...basically the same setup, no new light objects, etc

yeah I went and explored and they do indeed have a boatload of BIG light prims. So I sent a nice message asking if they could change them to Plastic/Fulbright...they are pretty cool so we will see what happens.

I dont suppose there is any way to block local light from your neighbors?

The only way I know of is to inspect the Contents of each prim/child prim for scripts. Maybe other programmers have a more efficient way.

Sorry, don't know about the neighboring light question.

Good luck!

Unfortunately, no. I really wish we could though, as I'm sure do most land owners. SL's lighting system is really pretty bad. Light is not blocked by objects at all, only by distance.

how about darkness?
10-27-2005 14:22
Sorry for the tangent, but are there any new ways to invoke indoor darkness in 1.7?

Besides the usual baking dark textures in Photoshop and whatnot. (We're trying to build some perma-dark spaces for the spooky corners of several monestary and temple sites.)

Local light kills my framerate, so I have been turning it off. This is new to 1.7. :(

yeah making areas truely dark or light in opposition of the "time of day" in game would be so nice. I don't like turning on local lighting, frames aren't acceptable in certain situations with variables like gun fire etc to add to ll being on (even on a dual 7800). Yet in other higher end games (even non optimized demo copies of next gen pc games) with settings on all highest, I have no probs.
