A friend of mine recently got a SL aquarium. Inside were some tubes with a fish texture and a lot of transparency. The tubes rotate and it sort of makes the fish swim - but really it looks like transparent tubes with a fish texture. So I thought - I can do better ;).
But really, I did not like fish in the first place, so I thought I would make a butterfly instead, one that would flap around in front of my favorite swing so I could enjoy them in the sunset.

In SL one can put one texture on one side of a prim and an other on the other side. Cool. But one of them can be transparent. It is used a lot in skybox walls. Interesting. So I played around and made a very big build which is somewhat hidden from the outside - but completely transparent from the inside. Kind of funny.

Or sky-platforms - In SL they just hang there. Some put some decorative rocket things under to "keep it up". I had just found the "mega prims", and made a giant hot-air ballon to keep it up.

I also spend way too many hours on trying to build mechanical things with levers and gears. SL is not really suited for that, though somethings can be made to work.

So, I gave up on a windmill that would face into the wind. I gave up on my water mill, as I could not make running water with mass. (I could make it run on temp balls - the ones made of flesh were supposed to bounce the least - so I had a laugh as the mill ran on meat balls).

When I get rich I want my own sim so I can build this:

I am an OK scripter, build normal stuff, can make a texture, but do not draw them up myself (e.g. I can steal textures of google images search). I do not do animations nor any fancy sculpties. You basic skills are an important factor in what ideas you get I feel.

Necessity being the mother of invention is a truism.

Boreal, if you go to http://openlifegrid.com/Support/Downloads/tabid/67/Default.aspx[url]you can download a standalone region that runs on your computer. It's a bit tricky to get it working and there are some quirks (the sun doesn't move, there's no wind and your av's appearance doesn't persist from login to login, to name a few), but it's free and you can terraform and build to your heart's content - as many regions as you want.

The challenge is that you have nothing other than a few very basic resources, and no place to buy anything, so you have to create everything yourself. You get the 65,000+ sqm of space and 45,000 prims to work with and the OpenLife viewer lets you make whatever megaprims you need.

Because you're not connected to a grid, you are all by yourself - no interruptions, no griefers. Later on - when you get rich ;-) - you can connect your region to a live grid if you want.

I'm working on building a region inspired by Tuscany, with old, old buildings and an upscale modern resort. What I've had to learn in the process has been well worth the hassle of getting the thing running.

I'll get an idea of something I'd like to build or make then randomly flip through books with lots of pictures to find things that look similar, and then jot down a quick sketch of how to replicate the item with prims. I find that while I'm looking for things in books, I come up with other ideas that I follow up on as well. Lately though, I've gotten a lot of ideas while driving. I wait to jot those down, of course.
