Has anyone noticed that it doesn't appear to be functioning in the preview? This can ruin many a project

The invisibility trick relies on a bug. 1.9 fixes that, but doesn't provide for a proper way to handle it. LL hates prim shoes and Tinies. Presumably.

I was under the impression that the public Invisiblity Prim that keeps getting passed around used special system only textures to allow them to function. I'll have to wait until I log back in tomorrow, but I remember reading that in a note along with the prim.

Ah, there LL goes again, breaking really useful hacks for no apparent reason without introducing suitable alternatives...

Ah, there LL goes again, breaking really useful hacks for no apparent reason without introducing suitable alternatives... Useful as it is, the invisi-prim was clearly not an intended feature. It's likely that a fix or improvment to whatever code it relied on caused it to stopworking. I'm going to side with Linden Labs on this one, because personally I prefer better rendering performance to high heeled shoes. |

oh well.
There goes my next project before I even get a chance to get started on it for real. No chance they are going to provide a means to switch off rendering of body parts then to make up for it? weeps into cup of tea. _____________________

The invisibility prim has far more uses then just avatars. I would love to be able to use transparencies in a skin or something, but removing this "feature" will destroy some really cool builds. In example some of the stuff Starax has made make quite a lot of use of the invisibility prim.

I'm going to side with Linden Labs on this one, because personally I prefer better rendering performance to high heeled shoes. Except in this case, performance is worsened (more polygons to draw) ![]() _____________________

I'm going to side with Linden Labs on this one, because personally I prefer better rendering performance to high heeled shoes. I agree that it was not an intended feature, but it is unfortunate that Linden Lab let it go for so long. It's been widely known and used for at least a year and a half. See this post from Oct 2004. I know of two other bugs like this and the Linden Lab response is inconsistent. One is the SitTarget bug which makes teleporters possible. Linden Lab argued consistently that this was a bug that they were going to fix. They talked firmly about certain dates that it would be removed. But in the end, they did a 180 and abruptly put in Point-to-Point TP. And although we have P2P, we still don't have an official LSL function for it and SitTarget is still the only scripted way to do it. The other example is the Phantom Avatar bug which allowed avatars to move through solid objects. This was widely discussed and had many practical uses. In this case, the Lindens responded quickly and fixed it before it became mainstream. It's an interesting thing to consider, this bug/feature debate. Many bugs would make interesting features. And there are lots of features that are just plain buggy. ![]() _____________________

In the prieview grid a few minutes ago Vektor Linden messaged about Invisiprims being "broken". One normally doesn't list a fix as broken so lets hope that means its being worked on.

They better just be 'broken'.....
If Invisaprims are indeed gone and there is no workaround, that means 90% of my avatars are 'broken'.... and it'll be time to migrate permanently back to WoW. ![]() _____________________

I'm absolutely certain that this was not intentional. LL would be completely out of their mind to remove something so innocuous and ubiquitous without implementing a viable replacement, even if it's not an "official" feature.

This "hack" was not intentionally broken and should work again the next time preview is updated.

Glad we received prompt Linden response to this. Though personally I find the invisiprim "hack" to be highly strange, it is the only way to make grossly non-humanoid avatars at this point in SL and therefore would have been upset to see it go.
Of course, we could use transparency with avatar skins... ^_^ |
