It's not so much that as the narrow scope of American thinking at times. Who's next on the list to invade? WOW! Kind of racist??????? SOrry if you are having a bad night but should we say something about Canadians or what about jumping on blacks or asians? Maybe we can start up a discussion on religion? NOT!!!!! This is Scripting Tips NOT the General Forum. >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>end of thread derailment<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<< Back to discussion on topic

Whata we gonna do, bomb them with maple syrup? Or paralyse them with government funding :} >> This is Scripting Tips NOT the General Forum. Agreed, and as an scripter, I say SL needs to allow accented characters in prim names and descriptions.

Agreed, and as an scripter, I say SL needs to allow accented characters in prim names and descriptions. You could always go code it for them or buy the hardware for all the increased storage space they'd need.

I kinda disagree on the é's or maybe ö's in descriptions. For the same reason, I don't like the fact, that they were added to URLs now. I can type www.schönenöiewölt.de but imagine someone who doesn't have these characters on her/his keyboard - they'll hardly ever get to this URL. Even myself, when I'm in a foreign country, I'd have a hard time to type this... Now imagine, someone with a keyboard that lacks these characters buys an object with é's and ö's and tries to make a search for it in her/his inventory... let's say, it's an object called séance - how big is the chance, that' you'll have to browse through your whole inventory (or at least, every object that starts with an «s» - which might be quite a few)... Usually, I don't even use Umlauts for documents on my own computer because when I mail them to another person who doesn't have a Mac, they'll get some whacky document-names which are pretty unreadable...

If I type "typwriter" without an "e" in it, it's a spelling mistake. If I type "ecoute" in French without "é" in front, it's a spelling mistake. Guys, it's basic. Really. Totally. Honestly. but anyway, never mind. The Chinese multiverse will sweep us and all this away soon :}

It's actually a pain in the butt to make everything work properly with Unicode sometimes.

well it's good to see americans don't have a monopoly on victim mentality.
I find it amzing how anyone can turn something as simple as a memory block size limit int an issue of linguistic prejudiced, never mind spin that into other topics like china taking over the virtual worlds market (the country that filters 2/3 of the internet... seriously? lmao)
you had a bad day, ll broke a behavior that you relied on... happens to lots of people. but making irrational accusations isn't going to get it back... it likely nothing will...
now you could submit a feature request, or cite examples where the 'new' behavior breaks content, and try to get them to up the limits, but they'll never be anywhere near the old ones, and making outrageous claims isn't going to help your position, and is likely to get you ignored in short order.
the sky has not fallen, the end is not nigh, take a chill pill, and work towards something, whether that being coding the old behavior out of your scripts, repairing it to work within the new limits, or campaigning to get it changed.

Probably because they were all to busy playing their equivalent of SL and thought the End of the World was just another scripting error on the part of the development team

Hmm, then name is limited to 63 characters (a power of 2 minus 1) and the description is limited to 127 characters (a power of 2 minus 1). Both computing numbers, but I guess that is just a coincidence.

the minus one is a stop byte to prevent overflows during reading of strings. it's a data saftey measure, and a requirement for a great many programming environments.
they COULD use 128 and no stopbyte, but then they'd have to forcibly stop after reading 128 if one wasn't encountered, while it's quicker just to have it there, and just read the string till they hit a stop byte (which might come earlier for shorter strings).
point in fact, this is why the hack worked, because data input through lsl wasn't being checked and truncated, so a stop byte wasn't encountered on a read.
