What else is meaning but description of being and interacting?
rather my point, you can't have meaning without action by it, or upon it. so back to the root of this sideline, and to model it in mathematical tems, each consideration added together, with all their various values, equals the result (action upon those considerations). the equation cannot be greater than it's result.

Not really; algorithms don't change depending on what literal translation is done on them.

*possibly not, but code does.

*possibly because that all depends on too many factors like representation, system or context, etc... which is way too amorphous and esoteric to dig into.

I'd like to thank you both for existing as perfect stereotypes of the 2 competing philosophical sides of the current state of programming hehe :) In my subjective opinion, both of you are correct... though I fall on Talarus' side of the philosophical debate and do not espouse the use of implicit behavior. But continuing this debate is fairly pointless as both of you are firmly entrenched in a deeply philosophical position and will not sway each other no matter what is said :) It's cool for the layman to read and as a professional I enjoy reading it but it is basically mentally masturbating at this point... and.... I've gone too far. I need an internal editor...

See, I relied on the implicit behavior of my brain and it let me compile a faux pas.

heh you called it as you saw it... I don't see that as a faux pas on your part, but then as a geek I tend not to recognize some of those social conventions =)

and you're right, the sidelines especially have become way too esoteric... but I think we've almost wound down.

Yeah, I think we've explored it as far as we can (or have time for) in this venue.

For those wanting to delve any farther, I heartily recommend:

The Art of Computer Programming
by Donald E. Knuth

The Pragmatic Programmer: From Journeyman to Master
by Andrew Hunt and David Thomas

Design Patterns: Elements of Reusable Object-Oriented Software
by Erich Gamma

The Mythical Man-Month: Essays on Software Engineering
by Frederick P. Brooks

Refactoring: Improving the Design of Existing Code
by Martin Fowler

I'm sure Void can suggest a bunch more, but those can get you started, if you're really interested in "what's under the hood?"-type thinking.

Knuth puts out good stuff... any of his "selected papers on..." as well as his discrete and concrete mathematics books... and surreal numbers for a more relaxed but still technical read... it's a rough speculative biography of some of Conway's work.

the one by Fowler looks rather interesting to me. I'll have to see if it's available here, or I may pick it up.

I'm afraid I don't have many suggestions to add, as most of my library is still in another state stored with a friend... what's left is mostly basic documentation. but there was one about C++ compiler design that really got me looking at what efficiencies could be built in, and how some of them could go wrong... I'll try to get a title...
