This has been bothering me for awhile. I really do not want to be logged into the forums here around the time that LL pulls the plug. And I definitely do not want to see the thrown out with the afterbirth creation that they call the new forums. I "grew up" here in Scripting Tips. I went from noob (may your life be blessed Newgate Ludd for helping me and so many others) to scripter, to writing code as part of my job description at work now.

I guess I am gonna take a stroll across the street now as I do not want to watch this place be archived and mothballed. I am not leaving SL and will probably peek in here some. Anyone notices that one of the alternatives is getting a lot of noobs asking questions, let me know.

Love everyone.

You were here and helped me when I started scripting and didn't know the first thing about LSL:)
Yes it has been a good time. I guess everything must die. Where will new newbies turn to in the future?

I shall miss you Jesse. Thank you for all the help you've given me, both in direct response to my posts and through my reading of others.

a] You will be sorely missed, Jesse, but it would be so much better all round if you could hang in: the active presence of residents on these forums is an endorsement of their usefulness.

b] Has a date been set for closing the forums? If it is inevitable, I still think it would be much better if we could miss one another at the same time.

I know what you mean.

Although I already had a background in programming I learnt more about scripting by posting in the Scripting Tips forum then I ever would have by just being left to my own devices. Trying to help others really can be the best way to test your own understanding of how things work. I also remember Mr Ludd. He was always better then me at answering questions but I think I gave him a run for his money at least a couple of times. :)

Why Linden Lab 'don't get it', I really don't understand. May be it's the inevitable consequence of becoming too big and inward looking. Providing an easy to use, and intuitive forum, where people can help each other doesn't, to me, seem such a burdensome thing.

Their Jive based, Group-ware software, is just so obviously not the tool for the job. Then again, Linden Lab has been disconnected from these forums for a very long time. Perhaps they just feel safer in their new Corporate Garden.

They're going to close these forums? This is terrible news! I thought it was only the ones at xstreet. Scripting tips is the one I use most. I've learned so much just by searching in here.

I shall miss you very much, Jesse. You have been such a huge help, and it's largely because of your assistance, encouragement and examples that I've discovered scripting, have become reasonably competent at it, and am having great fun so doing. Thank you, and I hope you'll still be around in other, independent, fora.

Closing forums? What are your sources? I only remember long ago that there used to be a category of linden-residents discussions which had been pulled, which caused big problem due to moral panic, confusion and false rumours about it being the entire forums that would be pulled, despite only being linden involvement that was being pulled.

The plan is to freeze these forums, for reference, and to open new ones on the blog, which a lot of folks find pretty unusable.

Yea, where is Newgate now? i've not seen him for ages. My very first question was asked here after a month born in SL and was answered by his tremendous help!

I think it's true that this whole SL forums (powered by vBulletin) would be closed. Since they have this new blog semi-forum like from the dashboard, they're trying to move and match everything under the same curtain. Just wish there would also be some sections especially for scripting discussions. More than 99% of the time i'll just do LSL, it'd be a total sad face if no more scripting to talk, like this => :(

What a loss. I contribute heavily to the forums because I learn so much from people's questions. They force me to wonder how to do things better, from dressmaking to architectural construction to scripting. Even better, I get to have my own questions resolved (and my answers improved) by wiser heads. There's no way that I could have learned as much as I have without having the forums around. I really hate the new Dashboard/blog system. I find it soulless and hard to navigate (I can't find the LSL Portal from it without a five step backdoor search, for example).

Now, on top of everything else, I lose Jesse too! Waaaaahh! I was slow to find my way into the Scripting Tips forum, but when I did, Jesse was one of the first to welcome me and answer my naive questions. As the forums evaporate I'm going to miss a LOT of friends that I have never met in person. Jesse's right there in group #1.

Some of this "closing the forums" stuff may just be resident hysteria still, I'm hoping so anyway, haven't bothered going to the new blog forums myself, and whill just hang here till the end I guess, sorry to see you go as I'm sure you have adided me on quite a few occassions.

As an occasional visitor here and an xstreet forum regular, I can assure you that there is no hysteria. The xstreet forums were locked and all activity moved to the new "blogorums" about 10 days ago. As far as I, and many others are concerned, it is an unmitigated disaster. This may actually bode well for these forums, as hopefully LL will take some of the feedback they have received to heart, and realise that the Jive software is not suitable for running a forum.

Nope. LL has said several times that they they are going to make this place read-only in favor of the new stuff. I don't think it's immanent, though - even LL seems to understand that the new stuff is still a step backwards compared to here.

Jesse, if LL hasn't beated all the life out of you yet, take a peek at the new stuff every now & then. I plan to give them crap about it until they get it right, as long as I'm in SL. Maybe, eventually, they will get it right and it will turn into something that doesn't suck.

Be well. :)

Well I look at it like this.

When LL bought XStreet, they wanted to make it "really theirs". As part of their overall site makeover, they wanted to "fully integrate" the Xstreet community into the Secondlife.com community. They could very easily have told people to come to the main forums. They could easily have made a couple of new subforums.. they chose, instead, to put them on their blog software.

If LL doesn't want to maintain 2 communities.. why move only Xstreet to the blogs, and leave us here? Why pay employees to deal with shutting down the old SLX forum and all the drama that includes, and build it a whole new separate pool?

LL used the XStreet Forums as a guinea pig. They have a much smaller userbase.

Move the Xstreet forums over there, and get some of the bitching over with. The people who will leave, will mostly leave then. Meanwhile, the people who stay can give them feedback, and usage statistics, with which they can try and improve the functionality.

Once they have that system working, they can take a deep breath and then move these forums over there too.

It sucks.. but it's hardly "hysteria" to be able to see this pattern from the inside.

These forums haven't been updated in years. They've hired, and fired, people whose job it allegedly was to fix this thing. They've made multiple attempts at "we care about you, and want to make this better, what can we do?" and those attempts have withered and died from lack of watering.

like it or not, the new "Discussion" module for the SL blog *DOES* function, and it does seem that, at least for the moment, they are able to keep it updated. BUt it underscores again the fact that the Lindens never intended to manage a Social Networking Virtual World.. they wanted to make and sell virtual collaboration software. They just don't "get" us, what we want, or what we need.

For the record, Jesse (who is a she, not a he)... where are you goin to?

SLU with you, I have been a member there for a while, just never post any. Argent has set up an account there now and I guess Talarus will at some point, if he hasn't already. Next generation scripting questions guru, EF Klaar has been working in both forums.

(Sindy)As I mentioned, I will also be keeping an eye out on where ever noobs migrate to. I am not beat down, just disgusted. Tthe XStreet marketplace website design just kind of pushed me over the edge finally. I just spent 2 weeks generating 3000 lines of php script for our company website and XStreet really blows my mind. That site, as in expiring your cookie after every visit and being set up for the minority wide screen monitor, demonstrates criminal stupidity.

Little by little LL has been pushing all the wrong buttons for me and now I find the last place that works well will be removed and that just may be the last button that they push.

These forums will be very missed by me.

Maybe it is time I use Google and find a new "Second Life" alternative.

Winter has it right.
Yes, the new blog-system sucks and, yes, those of us that came to it from Xstreet are the guinea-pigs (I've said exactly that myself). Be somewhat reassured though - the Lindens are noting and responding to what is said there. The "OMG This Sucks" posts have all but died as people have started to say WHY and HOW it could be better.
These, proper SL, forums will be migrating. The Lindens really don't want you all to hate it :-( They are trying to make it something you'll like.
Why not go there and add some constructive criticism (another 'OMG' will not help) because we all know that what LL has said will happen will not be stopped by us - at least we have this chance to steer it a little

Lols; I'm not sure I like the sound of that.

The level of scripting traffic on the other forums is very low compared to here, so far. SLU seems the busiest, followed by slapt.me; Second Citizen is very quiet, and Forum Cartel even more so. There's some cross-posting, understandably.

I'd say it's way too early to choose any one forum as an alternative to here, and I suspect that when these forums do close a lot of people will spread their time between several of the others. I plan to keep on checking them all for some time to come.

(Also...) I forgot to mention the flog; I have looked in there, but several aspects of it make it unattractive to me. Nevertheless I'll keep an eye on it for a while too - it can only improve :)

Grr, well I'll be logging into SLU I suppose, Jesse. I guess i must be dim. Just don't understand why Linden's constantly screw with creators by messing up the things that actually are helpful, and devoting their energy and resources to stupidity like the adult ghetto. I'd be lost without folk like you and Void and the many other folk here, so it's a real blow to many besides myself I'm sure.

It's so frustrating when Lindens seems to work against the people who help make them a successful environment.
