"The new media on a parcel feature allows landowners to select and display a wide range of Web-based media content, including Web pages, movies, images, text documents and audio. This change replaces and expands the existing QuickTime parcel media feature, giving you more flexibility in your media presentations."

And as usual, nobody knows a damn thing about it, nobody had any forewarning, and it may or may not work in any way that you care to mention.

LOL. Hey I didn't say it made sense :D

I am sure we will find a use for it and will be happy to have it. Sure we will also discover a few security problems. The non-sensical part is that LL has the infamous "really, really long list of scary items", yet seems to have taken a "be divided and be conquered" approach.

Havok 4 still being worked on, Windlight, still not perfected, MONO really still just starting.............. And forum upgrade still at bottom of list. :(

And this...I was hoping for some kind of HTML rendering cached as a temporary texture, rather than parcel-limited media. Huh. More functionality that is unavailable to Linux users, I guess. And just limited enough for others to probably not be very useful. Fun fun. Boy, I HOPE this isn't the long vaunted HTML on a prim feature.

looking forward to an LSL command that will let us change the url.

ALso still waiting for HTML on a PRIM.. rather than "HTML on a Parcel Media Feed". Being able to pull down dynamic html pages may well replace the "XYText message reader boards.." at your local club (and save 254 prims.. YAY)... but until we can pull down such data on a HUD, or other "mobile" stuff for the landless.. this technology will have limited applications at best.

Oh, I don't know. It wouldn't be the first time LL has misled people about a new feature, touting it as really hot s*** and then leaving us jaw-hanging and unsatisfied when it is delivered. You could well be right. This might be all they have meant this whole time.

Even once they make this interactive instead of display-only, it would suck quite fabulously if limited to parcel media.

i think its great ?, we are half way there ?

*i dont think SL will ever allow URL's for texturizing, due to the data-load?

I designed my web site with the HTML on a Prim feature in mind well over a year ago. While this is a small step in the right direction (already found some bugs testing it), I have to agree that limiting it to parcel media will make it pretty much useless for serious applications. Might as well make the profile window resizable. That would be far less work, I would think.

well EVENTUALLY they will be FORCED to do this.. centralized hosting... simply won't scale forever.

This sounded great until I read «media-texture»... This is NOT what I was waiting for...
I'd be happy if I could display images pulled from the web on a prim...
Or apply a text as a texture (thus making XYText obsolete)...

Just halfbaked...

Afaik, you have _always_ been able to display a web page on a prim by using some trickery with the Media URL, because basically SL just calls QuickTime and QuickTime can render HTML under the correct circumstances..

But yes, this isn't the HTML-on-a-prim we hoped for, which amongst other things, would have included interactivity..

and if we use it to show data from a LL server, such as a user profile image? is it a violation of TOS, but if we display the same image from say face Book it is OK?

It opens up both technical and intelectual challanges that they have not properly addressed in world.
But I agree, I was excited till I tried it out, so far it is not what we hoped for, but it is a step in the correct direction.

lol Very I raised the same question in Debbie's profile pic displayer thread... perhaps they just don't care about content that isn't under their control? nah, that sounds harsh doesn't it? =P

No, not Harsh, more a matter of selective morals on LL part.

it's very tempting to use this functionality to duplicate the action of Debbie's script and see how they react to it... after all, by their own hand they allow people to block profile pages, so one assumes it's allowed use... and you wouldn't have the uuid of the texture, just a picture publicly available on a website >=)

o: This has interesting applications for streaming video from webcams that support online interfaces.

@Void: go for it.

hehehh...yes very tempting. Coincidently, not 30mins ago I was having a conversation in-world with an Installation Artist who is working on a combining the (so-called) 'HTML on a prim', the profile projector script and mega-prims.

I told him he was anachist and a troublemaker!

So far he has been a little disappointed in the quality and tells me that any attempt to "flash" the HTML onto the prim quicker then two seconds results in a hard crash. I don't really think this is too surprising tho'...
