Funny how saying things out loud can generate better ideas. Socrates was right! Here is Bilbo's bedroom with a sculpty ceiling and sculpty beams. I'm going to add sconces to the intersections of the beams once I figure out how. Nothing like a passion project for learning!

Frodo's room and a Noob Alert! I totally forgot that prims aren't hollow, so these gorgeous arching beams are like walls. I was so confused at first-- why can't I walk across the room? Derrr... So I raised the beams. Next step is to go back and fix the beams in Bilbo's room. Live, build, and learn!

Just a thought.. (Looks fantastic by the way... amazing work!) You can make any particular prim Phantom... and anyone can walk right through it.. never knowing it's there... In the aplication of the prims you are using... might work just fine. Just a thought - Beams and such won't matter much since they aren't a 'shell' structure of the building... That's the way I've done things in the past.. BUT, that is just me, just throwing an idea out there, you are obviously doing great! Take care! Haplo (Seriously... WOW!)

Appreciated! I have so much to learn. I have everything rezzed on the new island-- 670 prims, with one hallway, a bathroom, and a storage room to build. Then it's covering the place in sculpties, a bit of landscaping, and it will be ready for visits!

Are you going to get Bilbo to live in it rent free as a final seal to the build? It's a labour of love that you are doing and an amazing project.. anyone to do a LoTR series movie there?

Bag End is now all in one place on its own tropical island. I've named it Valinor, of course! A bit of assembly work to do, but I'm in general pleased at how well the parts match, considering they were built separately. Probably won't get much done over the next couple of days. I'm preparing to return to the mainland for a couple of months and I have to get the house ready for my absence! But here is a picture of Bag End, together at last on Valinor.

Phew! From the unpacking yesterday, I built the required connections and new rooms (bathroom, storage, treasure room, and escape tunnel) and terraformed. If I never see another sculpty prim in my life it will be fine with me! Pics are the build without the cover of prims and after. 800 prims used, 1,000+ left to go on my little island of Valinor.

Tour time!
I'm off to a conference this weekend, so I've managed only the briefest of landscaping efforts at Bag End. But I have left all the doors open and it is available for anyone wanting to look through it. Needless to say, it's a cramped-quarters environment, so:
1. Taller avies will not navigate Bag End. I made it through just fine at one point when I was 6' 3", but seven-footers are out of luck. Tiny avies will have a fine time.
2. Mouselook is recommended!!! Yes, it can seem awkward, but it will give you the best views.
I do not know if the doors will react to other people. If they do, there are three secret doors in Bag End. If not, or if you're just curious about the build, you can swing your camera through the walls and check out the scene under the hill.
Rooms:
The entry, of course, with Frodo's room to the right as you go in. To the left is a hallway leading to the living room and the kitchen beyond that. Out the back door of the kitchen is a bathroom across the hall, Bilbo's study down the hall on the left, and Bilbo's room at the end of the hall. I still have 978 prims for furniture and landscaping! Go, me!
I can recommend a picnic on the hill (watch for phantom prims on the far edge) or down in the square under the trees.
I did have one incident of a failed prim in the kitchen floor, and I fell through. If this happens, or if you want to walk around under the hill, I have made one of the ground-level prims on the east side of the hill a phantom prim.
Enjoy,
R

From: Rusalka Writer Yes, someone had to build it. I only have the entry done thus far. 206 prims! I'm going to be land shopping to finish this in one piece. I'm building it on my tropical 8K, hence the odd backgrounds. The green door alone has 35 prims. There is also a secret door in the back that leads to Bilbo's treasure. That's in the last pic. You'll also notice the roots of the giant oak tree on the hill growing down through the back wall. Tomorrow I'll have to pack up the entry to free prim space to work on the living room. I'm using a mutant combo of Tolkein's maps and the movie. Sorry, JRT, I just can't build a bedroom without a window. My ultimate plans are either to sell copies or to set it up in an area along with a Bywater market square and Green Dragon pub and rented stalls. Heck, if I can get the prim count I might do all of Hobbiton. Insane, yes, but the happy kind, Yours, R It looks really good hunny! BTW, have you seen the one over at Ethereal Teal?

Amazing! Beautiful! a little big, maybe, but that makes it more comfy for us non-hobbit types I read the whole series 4 times over 35 years -- the last time, aloud, to my dyslexic son. Matches my mental images, as well as my dimmer recollection of the movies. Where is it; can we visit?

Visits are welcome! Directions are in my post above. Enjoy! And I have visited the Bag End on Ethereal Teal. I must say it would fit on the average plot of land rather better than mine! And I am reminded that I need fires in my fireplaces and chimneys...

WOW astounding! Been lurking in this thread in admiration from the beginning. Will definitely try and see it later on. Always amazed to see what fantastic things people come up with and create.

IM me or reply here if you'd like some help with fire. I have some good copy/mod/xfer freebie logs & fire with glow and click on/off (and if you'd like different behavior I can mod my scripts). Also, if you'd like some instruments like lutes, I make instruments and if we can find any good textures I'll be happy to make some for you.

Here's another cool thing. Do a small (Begin=.950, End=1.000) profile cut on a cylinder and give it a slight twist, and texture the interior with some wood texture and the exterior with bark and a log end texture (IM me if you want mine). I've also found that instead of a flat pane for the fire animation, a hollow rectangle gives the fire more "depth". I certainly agree about the glow, its a real enhancement for the fire. Don't be afraid to get your hands dirty playing with the values in the script.

RL has been interfering terribly with SL! But I just delivered a final edit of a novel to my editor, and had enough time to get back to Bag End and build fires, an ugly sofa in the living room, and Bilbo's desk in his study. Pic attached!

Bag End Goes Commercial!
Well, a little. As you can see in the pic, I've set up some market stalls in the square beside Bag End. I've been making beverage dispensers. I've got samovars, blood wine cauldrons, and elven wine salvers. Visitors will be invited to enjoy a nice drink with their visit. I'm working on lemonade and iced tea vendors now. I still have 600 prims to go!
My goal is to leave Bag End open. I might visit in a cat avatar I've recently acquired. That wouldn't be too disruptive.
So... Anybody else a compulsive builder? Is there a twelve-step program somewhere? Somewhere in a sandbox, perhaps?
Come visit Bag End! Stop by for a drink! Valinor, Sakura Island (89, 231, 21)

No! No! You can't make me! You can't!
Actually, maybe my thumb can. It's killing me. I built all of Bag End on a MacBook Pro, and my thumb on the clicker is ow, ow, ow. I'm home now with my G5 and my Wacom tablet, but I'd have to get off the couch...
I'd be a good hobbit. Feed me and let me rest.

Just made Bag End public with a Classified ad. Of course, given the efficiencies of that system, nobody will ever find it!
Current pic attached...
