I had the "giant boxy porn place" problem on my first plot of land. I had a nice PG mountain top, and right over the sim border appeared this awful place. AT first I was upset, but then I realized that these places always go broke and close pretty quickly--which it did.

The sign problem can be solved by surround the sign with a lovely landscape texture. If if his plot is only 16 sq m, just build a nice wall or waterfall. I suppose you can't technically surround it, but you could build on two or three sides and hide it from your home.

Better yet, put up a big sign that says "we won't pay your extortion money."

Good suggestions Barbarra. Actually, in such a case although land rules state one cannot totally block another person's piece of land... that's exactly what we did in DarkWood. A user purchased a single 16m piece of land just to harass neighbors by setting up a tall, ugly white prim column. We blocked it on all sides with nice looking walls and trees. What's the user going to do, complain TOS violation? LOL

Oh, we also filed multiple abuse reports and sent emails to Linden Lab. Within a few days, that user was gone from the land.

And sadly we do have our fair share of stupid players in SL.

SL gives them the possiblities to express and annoy people with their stupidity...That's why you see so many of them.

The reason people like this get away with things like this is two fold:
1) Folks don't officially complain often enough, and they back down too readily.
2) Linden Lab doesn't step in to such matters unless it is seriously brought to their attention. With vigor.

I agree with some other posts in this forum: Abuse Report, Abuse Report, Abuse Report. Maybe not every hour or day, but if many (REALLY many) people start AR'ing them from time to time (weekly?), maybe it will rake up their support costs.

If it takes 1 minute to handle an abuse report (even just to read it and push the 'RESOLVED' button), 1000 AR's would take about 8 work hours. If it takes more than 1 minute, that might mean more work... The bad news is, as I'm calculating, it isn't a significant value, maybe only a couple hundred USD's per month at best, probably not enough to mean much to Linden Labs.

Well, still, Abuse Report if you think it's griefing and extortion, according to the ToS (I think it is.)

We did buy the land back, and it was stupidly expensive. .

Well, it must be nice to know that you assisted him in his extortion.

There are alot of good statments in this thread and I agree these signs are annoying, also they are disrupting the current economy around the parcels they are placed on.

I was recently looking to buy some land and I found as nice size lot 8000+ meters (cant remeber the exact amount) for less then L$5 per meter in a mature sim!!! As I was walking the parcel wondering why this land was cheap (1st thought the person was selling to get out of SL) then I saw it... the signs hovering over a 16m2 parcel set for sale for 20k which was half the price for the 8000+ parcel, needless to say I didn't buy the land I kept track of it and for over a month and never sold.

These signs are forcing people to either waste prims to cover them up, sale their land to get away from them or buy the overinflated parcels to get rid of them!

I hear people saying to have this guy choke on his tier, well I personaly pay the $125 a month tier run no buisnes mode to support it so therefore it is all coming out of my pocket and I look at my check book at the end of the month and dont even notice it. I know I'm not the only one in SL that does it so I personaly dont think he is going to choke on his tier.

Covering the signs up will just prove his point in that sim is worth less so most likely he will sale the land at a fair price just to move to another sim and start fresh with new signs.

I strongly agree with the points made in previous post about fileing ARs and calling the lindens personaly to complain, there is enough evidence in these forums to prove these signs are disrupting people's experience in SL which is stated in the ToS.

this is what walls are for

all i gotta say is i here you guys crying over this person, whom i live next door to :(
but think about this, you dont' like the signs.....put up some walls and ban him from your land. i don't like certain things but that doesn't mean remove them from the game cause then this game would be totally boring. what may be peace to you is not to someone else. if they ever took churches away from sl i would flip. you don't approve of what one does, don't talk to them or look at their stuff. simple as that. in rl you don't have neighbours being kicked out cause they are to loud, or wear the clothes you don't like or drive a car thats not to your liking.
fact is you buy land to do what you please just as you buy your home and do what you please. hell i live next to him i threw up walls and banned him do i care what he does on his lot? hell no, he's paying to show all residents how stupid he really is. i think it's quite funny truthfully. and i think if he wants the world to know how retarded he is, hey by all means let him.
all i know is if we start removing more from the game, there will be nothing left to the game except a chat room. and who wants to join just another chat room, not i

Kinga, I respect your opinion 100%. But imho, you're 100% wrong. :D

Put up walls? (why should his neighbors use prescious prims to wall him in?). Ban him from land? What does he care-- he puts up his ugly blocks then never returns. Eliminating scum from the game makes it totally boring? I'd have to say just the opposite is true. Don't talk to them or look at their stuff? Hard to not look at something towering in the land next to you.

In RL, if a neighbor trashes a neighborhood, disturbs the peace or tries to extort you, there are lawsuits, there are criminal charges, and there's "call your cousin Guido to tell him if he doesn't clean his act up, he's not gonna walk so good no more."

Nothing funny about the kind of person described here. There's no humor in people who harass and extort other people. The only reason they do so is because they think they can get away with it. There are ways to prove them wrong.

You think removing such people from Second Life will make the game worse? I have to differ; it just might make SL a whole lot better.

Right.. I am 100% with you guys here... Why do I have to put up with ugly signs on my neighborhood advertising the whole world? Where it looks so trashy?

I had to sell a land in a beautiful lake view just because of the trash signs around the hill the land was...

Oh well.. but anyway, i found something better...

In real life there are rules to follow too. My neighbors cut the grass when is getting high and dont trash it around or leave old cars in their drive ways or leave garbage around or advertise with annoying signs or they will be sued...

Paying an awful amount in SL to see that is awful!

In another thread somewhere...

An idea was posted to put up a wall on your property blocking the view, on 3 sides if you own that many. And I think make them phantom? Apparentally this was done to the abuser in question and he reacted very strongly to it and crossed the line so the person could AR him for something else.

Just don't react, build a wall to block the view and wait and see what happens. Stay within TOS yourself and he will cross the line when you don't relent. Have that AR finger ready! Good luck.

umm, no they don't get sued for having trashy cars or letting the grass get to high
where the hell do you live, sounds like a dream world to me. and besides tall grass is nice sometimes and so are trashy old cars. it's what makes neighbours unique
man what kind of boring world do you want to live in?

Actually Kinga, most decent neighborhoods anywhere have community rules and guidelines that can bring lawsuit or criminal action of breached. If you think tall weeds and rusty cars in yards make life wonderful... please stay living where you live and not by me. LOL

Yes, with my previous account on second life, before I left game for a few months, I encountered the same problems, indeed with this same guy (Lazarus Divine) Nobody can penetrate his brain, and it seems, because you can transfer Lindens to your creditcard back, that he only tries to make money of it. This guy doesn't understand the game. and therefor I think, this guy needs an ass whipe, a kick under his ass. If you read this, Lazarus Divine, think twice on what you do, you don't make friends in this world nor in Real Life and if you want to make easy money, apply then for a job as garbageman or website host.
