Should the default permissions for animations be copy/no transfer?

In case you haven't heard there is a bug out there which is causing people to lose animations when they load them into a device/object. Typically they are moving a large number of animations from one device to another, but the problem seems to occur during the last step, when they move them from their inventory into an object.

If you make dances or AO animations, it's likely that someone has contacted you recently about losing them in just this manner.

There is a way that we as animation makers can avoid this problem. We can sell AO animations and dance animations as copy/no transfer by default instead of no copy/transferable. That way if a copy is lost when transferring, they should still have one in their inventory.

I'd like to hear what other animators have to say about it though. Is there a good reason that AO animations and dances should be transferable rather than copiable?

Kind of depends on the usage of the animations, I would think. To use one of your examples, the makers of certain dance animations might not want, say, club owners to be able to buy a single animation and place multiple copies all over their clubs. But animations that are really only useful to an individual, like AO animations? Sure, why not. There's an extra value to certain customers there too, those that want a copy of their AO in several personal "look" folders or would like to use some of the same animations in multiple AOs.

But I guess it's also up to the individual creator to decide how they want to deal with their customers' painful issues, especially assuming this bug is hopefully transitory and will go away in an upcoming update.

All of my poses and AOs are copy/no transfer. I started doing this when I lost a loaded AO device under the floor. Took me ages to find it, so I changed the permissions on the ones I sell. I have been thanked by many people for doing this.

For the few things I have left that I decided to keep no copy/tran I have yet to hear anyone have issues.

Well, if it's a couple's animation in a poseball like the salsa ones, I think no copy is fine. I'm talking only about raw animations that someone would put into an AO or dance gadget.

Rufuse No Copy Items

I personally refuse to buy anything that is no copy. I have lost way too much over the past year to even consider any other option. Thankfully a majority of animators have not had a problem selling me copy items and the ones that wont sell , they just lost a huge customer,

If you want to buy an animation ask the creator if they will sell you the ani as a copy item, you will normally be asked to pay 3 to 5 times the price but believe me it is worth it, especially with all the "rezzing" rooms that exist today. Its pretty nice to have ahouse that has a room that can change from a bathroom to a kitchen to a "fun room" and back. the limitation is that the items rezzed MUST be copy.

ok steps down from the soapbox

But if you put the animation into a dance gadget, you only need one copy to animate a whole room full of dancers. So little is lost unless the club owner has multiple locations.

Man, I'm not sure what to do with my items. I had them set to copy/no-transfer until customers started complaining that they want to be able to transfer them (eg. to buy as gifts.) I guess I can just sell two versions of each item with different permissions, but that could get confusing at the point of sale, what with the multiple slightly differing vendors.

Yeah I took a very narrow definition just to help illustrate my point, I now see the types of dances you mean.

I would love to see more copy/notrans poses/animations available out there; that'd snag my customer loyalty in a nanosecond.

I'm always so paranoid that I'm going to somehow lose all my nocopy/trans poses/anims...in fact, I think I already *have* lost some due to inventory glitches. :(
