I'm new and my avatar doesn't look remotely human. It's got no head and sticky out arms that look to be dripping wax. I've tried modifying it's appearance but that does no good at all.

It really sounds like you're having video issues. Can you tell us your computer's specifications (CPU, RAM, video card, etc.)?
