Where can you get a copy of poser? Is it free?

Are there alternatives?

No it's not free. You can pick up an older version for much cheaper than the latest version using ebay; older versions work just as well as the latest for SL animating. I would recommend this if you are serious about animating.

The main free option is Avimator. I also know people use DazStudio with the bvh plugin available here; I don't know if that is free, but if not it is certainly cheaper than Poser.

Poser is a commercial program that lists for $199.99, although it is available for somewhat less.

Avimator (http://www.avimator.com/) is free and was created specifically for making SL poses.

Even better, QAvimator is optimized for SL, (locking frame one) without some of the clutter/confusion of software with capabilities beyond what we can take advantage of in SL.

There's more in the sticky thread of free/commercial anim editors, why not check there? ;)
