I have edited out this original post since the script is no longer needed for Poser 6. If you own Poser 6, make sure that you download the service release for it. More information is available here:

http://www.sluniverse.com/kb/article.aspx?id=10229

I have also removed the original python script for Poser since it is no longer needed.

It works Great! Thank you! I can now use Poser 6 to make SL (ok very basic) Animations.

That is a more than exceptable fix for now. Manualy edditing files can be no fun! It leads to lots of mistakes also. Better to have a script do it, They can do it the same way everytime and alot faster! :)

Thanx

Christiano,
Poser 5 already has auto-balancing. What is different with it in Poser 6? Just curious.

The auto-balancing in Poser 6 is different than in 5 - in fact, it is what is causing the export problems. There is not a tremendous amount of new stuff to justify an upgrade - I am just one of those people who always has to have the latest version. I do find it to be faster and the UI a little more intuitive, but it is not an earth shattering update.

Thanks Cristiano,

I too just purchased 6 and just starting to learn to use it. Very helpful information for us newbies to know :)

Finally have it installed, thanks again for your expertise. Hope to drill you for more information in the future :)

Do you need to install the BVHcleanup.py script each time Poser6 is run. I seemed to add it to the palette ok but when you close Poser then restart it has gone from the palette.
I am hoping that its something silly I am doing.

I'm just learning animations, and I'm having problems with poser 6 and the BVH cleanup utility... if I don't do the cleanup util, SL says "Unable to read animation file. Can't get rotation order" ... so I try the BVH cleanup, and it says "Selected file was not a BVH file" (yes, I exported to a BVH file) ... then says:

Traceback (most recent call last):
File "<string>", line 38, in ?
Selected file was not a bvh file

I dunno what I'm doing wrong. :/

lemme answer my own question:

you have to save the animation as a poser animation and THEN export to BVH, then do the cleanup.

That is odd - I don't have to save as a Poser animation first before exporting and then using the cleanup - are you on Win or Mac?

If anyone is having problems with the SR for Poser 6 and is being forced to use vanilla Poser 6 for any reason, then it's likely you may run into the bug with this Python script that Ritz mentioned.

The problem was that Poser was saving the bvh files as filename.BVH, and the script was only checking for lowercase "*.bvh", so make sure your bvh files have a lowercase extension if you get that error message. :P

Excellent script, works perfectly although I find I have to export the .bvh as 'Scaled Automatically' for it to find anything to do - without scaling, it just skips through and comes up 'Clean!' but the file still won't upload lol.

Also, big yay cheers to Ritz Pinkerton for pointing me here, it's invaluable :)

Its up to version 6 so you may find good prices on version 5. I think folk have said 4 is also suitable for our needs. I have seen some good prices for version 5 on ebay.

Please note that you don't have to use this script any longer - there is a service pack for Poser 6 that resolves the export problem. Check out their site for more info.

There is a Poser6 demo version available at that site. It should give you enough of a play to see if it's for you or not. I believe there is an alternative which can produce animations. But I have no experience at all of them. Poser seems to be the commonest solution.

I saw that on Ebay. But considering Poser6 is still very new, £20 would have me a bit suspicious. Especially when it's advertised as follows :-

"Please note: This auction is for the cd only, no box or documentation. serial code and instructions included. this is not a trial or time limited demo. Full working version. Please be aware of these facts before bidding."

The upgrade to SR1 is needed so that BVH files can be exported correctly formatted as there was a problem with the initial release.

exporting to bvh
07-25-2005 00:13
I have no problems exporting a walking anim to sl. I just can't seem to get a regular pose to work. Keeps giving me "can't get rotation order."
I've tried saving to pose file then saving to bvh.
Also tried the bvh cleanup py script.

any help is appreciated.
thanx
