Is there a way to clear the pose dots? I clicked all the buttons before I knew what the pose dots did, and now that I know what they're for, I want to use them. Now, they're all filled up with useless poses for the animation I'm working on.

Very useful!

Now what I need is a guide for getting foot placement right in Poser/SL so to minimalize the sliding feet.

I know, practice, practice, practice. :)

a bump for a great thread!

And a little about my framerate experiences...

I animate no lower than 24 fps... I try and keep it close to 30 and I have very few 60 fps anims, just for experimantation in different types of lag soup.... If the sim fips drops to 2... than that 60 fps anim is a 2 fps anim... so is the 15 fps or the 12 or the 2 fps anim.... in a lag situation when fps drops below 15 you cant see a difference between a 15 and a 60 fps.... But if the fps are around 20 or more, the 15 fps anim can never get smoother, it's set at 15 fps... So let's say fps in game are up to 45, that 15 frame anim will still look like a 15, and the 60fps will look like a 45 fps, but I find 30 is a better target than 15...

taking the diference between designing a 15 and a 30 fps into account shouldnt be overlooked either. Lets assume it's a 5 second animation. at 15 fps you have 75 frames to work with... at 30 fps you have 150... with 150 frames you can add many more keyframes with subtler changes and control more of the animation's nuances removing a lot of chop to movement, as a sim lags up it will skip keyframes being displayed and you will only lose a few of the nuances in the animation leaving the base movement unchanged.

Any of you who have my flipping jump anim for an overrider will see the 'compression' in different areas of the world depending on lag at the time...

one hell of a long bump

Great thread Chipster, awesome info specially for us noobs!

Do see a slight "controversy" bout frame rate.

Keep in mind that you should "plan" your animation first, nothing complicated. The fps thing is an issue because of lag in game. As Ferran mentioned if your rate is low that's as good as it gets, BUT, this is where you make the call as to what's more important to your animation, if it's high and you want to see the "whole" animation and you hit lag, ie. club fulla rump shakers, your cute wiggly butt may end up with lookin' like "ass left" from skipping frames and you may just appear as you broke a hip!

So you must decide how intricate your animation is to be and try to use an appropriate fps. I'd rather it be a little slow but see it all, then extra smooth and only see the whole thing when I'm by myself in the desert.

Great thread and ty to everyone in it!

Did you quote this from somewhere chip? I remember reading that analogy somewhere. Perhaps I'm crazy and just had a similar analogy in my head, but either way. It's always good to see people posting information to help other people.

Cheers.

Nope. I wrote it, though I may have borrowed the analogy from somewhere. God only knows where half the stuff rattling around in my brain came from :D Oh, and *bump*

Bumpitty bump.

And rather than bumping for all eternity... is there any chance that LL could set up a second Wiki, alongside the LSL wiki, to hold information like this?

Software Versions?
01-23-2005 09:35
Total newbie here- But havent seen this mentioned yet....

Do I need the most recent version of Poser to make animations?

Is poser the only software that will make an animation file?
(oh and sory to ask this here, because I'm sure it hs been mentioned somewhere) What is the file format I need to export to upload?

Thanks for your help- This forum has been very helpful.

You don't need the most recent version of Poser to make animations--I just got Poser 6 (as opposed to 7) and it seems to be working okay. If you don't want to buy poser, you can download Qavimator for free. But I don't really like Qavimator. The program is a pain, and I can always tell the animations that were made in it because they have a slight "hitch" in the loop.
