Well I imagine windlight will be along next. They had it up (albeit barely) in the first look viewer for a while. It looks aweome. Also, I noticed RenderDynamicReflections in the debug settings, which it stated was in the experimental stage. I tried it and it worked, (barely), but it was neat to see fuzzy reflections of a red, green and blue box in a full shiny prim :)

Agree with Usagi ;)

Or (as we have all been wanting) HTML On A Prim? Maybe the ability to view Flash Video, such as YouTube.

heh- I could go on about "the next big thing"

You had that before voice, you should have made the most of it then, other features turn now :)

I was looking through the Debug Settings list yesterday and it did seem like there were more settings related to the webpage-on-a-prim stuff than there were before...

That's already possible. I don't remember how, but I know it's been mentioned before as possible and I did run accross a place the other day that claimed to allow you to watch YouTube videos, but I didn't check to see if it was true.

The grid goes through up and down ebbs and flows of stability...the recent voice addition does not change this pattern.

It will always be this way because of the dynamic user-generated environment.

SL is extremely ambitious, and LL works feverishly behind closed doors to fix it...trust me.

I think they will continue to test new technologies, and at the same time stabilize the code—there are many different departments at work simultaneously.

Wind-Light is the next addition I think.

I would expect the next thing will be Windlight, even if they can't get it to look right unless you're stuck at precicely 22 M altitude, and even if it requires a minimum of a 256 MB VRAM video card with full OpenGL 2.0 support to run SL at all after they introduce it. If it looks terible at any other altitude, or makes anyone without a super video card see SL with solid cartoon-colored skies and warped horizons and no clouds, they will just shrug and say "But it's PROGRESS! All the new systems will be seeing things this way, so we have to meet the demand from our customers for photo-realistic sunrises and sunsets!"

The fact that tens of thousands of people have a degraded experience in a post-windlight SL won't matter a whit to them. At least based on their recent performance with the Chatterbox UI, and the introdiction of Voice, and their reactions to the problems so far with WindLight.

*sigh*

Age verification that requires some really intrusive proof of age and a high risk of identity theft will be next after that. In the name of protecting Children from SL, in spite of the fact that Open Registration with no verification virtually ensures that children can and will gain access to much of SL.

Meh. WIndlight's video card specs are easy to meet. I just dont like it for some reason. It just doesnt look right.

And I'll pass on the "age verification" bit. Might as well just hand over all personal info to some guys in a dark alley.

Actually, I think puppeteering may be the next big thing, after WindLight gets stable.

How about the ability to make prims block sounds and text...

How about a way to divide a parcel in 3 dimensions (can you say, rent a certain level of an apartment building out and let the tenant set their own parcel settings)

How about real weather...

How about the option to stick a webcam "face" of me on my avatar?

Ok, so you gotta be REEEEALLY secure in your looks. ;)

Maybe have the lips of avatars move in sync to your speech or even text chat??

Animatable hands & fingers would be nice.

The software process the webcam image of the user's face and converts it into facial expression data.

The facial expression data can either drive the avatar's face or produce events in scripted objects.

The facial expression events would be used by scripters to give prim avatar heads facial expressions controlled by the operator's facial expression.

Something like that.

Nice thought, but from the point of the capabilities of the serverside code, it would increase the loading by a factor 400+. Even if you preset horizontal parcels, so that every parcel can be subdivied by say 20 mtrs in height steps, you are in effect remapping the 2D map data for each layer, and how high can you go vertically in SL?... now you get the picture. Then if you tried making those internal parcel maps variable?.... then you get into huge numbers.

As far as media controlling, that system is already available in SL, whereby each floor can have its own media player/screen unit and play its own playlist, without effecting any other media player/screen on other floors.

Depending on the scale which you think in... IMHO the next BIG thing will be the release of the Open Source Serverside code. That will change SL forever.

I hope you're right and it had better happen SOON. The signs of the times being what they are.

I think maybe the next big thing will be Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. There's always room for Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.
