Yes. Case in point: Someone who has artistic talnet but who also has physical limitations that prevent them from working more than an hour or so without resting. It would be impossible for them to hold down most RL jobs.

Oh, so your friend is a parent in today's world?

But in SL, they can work a bit, rest, work a bit more , rest... and can essentially work at the pace their body allows them to maintain, setting their own schedule.

Good point. I would still think though that a person in that position would make more money being self-employed in RL. I have some non-obvious ailments that impact my RL life. I sincerely doubt I could land, much less hold down, a regular 9-5 job working for someone else. But I do pretty well as a programmer running my own business. The same talents and abilities that help me earn a decent living in RL help me in SL of course, for two months in a row my little store has made enough to cover all of my tier, my premium fees, and enough left over that I don't really want for anything in SL. I don't make enough to withdraw US$, but certainly enough to to pay LL.

I'm not saying it's impossible of course, I know some people are obviously making a living at nothing but SL. But I think it's got to require a combination of skill, comittment, and some luck. Personally I can earn more in an afternoon of RL than a month of SL.

This is somthing that's been on my mind since I started my little business.

Is it possible for a person to really make their living by creating and selling things in SL? Putting aside land, casinos, private island rentals etc, can a person create products in SL, set up a shop and make a RL living by seling them?

In short, if I work really really hard on my business can I go tell my boss where he can shove his crappy job, pleeeeeaaaase?

Vale

Very possible and living proof :)

It's a complex equation, depending on your RL skills and income needs, versus how much you enjoy SL and how much time you can put into what is in essence a high-risk venture with probably one of the lowest pay scales in the country. Luck and timing also play a part.

For someone who is young, unmarried, and with no financial debt (such as a car payment and/or mortgage), now is great time to take some risks. Same for someone with a minimum wage job and no benefits. SL may not pay well now, but there is the possibility that it will continue to grow into an industry-wide platform just as the world wide web did. And if not, well, it was fun while it lasted.

For those of a certain (cough cough) age, however, such a career move would be insane. I would have to be wildly successful for SL to even tempt me to leave a very good job with benefits and a pension plan. And even then, the short-term risk might be too high to compensate for the potential long-term gain. I don't have all that much "long-term" left to go. ;-)
