SUBJECT:
I NEED DESPERATE HELP I GET RUTHED AND CANNOT GO INTO APPEARANCE, EXPERIENCE MAJOR CRASHES OR GETS DROPPED FROM INTERNET/ GET LOGGED OFF.

PROBLEM: (with either Second Life 1.18.3, 1.18.4(3) or SL Release Candidate Software First Viewer
1- Persistent Crash on login
2- Ruthed, Frozen or land at coordinates 10,10,10.
3- If a successful log in, Avi is fine for a few seconds, maybe minutes then I freeze again.
4- Avatar walks backwards, into the ground. Cannot go into appearance. Then I get dropped and loose connection with internet.
5- Often get error ”gestures cannot be loaded”
6- I could be on a pose ball and when I stand, I freeze or freeze while Teleporting.
7- Some days are good and most are really bad. Same problem with an Alternate Avi.

COMPUTER SPECIFICATIONS
DELL 3000 Dimension desktop, with Netgear Router and new GIGABIT PCI Ethernet card adapter (10,100,1000 mbps), 40GB of hard drive space available. XP Home Edition, Cable Modem, XP Pentium 4, 2.80GHZ, New 2GB RAM, New Nvidea GE Force 6200 250MB.

TEMPORARY FIXES:
Delete Second Life cache and create new Cache folder in different directory. This seems to work momentarily and then it reverts back to problem referenced above.

ATTEMPTS MADE TO RESOLVE PROBLEM
Have tried the following:
1- Ran full hardware diagnostics in my computer. It all passed.
2- Upgraded Ram, from 500 to 2 GB. (Removed the 500MB and installed two GB RAM sticks)
3- Upgraded my video card
4- Reinstalled XP. (Not formatted. this will be the last resort)
5- Installed a Netgear Ethernet PCI card for 1000mbps.
6- Uninstalled SL from the root by running an erase utility and reinstalled it in a different directory.
7- Upgraded all drivers directly from manufacturer (Video, Bios, NIC,)
8- Installed all Windows updates.
9- Ran msconfig and disabled all startup items and disabled all non Microsoft services as well
10- Reset my IP address
11- Removed my firewall and virus protection
12- Ran spyware and also PC Pitstop Optimize.
13- Ran Virus scan, system defrag, and yes system restore also.
14- Called my ISP and they came to my house and found internet signal to be strong
15- Per http://www.speakeasy.net/speedtest/ my download speed is 13,000 kbps and upload is 3000 plus kbps

I think Desmond might have answered your question -

/327/82/223338/1.html

This can happen due to a huge friendslist. If your list is around the 1k mark, the only way to stop that from happening is to trim it down severely.

Apart from the huge friendslist suggestion.......
I´m no tech expert, but a few obvious questions come to mind: does this also happen when you log into a different location? Have you tried detaching everything and reducing all your graphics options to the minimum?
The gestures cannot be loaded from database seems to be a bug, it seems to happen to lots of people on and off.
You´ve done a lot at your end already, but since it´s also happening to your alt, it could be a combination of a system problem and an SL problem.
I know a friend of mine had pretty much the exact same problem which cleared up by itself btw. For her, detaching everything and reducing all graph options, plus clearing cache before every logon helped temporarily.

Good luck!

hmmm

strange

why are you using a router? can you try bypassing the router and just go straight from your modem into the computer?

log into SL and detach everything (use the detach all command)

log out and clear cache

those are my only suggestions at this point....it seems you've done everything else

I use a router and have no troubles like this.

Why use a router - because the computer is FAR FAR AWAY from the place the internet actually enters the house, and several computers share a connection. Unless I want to cram every computer in the house in one tiny room that only can really fit one person (and there's two of us), I need to use a network. Simple as that.

I'd really never be able to use SL anymore if it couldn't support computers entering from a network.

Good point about removing all attachments. I'd try that first. And no... not going to follow up the fellow with email, people who post here aren't free tech support reps. Doubt he's going to get much if any response there.

Ruthed Cant Go Into Appearance...

Thanks everyone !!

I use a router which also happens to be a cable modemand is failrly new and lease it from Comcast and use it cuz i have a wireless computer in the other room.
Yes, i have had my friend log into his computer and has had no trouble whatsoever. I also had him take everythinng i was wearing off.. huds. clothes, everything you name it and when i logged into my computer, the same problem still persisted. I had done the trick deleteing cache and it seemed to work but after a while it kind of stopped. A friend things it may be my hard drive. I ran CHKDSK and fixed 5 files. i also ran other HD test after and those passed. Thanks for the leading me to Desmond's thread. I will delete my frinds'list of 60 ppl, see if it helps and let you all know. ohh and yes, i also did adjust my graphics preferences to a minimum an dit didnt help. ALso have compared settings with a friend's and still was a no go.

You are dropping packets
11-16-2007 07:27
This behavior happens on very slow bandwidth connections, wireless connections, and very bad connections. Your AV is not completing initialization. Can't go into appearance is the key symptom. In your case, your current route from your PC to Linden Labs has an unreliable path/host/router in it. This can clear up on its own if the route changes. However, you can get more information.

Download Winmtr http://www.downloadsource.net/2839/WinMTR/

use this host as your destination data.agni.lindenlab.com

You'll find out who's dropping the packets between you and Linden labs. After that, you can complain to your ISP by sending a printout of the WinMTR report to them.

Good Luck,

Zepar

Yeah, that sounds like a packet dropping issue. I get it right before a storm or major rain... and that's because the phone box at the end of the driveway tends to be a weeeeee bit under water.

So, you've called the ISP and they found the signal to be strong. You've had a friend log into the account from elsewhere and the account behaves just fine for them (btw, this is not the brightest thing to do...), and you've installed a new network card.

I'm going to assume that it didn't work before the new network card - and if it did, then there's your culprit. I'm going to assume that the ISP tested the signal strength at the jack, not the modem/router.

So, do you play any MMOs? If so, how are they behaving? If they are yo-yoing (MMO's have a better cache system, so you only get yanked back when running etc.. disconns are usually pretty low), then it could be the router/modem, cables in between them, or the computer. I am fortunate in that I have more than one computer in the house.. but if you don't, have a friend bring theirs over and test the network. If theirs works just fine when using the same cables, then the problem is the computer - most likely the network card or it's drivers/installation. If theirs doesn't check the cable or the router/modem.

I live out in the boonies.. I fry these things all the time.

I like this suggestion. Also, I didn't catch whether you are using a wireless connection or a hard-wired connection? If you are wireless, try using a physical cable.

Like Raudf said, check the cables between your router/modem and the computer. Switch them out or shorten them if you can. A USB "cable" is going to be much slower than an ethernet cable; try using a true multi-thread ethernet cable.

And yes, this is a public forum; to ask for email personal help is probably not going to get you a lot of answers.

Issue Resolved !!!!! Go Dmz... Read On....
11-20-2007 23:22
Happy Thanksgiving!!!..... I just wanted to thank you ALL again for trying to help me out with my PC last week. I also thought I'd share with you that after trying to rule out everything short of reformatting my drive, it came down to my wireless router hooked up to my main PC. Then, it dawn on me to call my ISP (Comcast) and have them run a test check. In doing so, they suggested I Demilitarize my router by going into the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ), usually used by gamers. Sure enough, you guessed it, it worked !!! So, if you have a router in your home network, and have issues with lag, or as in my case being Ruthed, you should seriously consider it by calling your ISP and request it (is FREE). make sure you have McAffe Firewall, and its entire Security Package , or any other Firewall in place. Thank you again for your help!!.. TTFN :))

Nice, but rubbish-it means you can be attacked by everything that comes your way on the Internet. it measn you don't have a firewall. All ports open. Invitation to all sorts of malicious stuff. I wouldn't do it and there sure is another way-sounds seriously like a badly configured firewall then.
