I know this may be kind of 'backward' to put an answer without a question, but maybe this will help someone out there.

I'd spent weeks having horrible problems, and have been on the phone a long time with Company tech staff - and after fighting it about maybe 10 - 12 hours I've finally got my avatar fully working again.

IF:

- you are ruthed or avatar-less on login for 10-15 minutes,

- everything takes 15 minutes to load even though there is little around you

- you seem to be stuck underwater or underground in a sim corner

- or you never fully load yourself and the world around you at all

AND

- you have a friendlist on the order of 1000 people,

... the solution is to drastically cut back your friendlist.

No two ways about it.

This seems new with the last release. I'd tried simply deleting the cards: no go. Shutting off online visibility and mapping *seemed* to have helped a little, but not a lot.

Yes it was incredibly painful to delete more than 9 out of 10 people I know - and I *do* know them - I'm online a lot. I'm down to my estate managers and some critical business contacts right now - and a few people I've known since long before SL that I can count on one hand.

If there's any silver lining to this, it seems that deleting someone you haven't seen in ages is roughly about as useful as deleting someone that is around and presently online, best I can tell.

So for all you landbarons and content-creator barons out there: if you are lagging bad on login for the past few weeks or simply can't get in, that's what's going on.

And a big thank you to Spike and Leo Linden for helping me save my avatar and helping determine the cause, even though I wish there was another way we could have solved it.

What version of SL are you running? I wonder if this applies to the newer ones only... which have given me a lot of troubles.

I've noticed this problem as well. Not as severe (about a 30 second to a minute lag time), but with a friend's list of 200+, it stands to reason it would not be as bad as yours.

I've got about 150 and don't really notice much difference between startup and 'been in for an hour'.

I wonder why this has such a big impact on load time. I would rather load quickly and have my friends list take some extra time than have the friends list delay things...

Both the current release and the release candidate do this - I'm on Win XP and Vista across 3 different machines, all do the same.

Over 1000? WHOA ... mine is tiny, well pruned and only has people I want on it.

A bit like a bonzai - small, perfectly formed and hard to keep that size :)

(If I could only apply that to my inv)

Wow.... not good. But what *is* good for me is that I have the Nicholaz version ... and hopefully there'd be a better solution than that if those probs ever occur.

I wonder if this might have something to do with the new search system.

I have this problem though my friends list is only about 120 or so. My avatar takes a while to load, surroundings won't load, I get "downloading clothing" every single time I log in etc.

The answer should NOT be to prune your friends list. Something has changed and LL should be able to figure it out and fix it. Has there been a JIRA submitted? If so, please link to it.

Thanks so much for the heads-up that this is perhaps related.

Thanks Des; very helpful. I always suspected my anti-social tendencies would pay off. :p

Probably related: I've been seeing transient ";(hippos)" and ";(waiting)" in my Friends list for the past week or two, when it had been gone for a long time. Somehow I just never thought to report it as a problem--I guess just because it seems like "just one of those things." At this point, I get a little thrill every time something successfully rezzes from Inventory, so I'm pretty easily satisfied. I wonder how many other potentially serious problems go unreported now just because the "noise level" of whacky behavior has gotten so high.

Does this affect my myspace friends as well?

One thing I have found by having the large friend list is when you hop online, not only do you get the day to day usual tasks, but then you get bombarded with people saying HI and trying to catch you online.

This is a great reason for me to slim that list down. Thanks for bringing this to our attention. Its golden info!

I get that with my list of 20 friends. Can't imagine 1000. Busy mode must be Desmond's true best friend.

...and I can't use it! Busy mode refuses inventory last I checked, i.e. the notecards that allow me to get detailed requests and process them in an orderly fashion.

Heh, kinda silly to 'be on my friendlist' anyway. I know who my friends are without no stinkin' friendlists. I answer every note or IM I get from anybody, if I see it.

Because nothing says 'loser' more than a too-important guy on the internet...
