what the hell have you broke with this stupid alt button now?
i can't even chat anymore as my menu buttons are constantly popping up on me rather than letting me chat to friends.
this is really useless and pathetic and i really must say rather than impressing me for once with features i must say your making me want to tell everyone about how crap this game is. i mean what the hell were you snorting when you came up with this retardedness.
really, for the love of your residents....FIX THE STUFF YOU BROKE AND STOP ADDING USELESS THINGS YOU CALL FEATURES!
yes i'm upset as nothing is ever improved. and it's quite hard to talk to friends or customers when you give us this shit called feature thats nothing but grief......yes this is grief.
sighs...ok i'm done venting now. just please fix and take out this moronic "feature"

I've seen several people with this issue, but I don't seem to run into it at all? It takes less than a feather touch of the Alt key to put focus on the menus, anything longer than that split second just activates the camera zoom as it has always done for me.

This is the resident answers forum, not the vent your spleen forum.

The feature feedback forum would be a more appropriate vent your spleen about the program forum.

It would be interesting to know exactly why they've decided to try to make the menus keyboard activated, given that they aren't making them keyboard activated in a way that matches normal Windows programs. I don't know how things work on Linux or Mac so I can't address keyboard menu interaction on those systems. If it's just a desire to get more normal, that's one thing, but if there is a specific goal they have in mind knowing exactly what they are after might help people come up with some ideas that satisfy their goals without messing up chatting and building.

Not quite sure what's being said here.
If I want a menu I use the mouse. If I want the camera I hold Alt down. Is there a glitch I've not noticed?

all i know is since the update my chat is screwed. my menu buttons up top keep opening when i go to type constantly that i have to click in the actual chat bar to get a word out. it's driving me completly nuts and it's very very annoying. just like when building now you go to edit a prim and few seconds later you realize your griefing your own land with replicating prims everywhere cause it's not editing the original prim your doing. it's rezzing others around it instead. it's aggrivating as hell and needs fixing a.s.a.p

Yes, the new ALT functionality sucks big-time, especially as it seems to fire rather randomly.

Especially as on german keyboard layouts, many characters you need for programming etc. are available only via alt: - all of the following: {[]}@~|

GAAH!

And I regularly change some odd things in my settings that I am unable to reproduce by starting to chat with the Menus focused. VERY BAD!

Take it out, it's unnecessary. CTRL and ALT should be modifiers to mouse behaviour only, and maybe for hotkeys.

Oh! So that's what it is!. I noticed the menus kept popping up for no apparent reason, but just thought it was another bug.

So this is actually a feature!

Ah, understood. Same here, thought I was just tired and clumsy. Yes, take it back out pleeease!!!

Have spotted my chats being slow to display on my screen despite being answered but a new one last night .. a funny line I made and got an answer to, was overtaken by my next 6 or so lines before displaying! Crazy!!!

I would just like to voice agreement here that the new Alt key functionality is extremely frustrating and was a completely unnecessary change. I am finding it very trying to engage in a conversation while attempting to do anything else. I hope that LL will reconsider this change and roll back to the previous behavior. Soon.

Oh yes, this is the one thing in the new update that drives me nuts. I'll be setting up a photo (and I take quite a few of those), and trying to nudge the camera into some given angle - and there go the menus.

Well at least I know its not just me.
My question: Anyway to stop this??!!??
Since I wouldn't want to just spleen vent without asking if there were a work-around for this wonderful 'feature'.

I haven't noticed this on my Mac, which also uses Alt to zoom in and out. How very annoying that would be! Yikes.

Guys!!
Now that the client is open-sourced, one could do what's called a "fork" of the code, and make a client which rolls back these features that irritate people... All it takes is some knowledge of C++, the free MS Visual C++ Express package, the SL client source package and about 100mb of various libraries installed to your machine. I am expecting to hear about such forks like this to be announced in the very near future.... (No, I don't have inside knowledge, just know how open-source programmers work, when there's unresolved issues with an open-source program)...

Can someone explain what exactly you all are complaining about? I see vague references to menus popping up, but I've not noticed odd behavior involving the Alt key. I guess I just happen to be using it in the precise way that the update needs, an object lesson in the problem of programmers testing features rather than testing with end-users.

Unfortunately though, in order for this to make it into the official client, Linden Lab would have to agree with this rollback and fold the changes into their own code base. And in that case, they could just make the change themselves. I really hope they do. This was not asked for, is not helpful, and just makes things more difficult to do.

i'm so glad to see most of you agreeing with me here cause i really hope they pay attention to this and get rid of the uselessness. it's gotten to the point i'm not doing anything in game except going through forums cause it's a real pain to build, chat or do anything that was once enjoyable.
just curious here....anyone else annoyed with the replicating prims while editing?

New features:
* Added 'Copy SLURL to clipboard' command in World Map

Changes:
* Linux: Flash icon when new IM arrives
* Sandbox region deletion now operates using parcel auto-return times
** Non-copyable objects will be returned to inventory
* 'Report Bug' command moved to Tools menu
* Added 'BETA' indicator to languages to reflect the status
* Rights dialog on Friends list now shows the friend whose rights are being edited
* Searching all Classifieds returns 100 results at a time (with Next and Prev buttons to flip through)
* 'Show Online Status in Search' renamed to 'Make my Online Status Visible in Search'
* Restored ability to use Alt to control camera, while still enabling menu access
** Holding down Alt and pressing WASD (etc) moves the camera
** Tapping Alt places focus on the menus.

* Added PickerContextOpacity to settings.xml

Maybe my biggest questions should be, why is this considered a new feature? What does it benefit? What does it help accomplish? Why was valuable programming time wasted in implimenting it? Why is this an example of my subscription dollars at work?

As a funny aside, when I went to go find that part of the new release notes on the website here, I noticed the release notes for the 'latest update' is for version 1.12.1. God Bless Linden Labs.

I get the menus constantly when I think my cursor is in the chat/text line.

At first I thought "Hmm... what did I do".

After numerous times, I realized it was a "feature" added and I sort of did the *shake head/snorty laugh/wtf were they thinking* combo.

Now I spew obsceneties at my monitor, instead.

If my apartment is under surveillance, I'll be playing from the Happy (Friggin) Hills Sanitarium in no time. (Or... wait.. people can't float outside my RL window and see 40 meters in, past walls. heh. never mind).

Building is also wonky, yes. Great combo since all I seem to do in SL is blab and build.

It's beginning to make me think I should drink while I play.

Here's hoping the Lindens see these posts

Cheers *clink*

Encountered this a few times last night, as did a friend who unexpectidly teleported home. At the time we didn't know what happened but figured it out later as I will explain below.

I came across this while we had an event at The Lot. I was camming around watching new people show up while I was also playing Bingo. Of course camming requires the alt button. So picture this, I am going to move the camera somewhere but someone pops in, so I don't cam away (hence just tapping the alt button as I change my mind) and type 'Hey Soandso how are you?' and hit enter. The result? A help request with the text 'y Soandso how are you?' Because the sequence ~tap alt+h+e~opens a help request. I did this about 3 or 4 times last night accidentally and to be honest I'm happy it happens, because I'm sure it is annoying the Lindens on help duty, and since it annoys them it will be fixed, god knows what annoys us sure doens't get fixed quickly.

What happened to my friend we eventually figured out was the same thing, except she intended to way 'Welcome Soandso' but of course ~tap alt+w+e~ is teleport home!

So bloody annoying....

I use Alt for camera controls all the time, and typing certain characters (such as |, @, #, etc) involves a Ctrl+Alt combination on my keyboard, but I have yet to see any of the behaviour described in this thread (or even really understand what the actual problem is).

Since it doesn't seem to affect all of us, it probably makes more sense to figure out why it's only happening to some but not others.

huh, I'll have to check this tonight, didn't know about it. In the meantime, are these problems because people are tapping Alt without wanting to focus on menus, or is this functionality bugged and you sometimes just randomly focus on menus?

also, @kinga: is the replicating prims thing related to the changed Alt functionality, or is this a separate issue?
