If you think *you* are going to be able to build anything there ... you've been in SL too long! :p

I wonder if it's going to cost us anything to enter!

In case you haven't discovered yet, Resident Answers is AKA General Discussion. =)

That's because there is no General Discussion forum here.

It does look pretty amazing: http://www.romereborn.virginia.edu/. It would be a tremendous asset to SL. Wouldn't it? (just added that bit to comply with the rules of the forum, hehe)

Yes that would be a tremendous asset. (thusly I have fulfilled the RESIDENT ANSWER)

Are there any nice historical-type sims already in SL? (once again a QUESTION is posed)

It sure would. And not just a display: real education. They could stage Roman public ceremonies, triumphal parades, pagan and early Christian religious rites, Senate debates and recreations of Cicero's orations, etc.

It would be nice to integrate it into the life of SL too: A combat sim in the Colloseum would be irresistible. Events scheduled in the Forum. (And of course, orgies, but presumably indoors someplace.)

Tha gladiators huddle in a protective circle as they look outward wondering where the lions will come up next. the crowd chears and call for there blood while the emporer looks on impasivly. Then suddently part of the floor drops down and the crowd goes silent and the gladiators tence. Then a whole pride of furries charge out form the floor.

agreed! the fact that it is a perfect replica must be a first for sl right?

i dont think venice and all the other places on SL have been made to measure brick by brick as the original place. Itwilll be an interesting feeling to be standing in it knowing that its the actual view the romans would have seen all that long ago.

technology is an amazing thing :)

Hate to be political. But if SL were to allow gladiatoral combat in this SIM - even in the historical context - won't someone find it "broadly offensive"?

The idea though is a great one and I support it effort.

"Talks are said to have begun with Linden Labs to make the entire simulation available on the internet through the company's virtual world Second Life. "

For anyone who missed that. I think this is very exciting. The educational uses of Second Life really haven't been used that much--there are some shining exceptions to this such as the NASA museum and the don't-visit-at-two-AM hallucinations project.

To be fair to the people who run the ROMA sim, while not on this grand scale, for private citizens without university funding, they've done a great job. And I have heard they have chariot races and gladiator contests, though I haven't personally been.

Rewritten for SL...

Tha gladiators huddle in a protective circle, wearing their two-prim penises and banana phones, as they look outward wondering where the lions will come up next. the crowd, blinged out so bad that the framerate is at about one frame every three seconds, chears and call for there blood while the emporer looks on impasivly, spamming chat with sound gestures and caging random folks in the stands . Then suddently part of the floor drops down jerkily and out of synch, as the scripts aren't working today and the crowd goes silent except for Section C, who are doing Chuck Norris jokes, three years too late and the gladiators tence because their connection dropped. Then a whole pride of furries charge out form the floor.

A place like this already exists. I attended a Saturnalia festival there. I'm not in world right now and can't remember the name of the place, but it is an ancient Roman roleplay community. It should not be hard to find it in the search.

It is not a faithful reproduction of the city like this place, but they do have many cool events. (and they also provide free togas to newcomers)

That's ROMA. Search for SPQR under places, and you should find it. Miss Natalia Zelmanov has an excellent write up about it here:

And because of the lag, the floor hadn't fully rezzed, so they fall back through it.

That should read "more than 5k Roman coins?" - for some reason it's not showing up.

There's ROMA and a Greek Sim Olympus. Both are supposed to be somewhat historical roleplay.

Then get griefed by newbieskinned freaks with freebie guns and penises on their heads with names like 01001001001111 Jackson and OMGIhateztehfureez Armitage, flying around the coliseum, shouting "WHY DON'T YOU LIKE ME?"

Heh. Solution is simple: A Praetorian Guard armed with "orbiters" that send griefers to a reconstruction of the entrance to Hades, millions of meters underground in a sim far, far away.
