From: Desmond Shang Exactly how I feel. Being left behind featurewise is *very* significant, and everyone knows it. Not telling us about 100 USD/mo charges before we all rushed to buy more sims was highly unethical. Let's see if the future holds redemption, or confirms my worst fears. Desmond something I do not understand here and perhaps this post will help us all. Btw I am not an island owner. 1) All mainland = voice enabled but individual landowners can turn voice off per plot of land 2) All class 4 Sims = a potential; increase in tier level for Island owners 3) All class 5 Sims at $295 per month = free voice (but the Sim owner can turn it off via Estate tools 4) But what about class 5 sims at the old rate of $195 per month? Do they: a) Have to pay more money to get voice OR b) Are able to obtain voice for free Thanks in advance Desmond and anyone else who can answer Regards John

I don't think anyone could say for sure at this point John, but If I interpret what LL is saying correctly, anyone paying old tier would have to pay an additional fee, regardless of server type. Hope that helps.

From: Darien Caldwell Can you point to where they say it will be 100 USD/mo for voice? The quote only says a possible additional fee. that could be 10 USD for all anyone knows. I'm beginning to see a pattern of gross exaggeration over this whole issue. Makes having any meaningful discourse pretty much impossible. No exaggeration whatsoever. From the zdnet article: >>Miller said voice will be free of charge to everyone during the beta and will work on any computer that can currently run Second Life. Afterward, mainland property owners and island owners who pay the current $295 monthly maintenance fee can use the feature on their property for free. Taken at face value: if you pay 295 USD monthly you get the feature. If you don't, you won't. If the intent is less than 100 USD per month, you would never make the statement in this way in the first place. My guess is that they hear us clearly and early, and don't follow through like this.

From: Lias Leandros I don't belive that Linden Lab is justified in making announcements that effectively lower the value of the investment I have made. And to make this announcement after the Class 4 Sell-off deadline is outrageous. I was being sarcastic. I don't think it is justified either.

From: Darien Caldwell The one thing you keep saying that grates my nerves is the word "investment". A sim isn't an investment. Or at the very least, a very, very bad one. You have no tangible asset. There isn't even any guarantee it will be there tomorrow. A Sim is really a very shiny vitural money pit. Once people realize this maybe they won't be so upset over the pit widening a bit. I will inform Anshe.

We are yelling the sky is falling for no reason. There is HISTORY here. And history states that we can be expected to be bent over the table and royally screwed if we don't make enough noise as soon as possible.

So if I have voice switched off on my mainland parcels, do I still have to listen to gobby sods in the next one? In fact am I going to be subjected to the racket across boundaries if I don't disable it on my land? I quite like the small sound effects and things, I guess I could just kill sound completely.

From: Lias Leandros I will inform Anshe. lol. Don't misunderstand, I never said you couldn't make money. I'm just pointing out you are paying LL $1675.00 and $295 a month for a few gigs on a $139.00 SATA Hard Drive. On a whim, LL could cancel your account, delete your server, and take all your Lindens. And you would have no legal recourse against them. I only put money in SL that im fully prepared to lose, and I hope that's the case of everyone.

Thanks, I missed that article. Yes, if that's what they end up doing, it would hardly seem fair. And the fact that they base it not on the server hardware but on what you pay, would say profit was the main motivation.

So, I guess, maybe, they didn't think that the primary value of voice technology is for users, maybe? If I need or want to speak, I guess I'd just wander off my $200/month sim into a $300/month sim, have my pow-wow with my buds, and mosey on home, right? I mean, if they're not going to make end-users pay for the privilege of speaking, I'll probably just go freeload off some sucker^H^H^H^H^H^Hlandlord who's having to pay for the privilege of me lagging his sim (with my presence and not the voice.)
If I'm a land baron, then I guess for each nano-continent (>=4 sims), I could just designate *one* of them as being the Valley of the Hearing and Speaking, is that right?
My primary use of voice is going to be for IRL business meetings, so wandering off to somebody else's nice sim, say one of the Caledon sims <g>, is not only *not* a problem, it's a benefit, since Mr. Shang then gets all the hassle and costs.
Thanks, Mr. Shang! You r0k!
