*raises hand* Surely there must be ONE Linden who is not a programmer (they can't all be working on the problem all at once and some are not programmers but ahve other jobs) that can take 5 mintues and post a blog update. Come ON LL. Even if it's an update like "Still working on this. No clue what's wrong, but we're still trying." ~Jessy

They should develop some sort of update schedule...like, every 4 hours, someone posts a line to the blog, regardless of how close to or far from a solution they think they are.

Updates would be nice, fixing it for real would be better. L Lhas a funny definition of the word "resolved".
Waking up this morning, only 25k people on and finding that I STILL cannot upload anything... (or do anythig other than stand around)... I just don' know what to say. It's not like these problems are new. What was LL doign the last 2-3 months when things were running reliatively smoothly? Obviously NOT working on system stability or redundancy while they had a break from continuously hand turning cranks on the grid.
With the concurrent population growth stalled or at least growing at a manageable level, you would think that LL would have been working hard to "catch up" so that they were not running at 99% capacity all the time leading to this kind of problem. Or, if that's not it, working on their systems so that they are less prone to "house of cards" type collapses.

Fixing the problem is important, but communicating is even more important. It's like being married to someone who won't tell you what's wrong, and here we all sit thinking that something is going on that we don't know about..
I swear, SL is cheating on us.

From: Farallon Greyskin Updates would be nice, fixing it for real would be better. Amen. But my point is there HAS to be someone at LL that isn't involved in fixing the problem. Even LL has to have people who aren't programmers/bughunters/techs. Get one of them to post an update ffs. LL said they put up the Blog to communicate with us. So communicate already!!! *thinks hard and tries to recall.....* Didn't LL post something about a Communications Monkey (referencing the Grid Monkey) a few months back? I think that monkey died of jungle fevor. ~Jessy

Even though I voted yes, I can understand why we don't see as many updates as we'd like. I work with geeky types - it's best to just leave them burried in the code and not distract them. Maybe a lab monkey liason could visit them every hour or two and try to gleen a few tidbits out of them on what's going on.. From: Jessica Elytis ...Communications Monkey... I think that monkey died of jungle fevor. Caught by playing on poseballs with a phone weasel.. Dangerous stuff, mixing species like that.

I voted No, even though I hate mushrooms. They'd probably give the job to Danny anyway

Ah, see that's the idea about customer support that LL has completely missed. They need customer support people who will let the geek-types work and only bother them then they look up from the monitor, then translate what the gridmonkey says for those of us who don't speak tech-babble (I speak appliance/small engine tech-babble.. computer is NOT my thing). *mutters* Besides, it save Customer Support some work in support tickets and live chat if we had regular updates on the 'meltdown!' Hmm... maybe I should go to Live Chat and give them a nudge to POST SOMETHING!

Agree with this 100%. Although some people would still be miffed about the service being down, people get even more annoyed when they aren't kept informed of what's going on.

How many more CS people should they hire for this and what should they get paid?
And, if the *only* update is "still working on it" do people really want to hear that or will it just lead to more people being upset?

From: Ex0dUs Montagne Theres been an update on the blog, no change in the issue, still working on it, better than no response at all though i guess It's MUCH better than no response. No response is like: "We know it exists.. you know it exists, but we don't care that you know it exists." Much happier and Frontier was smart enough not to post an ETA on the probable fix. All is right with the world!

From: Meade Paravane Dunno.. How much did they distract the lab & code monkies when they asked them how things were going? Keeping your customers informed is worth two minutes of time from the lab & code monkies. I'm on holiday from work, we have this discussion at work lol. The server guys moan that the CS team are asking for updates and stopping them making fixes. Difference at work is that the CS guys are the ones who have to answer the phones to the customers who want to know what the heck is going on and if they say "We don't know", our manager gets into a fair amount of trouble for the lack of communication.

Yes, communication is good. It lets us know they are actually aware the problem still exists and they are still working on it. Seriously I was starting to think they'd all given up and closed the office for the day.
And yeah, being married to a tech geek I know it's safer for everyone if you just leave them alone when they're working. But there's got to be someone there, the receptionist maybe who's sitting outside the tech office.. She can give us some info..
"Secretary Linden here... yes there still appears to be huge issues with the grid. I dunno what's up but Frodo Linden just picked up his keyboard and proceeded to wing it in the general direction of Sam Linden. Sam's ok, the keyboard... not so much. Frodo has been sent to the corner for a time out..."

I love the unspoken implications of them thanking us for our patience.

There are moments of time when they look up from what they are doing and are staring into space. They aren't doing anything at that point and well, they probably aren't thinking at that point either. Best time to ask them a question, but you gotta be patient or you wind up with the keyboard (in one of my co-workers case it was a piston from a lawn mower) thrown at you. I learned that tip from that self-same co-worker.. and others who failed to learn the lesson. Sadly, this meant I was the one that got sent to the lion's den, but I could always be counted on to survive!

Why they haven't given a meaningful update
07-30-2007 10:26
They are engaged in a "Crit Sit" procedure.
The first objective of that process is to identify the problem causing the symptom.
When they have identified the problem, we'll see a meaningful update on the Blog.

Don't care about a "meaningful" update. The update given is enough for me. Means LL is busting their ass on it.
We're animals in the cage. We need thrown meat of information every so often or we get cranky and start clawing at the zookeeper through the bars. *snickers*
And love the "sSecartary Linden" spoof lol. I think if Torley posted somethign like that, I'd break a rib laughing =^.^=
