Ok, I have read all the help suggestions in FAQ, did all suggestions, still nothing!
The talk button itself is grey.. have played with different settings in the wizard.. have gone to a LINDEN Island for testing.. nothing works..

Is it me or can someone suggest something here?

Thank you kindly

It seems Voice isn't holding up to the increase in use. Prior to the main viewer release, I never had a problem connecting to the spatial voice channel. Now it's *really* difficult... I often get "Connecting to spatial voice channel" or whatever, then after 30 seconds or so, "diconnecting." One-on-one conversations seem to be easy to get into still, for now. Anyone else?

I am having issue as well, but what did seem to work or perhaps just my imagination was to start a direct voice chat with somone and when that worked, disconnected and talked out loud and it worked.

I'm having similar issues.

I have it working on my own parcel, but am having trouble at the pub I manage. I've gone through About Land and my Estate Tools and double checked everything. The Voice icon appears up along the top of the SL window, but the talk button is grey. I can click the button that shows people using Voice in the area, but it's empty.

This is really frustrating.

I installed the new client this morning. Went through the wizard and it seemed ok. Then the process SLVoice.exe crashed. I closed SL and reponedit and voice did not work (no white ball etc).

I then rebooted the PC and its working again.

Might fix your issue?

Occasionally voice is wonky, but no more or less than anything else in SL. This morning after downloading the new version it took a minute to get everything working, but voice was working just fine. You may need to play with the slider controls to get everything adjusted and i also sometimes need to adjust the sound levels on my computer. So, i guess it does take some fiddling.

The ENTIRE voice system version needs to be scrapped. Thrown out along with whoever designed the whole thing. This is a terribly poor designed feature which isn't worth the trouble to download and use. They need to do it over but this time do it correctly. Instead of trying to cram everything into the huge chat box, they need to keep it like the non-voice version as far as the size and the way the current system is done.

The over sized chat box has a lot of dead space in the box itself that doesn't do anything but sit there and take up screen space. I for one wanted the voice version in sl but after seeing it and trying it out I now feel it's so bad I just don't use it.

Also, the voice doesn't sound all that clear either. Yahoo sounds way more clear and much simpler to use. Plus the background sounds are there and no matter if you use the sliders the noises in the background still drown out voice chat.

Just not worth it.

Voice and Firewalls

The bit of the FAQ about firewalls is not correct.

It is the case that voice sends outgoing data on UDP port 5060 and 5062. If those ports are blocked (e.g. by a corporate firewall) voice will not work, and a side effect is that the Land is Voice Enabled indicate will be extremely unreliable.

However that is not the whole story, from my preliminary testing it looks like you also need outgoing traffic on port UDP ports 3478 and UDP 12000-15999 enabled (as far as I can tell the client attempts to make connections on ports selected at random within this range) - these might be blocked by firewalls or routers. This may be particularly true for those on corporate networks (which is a little ironic if voice was intended to attract that userbase).

It is quite possible that a much smaller subset of UDP ports need to be enabled on firewalls for voice to work but that is the best I can narrow it down from my network logs. Unfortunately that part of the client is not opensource (another area wherer the FAW is not quite accurate), and the Vivox website is very thin on any technical information.

So if you are having voice connectivity problems it may be something blocking UDP traffic.

I have did everything as suggested here, my partner has been able to get it. Last night he could not.. but logged in this morning and had the white dot over his head.

No matter what I do, there is nothing working. My firewall is not a issue.

Any suggestions?

Go to the device settings for voice, is your mic input level saying "please wait"?

I noticed it did the first time I logged in with the new main viewer, but didn't in Monday's First Look and doesn't in the new main viewer right now (at which time I am disconnected from Voice, and have the Red icon)

Yes! Mine is. What does that mean? Is it some indication of what is going wrong? Thanks in advance! Any responses welcome.

If it never picks up your mic, voice isn't working at all. From what I've gathered.

But if you let that sit a moment, and voice IS working (see the blog), then you'll get the green input boxes and when you apply your orb should appear.

It's definitely buggy.

Is there any "one place" where a voice debug discussion should be taking place? Please excuse my ignorance if this is the wrong place...

My failed voice symptoms are:

1. preferences/voice/device settings/mic input level says "please wait". For folks that voice is working this apparently becomes a green bar indicating input level.
2. push to talk button highlights, goes from a dull blue to a bright blue, but not to orange as described in the FAQ
3. Little icons in in the communicate window are yellow. For folks the voice is working, these are apparently green.
4. I do not see the described ball over my head nor anybody elses.

Otherwise audio works within SL, sound effects, ambient noise, music, movies. I can hear myself through my own headphones with a slight delay. My voice setup, analog mic and headphones, work great, seamlessly, for voice apps like skype or teamspeak. What is wrong with the SL implementation? Unless I hear otherwise, I guess I will look at my firewall settings, but really, this seems bad. Unless voice uses whatever UDP channels are already being used by every other audio source within the SL browser or other run-of-the-mill voice apps, it "sounds" broken to me.

Me and my associates are still having trouble connecting since the new release. I'm thinking the downtime today will address it.

Mine only works in Welcome Areas...which is totally bizarre and useless. IM voice seems to work fine for me though.

1) I get a white blob over my head.
2) I've noticed that my voice volume level in the voice applet thingy is *alot* lower than in the First Look Viewer.
3) The voice widget appears to work.
4) I can't hear anyone else and no matter where I go, not even at the DAMB welcome area
5) No-one can hear me speak.

---> Thinks: Maybe I'll use the First Look viewer instead as it worked.

It worked more or less fine with my partner and me yesterday night, after I had ironed out a few problems in the setting of my microphone (like ticking the microphone in the sound settings menu...).

Voice did seem to have a tendency of crashing (or rather, not being able to connect) after a teleport, but not every time. In some cases, simply turning it off and on again did the trick. There was one sim, though, here it never managed to connect, despite the sim being enabled.

Also, we did not have any problems in turning the loudness of the ambient sounds down enough for communiction to be undisturbed.

I relogged since the maintenance is complete and found it connects to the spatial channel instantaneously. Anyone relogged and still had trouble like before?

repost from my thread that barely anyone read:

hm, I am attempting to use voice chat for the first time right now, and it isn't working for me. I am hoping someone can point out something I don't know to check, because I can't think of anything else.

I have a headset with microphone, and it is working; when I open the Sound preferences for my computer, I select the device and can see it is working. In SL I've tried pretty much every setting in the voice preferences.

Is voice chat just not supported on Macs? I'm on a Mac.

---

Tiny additional clarification: by "isn't working" I meant that I'm not even getting the white dot over my head when I enable voice in preferences. I haven't tried again since the scheduled maintenance, I'll see if it's working now.
