Same here, I was just on as soon as the grid was back up but had to log out since all of my attachments were off (HUD's, weapons, shields etc. etc. ) and they would'nt reattach so I logged off for a min. tried loggin back in but get the message that only employees can log in. Oh well just another SL screw up again, nothin new bout that.

same here with any of my prim attachments.
Looks like LL fixed the asset server... with a baseball bat. =/ I'm noticing a pattern here. Every time they go in and make a quick update/fix, it breaks so bad the grid is shut down for hours at a time. |

Unfortunately down at LL the baseball bat is filed as "precision adjustment tool, asset server & grid for the use of" LOL The baseball bat is for small and precise adjustments. If they need to fix the whole thing, they send in actually grid MONKEYS armed with large sticks. I'm wondering if I should count down for the new year, or count down the SL reopening. I mean, they have to contact thier vendor? That usually translates to "we'll be down for a few days, because no one at the vendor's office answers the phones". I've seen it happen to much, much smaller sites. At least they're updating the Blog... sorta. Just throwing this out there, but maybe there should be a blog for a regular users, and a blog for developers and other nerds, with detailed, technical explainations of what's going on. Resis could comment with their solutions (and assorted sarcasm), and LL can pool from a HUGE base of knowledge and find a good solution. It'd be a small step toward Open Sourcery. On the bright side: SL is not holding me captive anymore, so I can actually sleep. |

Oh! I thought the monkeys (or are they gorillas?) at the welcome page were just a joke, not an actual snapshot of their repair methods.... *doh*

What I don't really understand is why they don't shut down the grid entirely. Why keep it running for what's probably only a few hundred at most (anything with many dots are just campers) and it has to hamper what they're doing as well, and if it doesn't, then why not simply let more people on?

12-29-2006 05:55
I go to sleep last night blissfully unaware that all of my plans for the day would be ruined. Upon starting my day, 4am again, I learn that the grid is down!!!! WTF...... replace the part and move on... I have a party to throw.

Perhaps each and every one of us should give LL's blog post a chance....give 1st Life a shot! ![]() I, on the other hand, am working on shirt on downtime, but hey, that's just me. I'm afterwards going to get a cup of coffee and go on a walk with my little doggy...maybe you should do the same! ![]() |

Well I havent seen my friends for days due to RL commitments and I now for the first time this week we have 3 hour window when we could all be online. So im not happy to go walk the damn dog. Im begining to wander if I dont have too much emotional investment in SL to hell with the money aspect.

Yes, that's First Life, alright
Just pray to God (or whoever you might pray to) that *THAT* particular "asset server" doesn't go kablooey! *sits in front of the screen, slack-jawed and hoping her stare changes "offline" to "online"* |

I am totally with you here. The emotional investment is much greater than any financial investment for me... I can wholeheartedly agree. There's more to Second Life than prims -- there's actual humans, with real feelings out there. At the same time, I understand that hardware is not perfect: sometimes it fails. I just hope it isn't going to be a long wait, and that most everything will be there when we get back. Mari _____________________

emotional involvement
12-29-2006 07:17
On a daily basis I chat with numerous newbies who want to know what SL is all about. I get tired of explaining to these people that SL can be a fun and totally rewarding game, but you always have to remember that there are people on the other side of the screen. I warn them Do not play with peoples emotions.... very few people take this warning to heart. It is sad really when you have to deal with the consequences before the people learn.
My emotional involvement is very high, personally I am sitting here playing email tag with two of my best friends on sl just because the grid is down..lol... If it never comes back.. *cry*... I don't know what I would do! |

I think the biggest peeve is not that system issues occur. We all know that can happen. i think it is due more to the fact that it only seems to occur within 36 hours of anytype of update, maintenance etc. I think it is more frustrating when the grid is taken down to fix some issue, then the grid comes back and sometimes, and I mean sometimes that issue is fixed, but all of a sudden 5 new issues pop up. It becomes disheartening as we the residents sit there and say "oh wow, they fixed something. great." then we go play for a little bit, meet our friends, start doing what we do and blamo, oh btw the grid is now gonna be down for x amount of hours, but we will pop it open for 5 milliseconds so that the discount option on the TOS will not apply, then we shall take it right back down for several more hours.
I think several others have stated this in the past. Take the grid down as a planned outage, say 24 hours or something, have all the fixes ready and apply them, test them, and then when things look good, bring it back online. Dont throw the grid off for a few minutes. implement a poorly tested fix, bring the grid back up and hit us with oops, that fixed that problem but now there are 5 more. have a nice day. lol. that just does not cut it in the real world. Just my 2 cents |

a poorly tested fix Actually, a poorly tested fix would be an improvement. It implies that they actually *did* test it. |
