Did I just lost thousands of $L?

Hi - I just tried to rez a HUD thing and got a message "Attempt to rez an object failed." I don't see it in my inventory - it has thousands of $L worth of stuff in it... is it gone?

Is there anything I can do that will help? I have a pending help request, but no one's answered yet...

I'll say it if no one else will - the answer is probably yes. You could try clearing your cache and relogging. But since it's Sunday, probably a glitch ate your HUD. If it doesn't come back, try seeing if the manufacturer will send you a replacement. Most merchants are very understanding about the weekend bugs. I lost stuff inside one of my HUDS yesterday - not the HUD itself, just the new stuff I put in it - and got a replacement from the maker far faster than the support request will take.

Sorry to bear bad news.

Edit: Check your lost and found folder too just in case it ends up there.

typically when you get failure to rez an object failed it goes back to the folder you tried to rez it from.

If its not there, it should show up after a lil time (few hours)

In two years in SL - Ive never actually lost any item permently.

Maybe im extremely lucky , but I prefer to think that SL isnt as bad as people say.

That's the funny thing - I always thought people were nuts talking about losing stuff all the time. I never lost anything with my main account. My new alt, though? Poof goes my stuff when SL hiccups.

I guess some people are luckier than others!

The HUD itself is copyable, and I do have a copy of it, but the animations, etc, inside of it are/were no-copy and I paid an awful lot of money for them. A Linden responded to my help request and basically said to wait to see if it would get returned and then file a bug report for missing items. Having friends who lost thousands of items from their inventory never to see them returned despite begging the Lindens, I'm guessing my HUD and all of the animations, etc are gone as well. :(

Part of the sad thing is that I don't have a list of exactly what I lost.

So, is the lesson here just to never rez anything on a Sunday? Or just keep sinking money into SL? :)

Colette - should I stay logged in for a few hours then? Or might it come back while I'm offline?

I logged out i could not even get a notecard to show its text it says "Your request has timed out" blah blah blah after having about 5 timed out somethings in a row I came to the conclusion that doing anything in SL right now would be a very bad idea

Now I am going to go do chores and come back later and do what I had originally intended lol

its possible that its there and just an error on rezzing its also possible you lost the stuff. YOu will have to wait till the traffic dies down and asset servers recover to find out for sure.

Not sure that it matters but if you were to log off and reinstall the client it would have to load all your inventory again.

That dreaded slow process we all hate is your inventory talking to the aset server I beleive.

Wow, that is lucky indeed. I have things I lost two or three months ago that have not re-appeared.

Can I, like, rub your head for luck or something? Just kidding :)

I'm sorry if you lost your stuff. I feel bad for people when this happens. Generally, I will not rez anything expensive or no copy if there are more than 25,000 people online. I stay away from laggy places when editing my appearance, building, or rezzing no copy items. I try not to buy too much stuff that is no copy; I have no problem with no mod or no transfer items. I go up in the sky on a platform I make in a sim with few people in it for these types of activities. You can try contacting the sim owner and ask them to do an auto return for you if they find your item somewhere.

P.S. Sundays are notoriously problematic lately. -eek-

This weekend has been functionally the worst two days in the history of SL, I think. I lost an item due to a rez failure myself. It was the first time I'd ever seen that happen. Thankfully it was nothing that will be all that hard to replace.

Tad, sorry to hear you lost such an expensive collection of animations. That really blows. I'd definitely file a bug report. Maybe LL can find a way to help you. Another option might be to contact the creator, and tell your story. I can't speak for anyone else, but if this had happened to one of my customers, I'd give them a replacement.

I plan on following Gaybot's advice on this from now on. Over 20,000 or so people online equals don't touch inventory.

So it wasn't just me, then, who had trouble with inventory yesterday. When there were more than 30 000 people logged on, neither I nor any sim I tried could rez more than minimally -- just a grey wasteland of ghostly shapes and invisible avs. Creepy. And some items disappeared (seemingly permanently) from my inventory when I logged off and on again in an effort to improve the incredible lagginess.

I hope that LL has some sort of fix brewing for these increasingly large numbers of visitors. I shudder to think what 40 000 logged-in users would be like.

Update: I never received my lost HUD. Aside from losing the HUD, I didn't have any other problems this last weekend. I noticed a bit of lag in places, but no where near as bad as things used to be a few months ago when the most people we had online as 12,000.

Here's my new strategy: I'm just not going to buy any more animations, sounds, or anything else that might go into a HUD which are flagged as no-copy. I will beg and beg animators to please sell me copyable animations. That way, I can keep a copy and not worry too much.

I'm willing to pay a premium for such animations, but I'm not really sure why animators make no-copy animations in the first place...

I'm just going to chalk up my experience to learning and move on.

This actually happened to me about three weeks ago. I gave the HUD up for gone and went out and bought a complete set of new animations for it. (I figured that I was tired of the old ones anyway, so it wasn't a big deal.) Of course, the way my life works, about a week later, the OLD HUD, complete with all my old animations showed up in my inventory. (I ended up combining the two sets of animations and now have more ways to walk than a person should rightly be allowed.)

ON THE OTHER HAND, I had this same problem happen with a rather expensive item about a month ago. I tried to rezz it in world and poof, it was gone. It still hasn't come back, and I don't expect it will.

So, the upshot here is that my experience tells me you've got a 50/50 shot at it reappearing, but I suspect the odds are actually much lower than that. Still, if your A/O was a HUD type and not a wearable type, I'd think you'd have a chance at it reappearing. If not, kiss it goodbye.

Tad - I had this happen with a modeling studio I bought. I actually found it....on the corner of my island under the sea at 0,0,0. Someone said it might be there...and indeed it was. Others I know have not been as lucky. But it's worth a look!

You find all sorts of stuff at 0,0,0. Turn off the surface patch - Client/Rendering/Types/Surface Patch - so you can see under the ground.

Ooh sweet - but what if whoever owns the land at 0,0,0 has it blocked off? heh

Yep, nearly every region has a junkyard at the southwest corner <0,0,0>.

I wonder which would be worse, LL adding code to autoreturn items at <0,0,0> or relying on the landowners at every SW corner to do it?

0,0,0 is at the southwest corner? I better go in and take care of whatever's buried in my yard!

Edit: Whew! Nothing but dead bodies there. What a relief! Um, er, if you lose something in my sim and accidentally dig up the dead bodies, please keep it quiet. Please?

FWIW, I couldn't quite get to 0,0,0 in my home sim. I could get to 0,0,20 - the rest is buried under sand. I turned off the surfacepatch, but still couldn't see anything.

In wireframe, I could see a straightline in mouse look, but I couldn't ever select it...

Meh - oh well.

Thanks for all the suggestions though!

OMG this also happened to me on Sunday. I rezzed a no-copy street lamp i found somewhere, and rezzed it on a flat prim surface. We probably all know that some flat prim surfaces do not allow you to rez on them. Anyway the street lamp totally disappeared from existence. It wasn't in lost and found, wasn't in it's original folder, wasn't at 0,0,0 in the sim, wasn't stuck in my head, exc... Gone. Luckily i had several copies.

Now about the <0,0,0> problem. I have yet to try my solution but i believe if you cut a 16m parcel at the tip of the sim corner and give it a 1 minute auto return it might help with lost items. it is the oddest thing. Sometimes when you go to that area of a sim you can some complete houses down there. I noticed that if you try to return them, their just mirrored from other places in the sim and the real items get returned. For instance one time i saw a vendor down there. I returned it, a hour later i went to the mall and noticed the same vendor in there was gone.

My parcel includes the 0,0,0 corner. I can't return any of it though, I guess because at 0,0,0, the root of the object is technically not on my parcel.

I went to my home region to have a look at the corner. It's empty which isn't surprising as its Linden maintenance land with autoreturn set.

But looking at the Client/Rendering menu---- What the hell is Cheesy Beacon? Anybody know?

I've seen this before but let it go. Now my idle curiosity is peaked.... I mean piqued.

Good luck. This exact situation happened to me a few hours after the early December patch. The things I lost then remain lost, despite all attempts at recovery and repeated requests for help from Linden Labs. I simply do not matter to them. Neither do you. We are just insignificant blips in their metaverse pretensions, and little by little they have removed all public methods of communicating our experiences. Private communication, of course, is very easily managed and disregarded.

Basically one should not put any faith in either the program or the people who operate it. The former fails regularly and the latter refuse to take responsibility for it. Nothing you buy in SL, ever, is guaranteed. We could all wake up tomorrow with empty inventories and default skins and LL could and probably would refuse to help in any way. Because one cannot put faith in SL or LL, all the giddy talk about SL being the evolution of the internet are nonsense. SL as a platform will limp along for years, I'm sure, but eventually it will fade when someone else comes along and does it right.

That's my experience, and the experience of everyone I know personally in SL, although I'm sure there must be a few lucky people who have never had an inventory loss.

Cheesy Beacon adds visual effects to the map beacon, the thing that shows inworld where the map destination is set to.
