I'd asked about whether there was going to be a replacement of some sort for the RA forum about 4 times on the Forum migration blog without getting an answer. Kudos to Wallace for responding reasonably directly right away when I addressed the question of him. (He seems to be making a real effort to answer other questions, as well.) From: Wallace Linden I am pretty sure there will be some kind of "general" discussion area, whether it's called that or called something else. Our only concern with those is that they so often devolve into flame wars, either of us, or of Residents flaming each other. I do appreciate that sometimes people ask questions and get responses that are not satisfactory, but if the response then is to escalate things into abuse, it makes that kind of venue less attractive. We certainly recognize the value of free brainstorming, and we're looking at how a revised forum structure can best support that, and help avoid nastiness. Here is Meade's very sensible reply: From: Meade Paravane From: Wallace Linden I am pretty sure there will be some kind of "general" discussion area, whether it's called that or called something else. Our only concern with those is that they so often devolve into flame wars Yes. Thus the repeated call by residents for the ability to put people on a mute/ignore list. From: Wallace Linden This functionality exists in the old forums and is very useful in preventing flame wars. and we're looking at how a revised forum structure can best support that, and help avoid nastiness. As was asked before, why not just copy the existing forums structure. Lindens have made it clear, over and over and over, that they're not interested in participating in the forums so why don't you just do what the actual users are used to? Here is my response: From: Scylla Rhiadra Thank you! This is indeed encouraging.
I agree that flame wars and general nastiness are to be avoided if at all possible; they certainly are not conducive to real discussion. But to some extent such things are a function of all online blog / forum culture: it's going to happen, whatever safeguards are put into place. I think that you need only look at the skirmishes that erupt now on SL Answers, not to mention some of the posts here and in other SL Feature blogs, for proof of that. Nor do I think that the old forums were any more prone to that kind of thing than anywhere else I've visited; in fact, compared to the third-party forums, the RA forum is a perpetual love-in!
I hope that whatever "structural" features you put in place to prevent general nastiness do not end up restricting the free flow of ideas too dramatically. And here is Kara's response: From: Kara Spengler Good to hear you think there will be a general discussion area, but I do not quite think there will be the level of flames you expect.
Are there flames in pretty much any discussion about anything? Sure, whether it is a blog, a forum, or figuring out whose turn it is to do the dishes.
There seem to be two basic types of flames:
Resident v resident flames: miniscule compared to the amount of words posted on the forum.
Resident v LL flames: usually they grow larger by LL not being a participant in the discussion.
Do I expect a company to watch every post in every thread on their official communications channel(s)? No (although some do and people praise the customer service in return). I do expect them to pop in at times: if there are 100 people motivated enough to ask the same question dozens of times each and the company shows no response (or restates the party line over and over again) no matter how long the thread gets of COURSE the people on the thread will flame the company. And lastly Ciaran's . . . From: Ciaran Laval I'll believe it when I see it about a general discussion area, nearly everything in the original blog posts and the initial comments from Lindens suggested there was no room for general discussion, not least the way the question has been skirted by every Linden responding here.
The forums are being migrated on Tuesday and you don't know the structure? Seriously? This is tentatively good news . . . maybe?

If nothing else, they cannot pretend not to know- well, at least until they just delete the thread.

Wallace isn't really on the decision making panel on this, Blue and Lexie are. Lexie seems to think resident answers and SL Answers is a perfect fit and on Blue's initial blog post he said:
"More Focus: As part of the transition, we're removing some redundant forums and streamlining others, so you can more easily find the information you're looking for. We want the forums to be about conversations with a purpose; to that end, we're paring down to some of the most focused forums, and letting other conversations continue off-site, or even better: inworld. The forums have become jammed with cruft over the years, and we'll be paring down to a smaller number of top-level forums to make it easier to find the conversations you're looking for."
They really don't want a general discussion area. Whether they'll retreat and at least start attmepting to meet residents halway over these migrations remains to be seen but Scylla you have asked several times for a straight answer and nobody is prepared to give you one.

I would wager that you're going to be disappointed. Sorry. I should hand my pom-poms over to you. I'll go get them out of the dumpster. I didn't realize there would be someone left to hand them to.

I take the reluctance to provide a clear answer as a generally worrisome sign, but I am assuming that Wallace couldn't have said what he did say -- as fuzzy as it was -- without the concurrence of those overseeing the migration. In any case, I'm keep my fingers crossed. Of course, the next question is, if we DO get a general discussion area, will it be functional?

I'm sure it will be every bit as functional as the rest of the SLA. Is evasiveness a job requirement for working at Linden Lab? It's like they all live in Dilbert's world. From what I gather on these forums, the only reason Resident Answers is really a general discussion area is because it evolved into one. The absence of Linden interference probably helped that evolution. They deleted the true general discussion forum here years ago.

RA RA RESIDENT ANSWERS! 1 user laughed Although sadly I agree with what Ciaran said: "They really don't want a general discussion area." But I would add to that, they don't want a general discussion area where LL is criticized, which they see as bashing. If they do allow a general discussion area in the new "forums", I expect it to be as fun as when Katt moderated this forum :/

Scylla, you have to understand Lindenspeak.
When they say: "There will be some sort of..." They mean: "...in about six years, or when we get around to it"
When they say: "That's a great idea!" They mean: "We never thought of that, and will forget that YOU did, too."
When they say: "I'm pretty sure that..." They mean: "Absolutely not!"
When they say: "Improvements" They mean: "If we keep saying things are getting better, you'll never notice they are getting worse"
When they say: "In response to your requests" They mean: "Well, not YOUR requests, but some blogger who's never used SL thinks this would be a great idea"
When they say: "This will affect a minimum number of Residents" They mean: "All of them"

Now, don't get upset when they start calling you an elitist, scumbag, Nazi pig....it's just part of the welcoming jargon that has not been properly tweaked yet. Help them with that. Some days it will be lonely.

The absence of Linden interference probably helped that evolution. They deleted the true general discussion forum here years ago. Yup that's my impression too but it evolved into a general discussion as well as help area because that's what people want. They couldn't moderate it enough to keep it on track, at the moment they nip lengthy discussion in the bud to keep it on track, so it stifles the natural evolution.

here's what I just posted ... From: someone Hi Wallace, I'm really pleased that a general discussion area is at least being seriously considered. An ignore/mute button and some light moderation should prevent most flamewars. It doesn't need to cost - we had some great resmods at the old forums, who even now respond to reported posts and lock threads when needed, even though they are completely unsupported by the Lindens. People will do it for love if you give them a space they feel is truly theirs. You really, really need a "report bad post" button here though. If you go ahead and give us a RA-like space, please allow time for all the strong personalities from both venues to settle down and get used to each other - things may be a little heated to start with as a new "pecking order" is established.I am concerned that you'll give us this space and at the first sign of willy-waving you'll declare it a failure and close it. Mod it heavily to start with, if necessary, but please give it time to settle down and mature. As far as people dissing LL goes, well, that's going to happen, to a greater or lesser extent anyway - even if you all bent over backwards to keep us happy (ha!). You're the ones with all the power and it's as natural as people grumbling about their bosses or kids moaning about their parents and teachers. The logical solution is to keep it safely behind a login and not try to use a community resource as a form of advertising for hypothetical customers ... hey, here's an idea ... what about using "advertising" to advertise instead? I know it's a radical suggestion but I hear it works for quite a few companies On the other hand, I can quite see that without Google it's next to impossible to find anything on these blogs, so perhaps that's your reasoning. Speaking of Google, one thing that really concerns me is the public indexing of the old forums. There's a wealth of valuable info there which of course should be made available, but I don't see why it all has to be publicly accessible to non-residents. Many of us have bared our souls over there during the last few years, knowing that anybody reading would at least have a Second Life frame of reference for what we were saying. Suddenly all of this is to become accessible to anybody via any public search engine. Many of us feel betrayed. You could leave the old forums exactly as they are, with a login - just disable the ability for anybody to make new posts - easy peasy

The fun part of any kind of "policy decision" with LL is that only rarely do they actually point out where any given decision originated from.
Instead they usually just send out a few Lindens who probably don't have anything to do with the decision, and don't know anything about it except what's listed on their "things to say" cheatsheet.
Those Lindens will then nod and "yes, good idea!" and in the end LL gets to do whatever it wants in the first place because it later turns out that Spokesperson Linden wasn't actually qualified to make any sort of commitments or decisions on the matter.

They're being even more cagey than usual about this. The door seems to be open at least a crack, but it's anyone's guess what's really going on. Maybe (*maybe*) Blue and/or Wallace are trying to get something like a general discussion area pushed into the extant VP-approved list. Or maybe they're just trying to sedate us until it's time to slam the cage shut. Of course, neither way could they tell us anything.

From: Ciaran Laval They really don't want a general discussion area. No, they don't. It is quite possible that they feel that they are being forced to consider it by Des's statements alone. Caledon isn't a grid-breaking number of sims, but it is an incredibly valuable social framework and PR engine. It is the source of all things RFL, and it has the most visible successful new resident gateway, Oxbridge. I'm sure that if SL's new mainland themed areas were vital hotbeds of self-organizing resident communities, LL wouldn't think twice about making Des happy. But outside of Bay City, I don't see that happening. LL has said several times that new residents need to hook up quicker to vital communities if retention is to improve. The thing that LL fails to get is this: Vital communities do not form around real estate. They form around passionate people. (Cf. Sue Stonebender's store and Giving Tree community). Discourage passionate people - like all the contributors here on the forums, like Sue, like Ordinal ... and they will not form communities. And if LL thinks tying SL closer to RL will help with community formation, here's my 2cents: It will help greatly with enterprises and other RL-based communities. It will not help at all with "entertainment", which is mostly about escape. New residents brought in through social network sites are RL-oriented, and will drift away as soon as the next kewl 2D networking dingie appears for their smartphones. *shrugs* .

From: spinster Voom BTW, what does "jammed with cruft" even mean? Spinster...one definition of "cruft" included an example of it being similar to dustbunnies under the bed. If attacked with a broom, the problem becomes worse. Thanks for adding the part about not wanting the forum open for public search. That is very important. There are a lot of people that are not here, right now, that left bits and pieces of themselves there, and have no idea that they need to remove it in the next few days, and never will know that. I'm leaving everything - but I'm not happy about it at all.

SLU have got the cakes, pies and cookies out for you. http://www.sluniverse.com/php/vb/general-sl-discussion/40168-now-second-life-forum-closing-2.html#post862465 At least you can comfort eat if things don't happen as you hope. You have to ask yourself why they would consider putting in a general forum when they removed this one ages ago and haven't put one in on the new blog. Also ask yourself why they'd need to put in a RA when they've got SLA and also ask yourself just how many regular posters there are here and why out of the however many people come through the website as is, they'd want to make probably 50 regular posters from the RA happy. Wallace is new remember and is in charge of nothing more than massaging communications. I can only suggest you go to Blues office hour today (tomorrow??) and ask him straight out. It's much better than getting your hopes up. I know I sound like a wet blanket but the xsl experience is still fresh.. we got the commerce forums as a sop and anyone who used the old xsl forums knows just how unsatisfactory that is. eta: and if you want I'll come with you to Blue's OH and ask on your behalf. I haven't snarled at a Linden all year so far as I'm too busy ignoring them, so it's probably time to relive old memories.

From: Qie Niangao To be fair, there are some cobwebs in the darker corners of the subforums. See, e.g., . Ah, so "cruft" has nothing to do with dog shows then Still ... a discussion of Chomsky's universal grammar in a Black Thong Mistresses' forum? ... this is SL gold! This is the sort of stuff the new place needs ... actually, I found that thread very helpful as I learnt there was a Steven Pinker book I haven't read. You see - one person's Crufts is another person's beauty pageant I didn't read any of the other threads there - are they all like that?
