What would happen if I went through and deleted all of my calling cards?

Nothing. I delete mine regularly, especially since I read this article:

http://www.massively.com/2008/04/30/under-the-grid-calling-cards/

Quote of some of it:

From: Massively.com
As people log into and out of Second Life, the presence system automatically sends out notifications to people who are their friends, and to people who have their calling card. That's where we run into problems.

You see, every time one of the people whose calling card you have logs in or out, the system sends you a notification. It may not be a popup (they might not be a friend, or you might have those notifications suppressed) but there's still extra work going on.

The viewer has to then search through every item in your inventory, and check to see if it is (a) a calling card, and (b) if it is the calling card of the person that it has received a login/logout notification for. If it is, it updates the status of that card. You might have more than one card for a given person, and they could be in pretty much any of your inventory folders, so a complete search is needed.

The larger your inventory is, the more work each update takes. The more calling cards you have, the more updates you get.

Ever have those situations where your viewer seems to freeze for half a second? A second? Possibly several seconds? And they happen just here and there? That's probably your viewer grubbing its way through your overly large inventory trying to update your calling cards.
(More info at the link above; that's just a section of the article).

Nothing bad's ever happened to me because I've deleted them *g* I still get online/offline notifications of those on my friends list.

to test this, I have just deleted one calling card from someone on my friends list who I can't remember.

They still show on friends list, calling up their profile from friends list still works and it doesn't add another copy of the calling card to my inventory.

I just deleted 292 calling cards. We'll see if I run better :)

Then why on earth does friending someone automatically put their calling card in your inventory?

My calling cards are only a small part of my inventory, compared to textures for instance. But times that by everybody, and we could get rid of a massive load on the asset servers just like that!

Incidentally, does anyone ever just offer a calling card instead of friendship? It's happened to me once, but the person then friended me two days later. Do we need them at all?

I never really found the Calling Card to be very useful. In the beginning I would sometimes exchange cards with someone if they wanted Friendship but I felt that I did not know them that well. My thinking was that I would thereby remember their name easier and be able to IM them or get to their profile easier.

Meh - I never use them for anything and I have deleted ones for people not on my Friends list. I did not know that Friends would not get removed from the Friends list if I deleted their Card, so thanks for that info.

I don't mind them. I wish people would take them instead of friending. I don't need to see when all these people who I only casually know or know for business purposes come online and offline.

You can turn that off in preferences, but it would be good to be able to do that on a per friend basis, so you know when your "friend friends" come on line, but needn't be bothered about business acquaintances.

I would personally rather see a 2nd list. Once for friends, with everything that's there now, and one for aquaintences / business contacts / stalkers, whatever. A simple online/offline notification affair, and maybe not even that. Just to make it easy to pull up a profile and an IM when I need to.

Oh, and the ability to move a contact from one list to another.

What Cristalle said.

My friends list is very small and only contains those people whose presence I may want to know about.

The trick is how to tactfully decline friendship offers from people whose comings and goings just add to the distractions on your screen. I've asked people for their cards, instead, which seems nicer than to just refuse their offer outright.

yes, I deleted all mine after seeing that Massively article as well. It does no harm to remove them at all. :)

You only get notifications for people who are on your friends list, not for people you just have the calling card of so whether you keep them or delete them makes no difference.

(It does make a difference on the client's side of things but even then it's going to be negliable and the only real benefit is likely that if you scroll the inventory past the current selection it won't suddenly snap back when someone on your friends list you have the calling card of logs on/off)

Quick Fact: Did you know that this feature already exists? If you create a folder of calling cards in your inventory and then right-click on it, you can start a conference IM with all the people who’s cards are in the folder!

You can also ctrl-click to select multiple people on your friends list then do the IM/call button.

Using calling cards, you can add people to an existing conference by dragging them in :P

It seems true, from what I can see, that you don't get online notifications for people who aren't on your friends list. But all I've done to find out so far is look at a calling card for someone who's online, but isn't on my friends list... the calling card doesn't say online.

The calling card of someone who is online is usually bolded, although I'm not sure if that happens only if the person is also on your friends list or not. Judging from that Massively article, it happens whether you have them friended or not, as that's what the viewer is continually updating.

The last sentence only - pulling up the profile and IMing from the card. You don't get any kind of online/offline indication unless they are on your friends list.

Well, yeah, but I've never wanted a conference IM with anybody except folks on my friends list and you can do that by selecting multiple people in that list and clicking IM.

The one use that I have found for them and have kept a few specifically for that reason -- the properties of that card will tell you when you got that card, therefore maybe when you met them or befriended them.
