I just saw a cool sculpting program called Mudbox, which lets you model in a very natural intuitive way. Is there any chance that one could use such a program for making a Sculpty? I read someone say they'd created a sphere in Wings3D, then exported it as an obj file, worked on it then in another modelling program, then brought it back into Wings3D and used it's export function to produce the sculpty geometry bitmap. Might it be possible to do something similar with a program like Mudbox? Mudbox is at http://www.mudbox3d.com. The demo videos are worth looking at.

It supports baking between arbitrary meshes, so it's quite possible that this could be used for sculpties. Looks like it's primary function is very similar to Zbrush - bring in a mesh, detail it with the sculpting tools, then render out a normal or displacement map so the original mesh can be rendered to look like the detailed mesh in another application. I didn't see any mesh export ability so unless someone figures out a way to convert the normal map to a sculpt map it might be a dead end. Looks like a very cool modeler for doing detail work where a normal map or displacement map is all you need to get out of it, but there's not enough info there to be able to tell if it's a viable tool for making sculpties or not.

It looks interesting, but I would consider Zbrush instead. I am pretty sure Zbrush has been around longer, it is cheaper and supported by a wide range of professional users. Makes me regret I sold my Wacom tablet ... those videos look so much fun. But then again, I've gone back to pencil and paper.. back to nature, man! *gets undressed and grins wildly, snorts like a wild hog and runs off into the woods outside the house* If you click those videos demonstrating Mudbox, so that you go to Youtube's website, check out some of those other videos there! Not only for Mudbox, but some other interesting tools as well. I had a blast with T.E.D.D.Y.! (the website has a Java applet which lets you draw in 3D with it): Project T.E.D.D.Y.

Looks Greek to me!

Back in college I met the guy who wrote that. In fact, I worked on a project with him (he was a grad student then.) We worked together in a class called (I am not making this up) "Building Virtual Worlds."

That sounds really cool, Johan, must have been a pretty big project I imagine Chip, do you have any first hand experience with Zbrush, by the way?

Yes, I noticed the price is not that bad for Zbrush 3.0. I have other applications that I paid much more for and never even use.. lol (yes I am ashamed thinking of that).

Also I see a program called Curvy 3D at http://www.curvy3d.com and one called CB Pro at http://www.cbmodelpro.com . Might either of these be used in sculpty making?

I'm stuck with 3D Studio Max 9.... I can only wait for them to do something workable with it.

From: Psyra Extraordinaire I'm stuck with 3D Studio Max 9.... I can only wait for them to do something workable with it. Don't despair, Psyra. Max 9 has not one, but two very workable methods for making sculpties, one of which is so far available only with Max which allows turning an arbitrary mesh into a sculptie and not being limited to just reshaping a sphere or cyllinder. Examples of sculpties made with max 9 can be seen here. You can use the Projection modifier on a sphere as detailed in this thread. Or you can use the same method that people are using in Blender and Wings3D as detailed in this thread. Far from being stuck with Max 9, you actually have the tool with the most options currently!

SmoothTeddy can export Data in a strange Format, this might be another Option for easy Sculpties - if someone writes a Converter EDIT : i just noticed, it can export VRML V2.0, too... nice

I thought the free version of CB Model Pro was a time limited demo, but turns out it actually just requires registering in order to get a license key and remove the time limit, no money or credit card info involved.
It looks like it's fun and simple to play with, so you might want to try it out just for fun whether it has any usefulness for SL or not.

I quickly tried out both of these programs, Curvy is very fun and you can export the objects as well. I imported one into blender and baked a texture with it. However I could not import it into wings, just trying to crashed wings. CB Modeler is a fun little program too however just looks mostly like a very simple sculpter. Like a very very Tiny version of a Z brush effect. Mudbox looks awesome yet so does the price especially for the commercial version.

There's another one, Modo 203, that looks interesting, at http://www.luxology.comI'd like to see Linden Lab contact all these sculpting program makers regarding including native support for SL sculpted prims.

Modo is an excellent program, probably one of the best modellers on the market right now. Made by a former developer of Lightwave. Pricey, but worth it. A friend of mine swears by it. Probably overkill for SL, but if you're doing a lot of 3d modelling already it's worth it.

A similar tool to mudbox (and this one is free & open source). http://www.sharp3d.sourceforge.net

For what it's worth, Sharp3D says: From: someone Current Project Status
SharpConstruct is no longer being maintained as an independent project. I have implemented most of SharpConstruct's tools in Blender. Which doesn't mean it wouldn't be worth trying.

From: SuezanneC Baskerville For what it's worth, Sharp3D says:
Which doesn't mean it wouldn't be worth trying. Just a warning - The mesh layout for a sphere in Sharp Construct isn't really suitable for sculpties. But you can get around this by importing a sphere from another application. Another downer with Sharp Construct is that you can't create textures by painting directly onto the surface of a model. But other than the above problems, I think it's a really nice little modeler.
